Apple announce new 16GB 4" Retina-equipped iPod Touch!

Today Apple have launched a brand new iPod Touch: it's a new 16GB model which effectively replaces the 4th generation which had 16GB of storage on board, which has been discontinued. This 16GB model is key to Apple because the 5th generation iPod Touch only has 32 or 64GB storage options and the smallest storage option is cheapest so probably sells the most!

This new model features the new 4-inch Retina display, a nice and powerful dual-core A5 processor, and there's a front-facing FaceTime camera which is labelled as 'HD' but we're not sure if that's 720 or 1080p. All of this is crammed into the tiny 6.1mm-thick frame as the past generation.

Obviously there's no rear camera on this device and Apple have decided to ditch the lanyard hook like before. The new 16GB variant will set you back $229 if you want black or silver colours and apparently it'll be in the mail within 24 hours! If you're interested in one then you can get one here!

Apple and Samsung take all of the mobile industries profit: Everyone else sees negligible incomes or losses!

Samsung and Apple are the biggest rivals in so many ways. It's Android vs. iOS, patent wars, Samsung's manufacturing contracts for Apple, iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S4 and we're sure there's more we could have come up with. The one thing which they both manage to do is sell their mobile phones, by the bucket load!

Unfortunately, that's not a claim many other companies can have according to a recent report from Canaccord Genuity which was given to AppleInsider. The report shows how during the first three months of this year Apple managed to secure a whopping 57% of the mobile phone industry’s profit and the remaining 43% lined Samsung's pockets.

That means that everyone else made a loss or they earnt next to nothing. HTC and LG saw the slimmest of profits and Sony, Nokia and Motorola all saw their money go down the metaphorical pan. That's not really good news for us consumers because it means that from our point of view some companies might be looking to give up in the arena unless they can turn things around. The thing with the mobile phone industry is that things change very quickly, in recent years Nokia have gone from hero to zero! So things could all change again!

The European Commission tell Motorola to 'spend their time innovating!'

Everyone knows by now that Google bought Motorola last year and the main reason at the time which people put forward was that Motorola have a tonne of patents which Google could use to defend Android from the onslaught of lawsuits which companies were facing from Microsoft and Apple in particular. The thing is that Motorola have taken Apple to court in Germany and it seems as though the lawsuit which they filed hasn't gone down very well. Instead, the European Commission is thinking that Motorola are abusing their position by seeking an injunction against Apple over essential mobile phone standards.

In a 'statement of objections from the Commission Motorola were informed of their viewpoint and that basically they were happy to enforce injunctions against patent infringements, but not where a company was prepared to agree on licensing terms for those patents as Apple was happy to do here.

   The Commission's Jaoquin Almunia said:
"I think that companies should spend their time innovating and competing on the merits of the products they offer - not misusing their intellectual property rights to hold up competitors to the detriment of innovation and consumer choice."

We'll be sure to let you know where this case heads next and you can read the full statement here!

Big redesigns tipped in the Mail and Calender apps for iOS. Wider redesign will wait according to Bloomberg!

It was just yesterday that we brought you news that Apple were supposedly redesigning iOS to make things look a bit flatter. Well it seems that Bloomberg has chimed in now with their opinion on what will be changing in the next version of iOS and as well as the update to the interface the Mail and Calender apps are reported to be in line for overhauls.

According to Bloomberg's take on the matter the next version of iOS is at risk of being delayed because of the wide "software overhaul." As we've said there's meant to be a new flatter aesthetic, but the biggest change is set to take place in the Mail and Calender apps. In these two areas Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is "exploring more dramatic changes", which may mean that an update with the refreshes in will land later than the update for the rest of the system.

The man behind all of this is Apple's Jony, who is the company's new software chief having taken over from Scott Forstall. He is probably seeking to address the remarks from analysts like Benedict Evans, who Bloomberg quote as saying that, “There is a tidying up that needs to be done and a rethinking.” Part of this rethinking could be the way in which gestures are incorporated into the system, something which Jony Ive has supposedly been exploring lately because of Ive's interest in "altering how people control their computers."

We'll leave you with Bloomberg's comments that the changes are unlikely to be drastic in iOS 7, we would think that Ive's influence will only be felt this time next year after he really gets to grips with his new role! What do you think? Does iOS need a redesign or just refinement? Let us know in the comments below!

Rumours suggest iOS 7 is set to get a redesign and as part of that will all be made flatter!

This is supposedly Apple's next iPhone design.
The rumour mill for the next version of Apple's iOS is starting up with the first real rumours coming from sources speaking with 9to5Mac!

According to the reports iOS 7 is set to be "very, very flat,” and the interface is shaping up to lose, "all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS." The multitude of 'sources' seemingly reiterate the 'flatness' of the new operating system with one apparently suggesting how iOS will be similar to the flatness of Microsoft's Metro UI used in Windows Phone and Windows 8!

The problem here for Apple is that their OS hasn't had a major overhaul since it was released way back with the original iPhone. That was six phones ago and assuming you've owned an iPhone for that long then the look will probably be getting a bit stale. Microsoft and Google have radically reinvented their interfaces lately with Windows Phone 7 ushering in the Metro design, while Honeycomb and subsequent versions have brought the Holo theme to Android.

The one thing we can be sure of, no matter what this update looks like, is that Apple will strive to make it as easy to use and as intuitive as possible! That was why they borrowed Android's notification centre and that's why aesthetically things may look different, but under the surface it'll probably all act exactly the same!

Foxconn have a harder time of it: Some say their too closely linked to Apple.

You have probably heard of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, although you'll probably know them as Foxconn instead. They're the guys responsible for a huge amount of your own and your family's tech. It seems that the guys at Foxconn have had a bit of a rough time of it lately and apparently their fortunes are very closely tied to those of Apple.

Foxconn are thought to have somewhere between 60 and 70 percent of their revenue from building Apple's iPhones and iPads, but the guys from Taiwan have seen a 19 percent decline in sales in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year, something which Reuters explains by a 'disappointing demand for the iPhone'.

An analyst from KGI Securities said that, "A quarterly decline was expected, but not a yearly decline... This shows that Hon Hai's revenue depends too much on Apple, and iPhone orders corrected more than expected." The same analyst said that Foxconn's profit is likely to be at risk in the first half of the year as things are expected to stay relatively flat through the next quarter too.

What do you think? Is Apple going to be able to sell enough iPhones to keep Foxconn in the green or do you think they're sales are going to plateau from here on out?

EU looking into possible anticompetitive case against Apple's iPhone dealings?

The European Union regulators are currently considering contracts which Apple has with European mobile networks about possible antitrust violations after a set of these networks suggested to the commission that these contracts throttle competition.

An 'unidentified' source speaking to the New York Times outlined how certain French carriers had issues with Apple’s contracts, but there might be wider implications here too. When asked from comment the European Commission there was a confirmation that there is an examination of Apple's deals, but at the moment there's no formal investigation and there's no reason for a formal investigation to start until there's a formal anticompetitive complaint lodged. Antoine Colombani, a spokesman for Joaquín Almunia, added:
“We have been contacted by industry participants and we are monitoring the situation, but no antitrust case has been opened.”
Naturally Apple issued a statement too, which read:
“Our contracts fully comply with local laws wherever we do business, including the E.U.”
The New York Times seemingly did some investigation and they said that, "it appears that Apple’s contracts with some smaller European carriers were stricter than those with larger companies." Obviously this would make it hard for some people, but apparently these problems are worse in Europe than in the United States where one exec said that the "terms of its contract with Apple were aggressive but not unreasonable."

One thing to point out here is that at no point does Apple force carriers to offer its devices. This is always a free choice and carriers choose to stick with the devices, but to say that might miss the point here somewhat.

So what do Apple's contracts typically involve which networks could be unhappy with? Well according to the New York Times every contract is different, but typically Apple sets a quote for the amount of iPhones which carriers need to sell over a set period of time. If these quotas are missed then networks are asked to pay for unsold devices and if networks refuse the quotas then the device is simply not offered to them at all.

Apple’s contract differs with every carrier that sells the iPhone. Such sales accounted for 56 percent of Apple’s $55 billion in revenue last quarter. In most cases, Apple sets a quota for how many iPhones the carrier needs to sell over a set period of time, usually three years. If it does not agree to the quotas, it does not receive the iPhone. That makes this interesting because this in effect secures the iPhones dominant position and it's actually very clever of Apple to think of doing it that way.

At the moment noone's really sure whether this will go any further, but expect there to be a lot going on behind the scenes before we hear anything else publicly!

Apple dominates J D Power's smartphone satisfaction chart for the 9th time on the bounce!

J D Power & Associates have this little bi-annual report which shows how well smartphone manufacturers are doing when it comes to pleasing their customers and there's one company which has topped the charts for the last nine reports and there's no sign of that dominance changing any time soon!

That company is Apple, who apparently are extraordinarily good in the customer satisfaction department! Basically how J D Power do it is to take a 1,000 point scale and to award points for performance, design, features, and ease of use! Based on that criteria Apple is a whopping 60 points ahead of their closest rival who, this research suggests, is Nokia! Apple scored highly on design and ease of use, just as they have traditionally. If you check out the graph below, you'll see that Apple is the only manufacturer to score above 800 points and they were the only guys to get the score of 5 out of 5 on the 'Power Circle Ratings'.

Again as you can see there's five points which separate Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and HTC in the points tally and then LG and Blackberry are left bringing up the rear! We're not sure if we necessarily agree with that, it seems slightly harsh on LG, but if it's what the guys found then there must be something in it? It's interesting that Sony weren't included in the scoring and we're not quite sure why them and the Chinese manufacturers weren't.

This is only consideration of the smartphone aspect of the scores, there's also a feature phone chart which can be found at the source link below!

Gassée criticises Schiller for pre-Samsung comments, as well as offering some more opinions on the company!

You might not have heard of the ex-Apple Exec Jean-Louis Gassée, he worked at Apple from 1981 to 1990 and since then he's been in and around the tech world at various different places. Two days ago though he came forward and offered some constructive criticism of Apple and in particular Phil Schiller and how he handled the Samsung Galaxy S4 launch in particular.

Gassée.
Gassée commentary basically focuses on Phil Schiller's interview with Reuters, which we covered last week. The first thing which was called into contention was why Schiller speculated on which version of Android the Galaxy S4 would launch with. Schiller explained how he thought the Galaxy S4 would run a 'year old' version of Android, in fact Samsung announced the latest and greatest version of Android, 4.2.2, would be on board right from the off. Naturally this made Schiller look a little silly, but we can understand the point he was trying to make, because there is the whole 'Android updates take ages' idea which is true to some degree (read this and you'll see that Apple aren't quite as perfect as they appear to be!).

Some people perceived Schiller's words as 'Apple going on the defensive', but Gassée suggested that because Apple is the person at the top, just as Microsoft were when Apple were poking fun at them, they should not trash their rivals something which he believes is especially true when the 'digs are humorless and further weakened by error'.

Something which was compounded, in Gassée's mind, by the way in which Apple was:
"Attacking competitors, pointing to their weaknesses, and trumpeting one’s achievements is better done by hired media assassins. A company, directly or through a PR firm, engages oft-quoted consultants who provide the required third-party stats, barbs, and encomiums. This isn’t theorizing, I once was a director at a company, one of many, that used such an arrangement to good effect."
This is linked to Gassée's criticism of how Apple use far too much hyperbole in their announcements, something which he called 'language molestation'! The whole piece was wrapped up when Gassée said:
"In the two trading days bracketing the Samsung S4 launch Schiller clumsily attempted to trash, Apple shares respectively gained 1%, followed by a 2.58% jump the day after the intro. Schiller could have said nothing before the launch and, today, let others point to early criticism of the S4′s apparent featuritis."
That's an excellent point, very well made and we find it hard to disagree with what Gassée said. If you want to read the full commentary head over to MondayNote here!

Blackberry's Thorsten Heins says Apple 'were' successful whilst discussing Blackberry's future!

Blackberry's CEO Thorsten Heins, recently had an interview with the Australian Financial Review and he offered his opinions on everything from Apple right through to BB10 and the prospects of new Blackberry tablets.

When the topic of Apple came up Heins said that:
"Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market. They did a fantastic job with the user interface, they are a design icon... There is a reason why they were so successful, and we actually have to admit this and respect that."
What Heins said there is quite interesting because he repeated mentioned Apple in the past tense, so they 'were' successful, which means Heins thinks that Apple is no longer at the forefront of the smartphone battle. He went on to justify this claim with the statement that:
"History repeats itself again I guess. The rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don't innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly [he knows from experience]. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for this invention was all about is now five years old."
Five years in the smartphone market is a very long time! We only have to think back three years to the original Samsung Galaxy S to remember there was a single-core processor and now we're looking at a device with eight cores and a full HD display! If you want to go back four years then you might remember Nokia's iconic, but shockingly poor, N97, so with Apple's interface having stayed the same for five years, perhaps Heins has a point, but naturally you could ask what's the point in changing something that 'just works'?

Heins added that he now thinks BB10 devices are much better at multitasking than the iPhones and he acknowledge that iOS has a better array of apps, but he argued that with 100,000 native BB10 apps, users shouldn't be too disappointed when the Z10 launches in America this week!

When it came to tablets we basically heard what we have before. Heins reiterated that he:
"Wouldn’t want to do it the same way again, if I do something around tablets, I want it to be really substantial and meaningful, and quite frankly it would need to be profitable as well... I think the profit pool is very very thin. Kudos to Apple, I think they really managed to own that space, so it doesn’t make sense for me to just take this head on. I need to figure out, for my enterprise customers, for my consumers, for my BB10 audience, what can I do that provides them a mobile computing experience in the form factor of a tablet, which goes beyond just the puristic tablet experience."
At least this time Heins is being realistic without simply jumping in at the deep end and hoping Blackberry can swim!

He touched on the 'unhelpful' rumours of a Lenovo buy out as well as bits and bobs about the general direction in which Blackberry are heading and to be fair everything seems to be very calm and calculated with Thorsten at the helm!

Google set to unleash Google Now onto iOS devices?!

Android users have probably come to love and be slightly scared by Google Now since it arrived last year! The super-smart people at Google have somehow worked out a way to get your smartphone to learn where you live, the things you like and so you always have a list of things nearby and you know exactly how long it'll take to get to work or back home when road delays have been factored in!

The video embedded below was spotted by the guys over at Engadget and it seems to say that Google Now will be landing on iOS devices a lot sooner than we think! The YouTube video, which seemingly broke cover a bit too early and was subsequently pulled, has a demonstration of how to access the Now features via the iOS Google Search app!

There's been no official statement from Google on the matter, as we've come to expect, but surely it'd be good to have a compelling alternative to Siri for Apple users? We're not sure if that means the video is an elaborate hoax, but with the speed at which the video disappeared, we think it was definitely real! What do you think, is this something you would be interested in? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Analyst predicts Apple will miss revenue forecast as Intel are rumoured to help with A7 chip production!

Today Reuters has reported that Jefferies analyst, Peter Misek, has suggested that he thinks Apple has 'a 25 percent chance of missing its quarterly revenue forecast'! He believes that this week's launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will slow iPhone sales.

Misek even went as far as cutting his sales estimates down from 37.5 million to 35 million iPhones for the quarter which ends this month! Misek seems to have a generally negative outlook for Apple at the moment as he also chopped the company's target stock price down to $420 from $500. Misek added that:
"When handset makers fall out of favor they fall faster/further than expected."
This is nothing more than one analysts outlook, but Apple's stock was down 1.8 percent on the Nasdaq today!

Irrespective of analysts opinions Apple will be producing another iPhone and iPad and it's believed that the guys from Cupertino are currently working on deals to secure the production of their next generation of mobile processors, the A7's. According to a rumour from the infamous Digitimes, Apple will be splitting their chip production between Samsung, TSMC and Intel. Each fo whom will be charged with making 50, 40 and 10% of the next gen. processors respectively!

This is just a rumour for the moment, but we all know that Intel and Apple are cosy on the desktop and laptop front so it's not too much of a stretch to think that Intel would like a hand in Apple's mobile division too!
