Huawei's CEO breaks his silence: Explains that nothing untoward happens in his company!

Huawei have been having some trouble in the US lately. They've been accused by the government of surveillance for the Chinese authorities and there's been some issues of misquotes of execs on whether or not the company would be trying to target the American market any more. Well it turns out that Huawei's founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfai, is typically a quiet guy and he doesn't normally say much if anything to the media. Well that changed today as he took the time to speak to reporters in New Zealand as they've recently won contracts to build mobile network infrastructure in the region and he defended his companies position on the US cyber concerns about his company.

Zhengfai has said that despite his 26 years of silence, he hasn't avoided the press because of dodgy dealing by his company. Instead, Zhengfai said that there are no improper links to the Chinese government, he said:
"Huawei has no connection to the cyber-security issues the U.S. has encountered in the past, current and future... Huawei equipment is almost non-existent in networks currently running in the U.S. We have never sold any key equipment to major U.S. carriers, nor have we sold any equipment to any U.S. government agency."
The whole story is quite interesting and it's unlikely that there will ever be an honest answer as to whether there is any untoward behaviour going on behind the scenes on either side of the issue, but in the modern world the best policy is to all try to get along no matter how hard it is. We'll keep you up to date will all the latest news, but in the meantime we have Huawei's stunning P6 to look forward to seeing on the market running Android!

Huawei's stunning P6 pops up in black and with a stunning brush metal finish!

Wow, wow, wow! If the guys over at Engadget are right on this one then the image you see above is the Huawei Ascend P6! And it looks absolutely stunning in our opinion!

The device's full title is the P6-UO6 and it is pegged to come in at a mere 6.18mm in thickness. We've actually touched on this device before when it popped up in the Chinese governments approval filings, but we haven't seen it in the finished form before.

Aside from how it looks we don't actually know that much about the phone at all. There's meant to be a dual-SIM version and it'll have the normal connections which you'd expect, but that's about it.

According to the guys over at Engadget there's a Huawei launch event being arranged for London on the 18th of June, which Richard Yu, the company's chairman will be attending, so it's possible we will hear some more details there! Otherwise we can just marvel at how the phone look in black and in this brushed metal colour in the pictures below!

Huawei give up on the US market after numerous set backs! [UPDATE: Eric Xu was misquoted: Was actually talking about areas for telecoms growth]

You might have heard that lately that Huawei are getting a really tough time over in the US because of a lot of accusations which have so far been unsubstantiated, but the politics behind it is a huge debate that we're not really going to enter into. The one thing that you need to know though is that because the US scrutiny of Chinese network infrastructure providers has become so intense Huawei have announced that they are going to give up on the US market entirely.

In an interview with the Financial Times Huawei's Vice President, Eric Xu, confirmed that his company was "not interested in the US market anymore" despite their years of effort and money which have been invested in a bid to secure custom from US businesses!

Huawei is currently the world's second largest manufacturer of telecoms equipment, but they have recalibrated their projected growth and subsequently their sales figures now their US operations are over. That means that Huawei now expect revenue to hit to $10 billion by 2017 instead of the $15 billion they hoped for by the same year before they were effectively forced to concede the market.

We're not sure what this means for Huawei phones in the US, we would assume that they will be unaffected by the telecoms equipment division, but we're not in a position to confirm that. In the meantime let us know what you think about Huawei's new mid-range A199 smartphone, the details of which you can find here!
Via Engadget.

[UPDATE]

According to the Beijing News (web translated) Huawei's Eric Xu was misquoted by the internet yesterday and the company are not actually leaving the US market. Instead, Huawei said that Xu was discussing the new markets which they can tap into in future and they were clarifying that the company will have great difficulty growing in the US, but they did not explicitly rule out the possibility.

Again we expect Huawei phones will continue to ship to the US as this is one part of the business which Huawei can target at and grow in the US.

Huawei announce the G510: A solid mid-range device, headed to Vodafone UK!

Huawei have a good track record here in the UK, their mid-range devices always prove quite popular because they're reasonably priced and well spec-ed. This latest device, the Ascend G510, is no different and it'll cost £130 or £13 per month on contract and it will arrive on Vodafone on the 12th of this month! Keep that price in mind as we run through the specifics.

On the screen front there's a nice big 4.5-inch screen with a slightly disappointing 480 x 854p resolutions, making the screen FWVGA.  There's a decent 1.2 GHz dual-core processor to keep Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Huawei's Emotion UI ticking along nicely! The cameras are decent if not spectacular; there's a 5 mega-pixel rear and a VGA resolution front-facing set-up and video recording maxes out at 720p on the rear one.

Other than that there's a smallish 1700 mAh battery and a microSD slot which supports cards up to 32GB in size which should help support the 4GB of internal memory and 512MB of RAM.

At its price point it's a decent little phone if you're looking for something cheap on Vodafone, just don't expect to be receiving updates left, right and centre, if you ever get Android 4.2 then we'll be impressed!

Everything from the Huawei MWC event!

Today at MWC Huawei called themselves 'a brand in the making' and they're seeking to create 'an emotional bond [and to] earn the right [to resonate]" with consumers through this year's line of phones! The ultimate aim for this year is to secure a place in the top 100 global brands! So they're quite lofty goals

There's four ranges for this year: they'll be offering the P for fashion and design, G for best in class value, Y for accessibility and quality and D for bleeding edge tech, the last of which we've already heard about!

The Huawei Ascend P2.

Huawei's update to their P-series is finally with us and this time it's another solid device.

There's a 720p 4.7" IPS display which is one of the highlights of the device! It features some new things such as 'HD In-cell tech' which should make it easier to read outdoors, there's 85-degree viewing angles, 500nit brightness. Huawei were content to offer a 720p display because the ppi remains above 300, 315ppi to be precise, the full justification for that decision is available here. The display is also 'infinity edge' which to all intents and purposes means that it's an edge to edge display and with that much screen on show it's reassuring to know that the screen will be well protected with a coating of Gorilla Glass 2 and there's a final nice touch through a feature called 'Magic touch', this will basically let you use the P2 even if you're wearing gloves!

Outside of the screen there's a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 2240mAh battery (which has special charging options which should speed it up) all of which they crammed inside an 8.6mm thick profile. Huawei said that the device would've been thinner if they hadn't squeezed in the new camera.

So the extra size can be attributed to Huawei's new 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. The sensor is Back Side Illumminated (BSI) which should help in low light conditions and it has HDR capabilities in both photos and videos. Thankfully Huawei included a dedicated camera button so you can make full use of that nice sensor and on the front the camera is a 1.3-megapixel option.

The rest of the phone features your normal array of connections, including NFC, and the final treat that comes with this phone is that it is the, "first smartphone in the world that support LTE Cat4." That means that you can download data at theoretical speeds of 150Mbps!

On the software front Huawei have made some customisations to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The OS is skinned with a new version of the Emotion UI. Huawei mention that the software has hundreds of customisable themes as well as:
"[A] UniHome function combines home panels with the main menu, while Huawei's patent-pending Me Widget better utilizes screen real-estate by combining all the information and functions you need in a single, customizable widget. Emotion UI is also pre-installed with a smartphone housekeeper function to support real-time data traffic tracking, automatic blacklisting and blocking, periodical system cleaning, and spontaneous exiting of idle programs and cache clean-up, in addition to anti-virus, energy saving, privacy protection, software management, and more."
Huawei will also throw in their Cloud+ service to help back up and sync your files and Huawei Air Sharing which can share information between phone, "Pad" and TV, so it's almost like iCloud, indeed Huawei said they were very impressed by what Apple had worked on and achieved so that is undoubtedly where they got their inspiration!

If you're interested in this device you can pick it up in either black or white, it'll set you back 399 euros and European availability will begin in Q2! There's a little promo video embedded below for your enjoyment!

Collaboration with Orange:

A big part of Huawei's hope for this device rests on their new partnership with Orange in Europe; the P2 will be available on Orange France in June 2013and the ultimate aim of this collaboration is to help Huawei build an improved brand in Europe.

   Orange's Yves Maitre said that:
"We're pleased to be working with Huawei again to enable our customers to have easier and faster access to all their favorite content... We are impressed by the design and look forward to putting the Ascend P2 into the hands of consumers as soon as possible."

The full press release for the Ascend P2 is embedded below:

Huawei Reveals the World's Fastest 4G LTE Smartphone
HUAWEI Ascend P2 breaks all records with its 150 Mbps download speed
Barcelona, Spain, February 24, 2013: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today introduced the HUAWEI Ascend P2, the world's fastest smartphone, at the 2013 Mobile World Congress (MWC). The Ascend P2 features a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and LTE Cat 4 providing an ultrafast web experience with download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Continuing the fashion legacy of the Ascend P-series, it is only 8.4mm slim with an infinity edge 4.7-inch IPS HD in-cell touch display with second-generation Corning® Gorilla® Glass, and will be available in black and white.
"Ascend P2 is the perfect combination of elegance and power, and further proof that there's no need to compromise when desiring a perfect smartphone. It is evidence of the outstanding smartphone experiences and great technology that we are committed to bringing to consumers globally," said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.
The HUAWEI Ascend P2 will be on sale in France through Orange in June 2013.
"We're pleased to be working with Huawei again to enable our customers to have easier and faster access to all their favorite content," said Yves Maitre, Senior Vice President, Mobile Multimedia & Devices, Orange. "We are impressed by the design and look forward to putting the Ascend P2 into the hands of consumers as soon as possible."
"The technological capabilities of the HUAWEI Ascend P2 will enable our customers to have the fastest access to all their content, with speeds up to 150 Mbps on our brand new 4G network," said Florence Paour, Device Marketing Director, Orange France.
The HUAWEI Ascend P2 runs on the Android 4.1 operating system, with Huawei's own Emotion UI 1.5. Powered by a 2420 mAh battery and 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, the Ascend P2 downloads HD movies in minutes, and loads online videos, web pages, songs or e-Books in seconds. Huawei's proprietary 'swift sharing' supports uploads and downloads two to three times faster than other smartphones in a Wi-Fi environment. With its NFC module*, Ascend P2 enables e-payments and can act as an electronic ticket. Huawei's unique Quick Power Control (QPC) and Automated Discontinuous Reception (ADRX) power-saving technologies, reduces power consumption by 30% and charging time by more than 25% compared to other smartphones.
Continuing the fashion focus of Huawei's Ascend P smartphones, HUAWEI Ascend P2 evokes the image of an infinity pool with its seamless, elegant design and curvy contours. Using in-cell technology, its LCD 4.7-inch IPS HD touchscreen is an impressive 8.4mm slim. Its 'magic touch' feature provides enhanced screen responsiveness even with gloves, and instant keyword translation and Wikipedia searches can now be done on a single window with 'smart reading'. The screen also calibrates its brightness automatically under any light conditions, allowing users to perform any function, under any light.
The HUAWEI Ascend P2 provides optimal photo and video features including a 13 MP BSI rear-facing camera with HDR, and a 1.3 MP front-facing camera to support self-portrait and video shooting. A dedicated camera key on the side of the phone also allows instant access to picture taking, click once for the camera to be activated and another time to take the shot. With Huawei's advanced camera algorithm, high-definition images can be captured even in backlit conditions. Auto adjustment modes further enable Ascend P2 to produce photos that rival professional cameras.
The Huawei Emotion UI*, available on the Ascend P2 is easy to use and customize. The UniHome function combines home panels with the main menu, while Huawei's patent-pending Me Widget better utilizes screen real-estate by combining all the information and functions you need in a single, customizable widget. Emotion UI is also pre-installed with a smartphone housekeeper function to support real-time data traffic tracking, automatic blacklisting and blocking, periodical system cleaning, and spontaneous exiting of idle programs and cache cleanup, in addition to anti-virus, energy saving, privacy protection, software management, and more.
The Ascend P2 will also be available globally around the second quarter of 2013.
*This function is available in selected markets only.

Huawei Ascend P2 to arrive with 720p display because 1080p is unnecessary on less than 5" phones?

Huawei's upcoming Ascend P2 won't exactly be keeping up with the other flagship devices for the first half of this year, because Huawei think that full 1080p on a smartphone less than 5" in size is unnecessary. Instead the new P2 will be rocking a 720p screen, something which we expect to become very mid-range this year.

The word came from Huawei's Mobile Division head, Richard Yu, who made his point on China's answer to Twitter, Sina Weibo. He said that because the human eye can't distinguish much more detail than magic 326ppi on 'Retina displays' that he doesn't see the point in screens that reach the crazy 400ppi totals!

Because of translation problems his exact words are very difficult to pin down, but he said something along these lines:
"That many manufacturers are beginning to focus on 1080p screen. Such a high PPI does not have practical significance... 720p resolution is sufficient, as it's more than 300PPI... [The] processor power consumption [would be] significantly increased, and battery life decreased, [so 1080p screens] do more harm than good." [Machine translation with editing to make understandable.]
This isn't too major news because Huawei's P-range isn't the premier device in their range, but it'd be nice to have a best in class screen nonetheless. At the moment we don't know much more about the P2 other than rumours. If those rumours are to be believed then the P2 will be packing a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, Android Jelly Bean, a 13MP camera and a very solid 3,000mAh battery.

Microsoft announce the 4Afrika project: Everything you need to know!

Please excuse us for starting this post in a slightly philosophical manner, but it's not every day that we spot something like this. In a world where big business in the West, and indeed the East now, is driven by how many billions worth of profit can be counted at the end of a financial year, it's always refreshing and warming to see a fraction of this money being reinvested in things which help countries which don't necessarily have the things we do as we sit comfortably on our beds or office chairs and read this. We know that Microsoft has done this for their own future gain, but that doesn't wholly detract from the benefits of the project we're about to describe.

Yesterday Microsoft announced the 4Afrika project. The ultimate goal of the work is to "improve the continent’s global competitiveness" and the goals are lofty. By 2016, the 4Afrika Initiative is seeking to have helped "place tens of millions of smart devices in the hands of African youth, bring 1 million African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) online, upskill 100,000 members of Africa’s existing workforce, and help an additional 100,000 recent graduates develop employability skills, 75 percent of which Microsoft will help place in jobs. In doing these things, we believe we can help ignite African innovation for the continent and for the world."

"We believe we can help ignite African
innovation for the continent and for the world
."

Microsoft aren't being silly here, Africa is the last real place left in the world which is under-developed. Africa is a continent which is home to more than a billion people, there's 16 of the 30 fastest growing economies there and as Microsoft put it "We believe there has simply never been a better time to invest in Africa and in the African people. We view the continent as a game changer in the global economy. We believe deeply in the potential of technology to change Africa, but we believe equally in the potential of Africa to change technology for the world."

So what does Microsoft actually
want to achieve here?

Well there's a few 'key undertakings' which Microsoft's initiative features and a whole host of smaller goals too. Lets start with the biggest two and go from there!

Huawei 4Afrika.

This is what Microsoft has described as the "first critical step toward accelerating the adoption of smart devices" in Africa. Essentially Huawei will be producing a device running Windows Phone 8 which will be preloaded "with select applications designed by Africans, for Africa."

Essentially this is a rebranded Huawei W1 Windows Phone. It sports a 4-inch 480 x 800 display, dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor, front and rear-facing cameras, and 4GB of internal storage.

One of the key features is the claimed stand-by time which is rated at a mammoth 420 hours! That works out to slightly more than two whole weeks!

The phone will be available at the end of the month  in Angola, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.  If you're after more in-depth details about the phone then you can check out the full details on the Windows Phone Blog here or the press release here.

It's interesting that Huawei are the first people to get involved in this project officially. Their website outlines some of their success on the African continent already. The company earned $3.42 billion from Africa in 2011 and there's a 15% growth rate year-over-year. The company already has more than 5,800 employees across 18 offices and 60% of them are locally recruited. Their portfolio also includes an R&D centre in South Africa and 7 training centres located in Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa.

White Spaces Pilot.

For the 'White Spaces Pilot' Microsoft has teamed up with the Kenyan Ministry of Information and Communications and Kenyan ISP Indigo Telecom. Essentially the project will see Microsoft offering "low-cost, high-speed, wireless broadband to Kenya as part of a pilot project called “Mawingu,” which is Kiswahili for cloud." The service will hopefully offer "new opportunities for commerce, education, healthcare and delivery of government services."

The first location to be served by the project near Nanyuki will cover five institutions with internet access; Burguret Dispensary (healthcare clinic), Male Primary School, Male Secondary School, Gakawa Secondary School and Laikipia District Community Library hopefully aiding education and business progress at the same time.

Peter Henderson, chairman of Indigo Telecom, explained how this project would give people not only internet access, but a genuine involvement with the broader project:
“Indigo is committed to finding and deploying the best solutions for our customers’ needs, which in this case means bringing broadband access to previously unserved communities... Beyond simply providing access, we have given the community a real stake in the pilot’s success by creating a cooperative to manage the project, an effort that included hiring and training a local community member to serve as the lab technician.”
   Microsoft's Paul Garnett added that:
“Kenya is one of the countries leading the way in using this innovative solution, and we hope regulators around the world take note and develop legal frameworks that support broader commercial deployment of TV white space technology in their own jurisdictions.”
The initiative if successful will hopefully lead to a wider roll out of solar-powered base stations working within TV white spaces to areas currently lacking even basic electricity. Hopefully this project will bring some much needed infrastructure to these areas too! Microsoft's full press release is available here and an interesting commentary on the project from Redmond's finest is available too!

Microsoft has a whole host of other
smaller projects here too!

In the huge list of ultimate aims, which can be found here or here, Microsoft has some smaller projects of considerable note.

One of the most the most interesting is the North African Female empowerment portal which seeks to "empower young women to play a leadership role in their communities, build their skills and self-esteem, and introduce new models for self-employment." The project launches in March as an branch of the MasrWorks IT skills portal and the key aim is to "provide IT skills training and softer-skills training on topics including leadership, self-confidence and interviewing, as well as the mentorship needed to build a long-term career in technology." The service will be run through a collective effort between Microsoft and their partners, as well as local non-governmental groups!

The Afrika Academy is similar, but it will be more of an "educational platform, leveraging online and offline learning tools, to help Africans develop both technical and business skills for entrepreneurship and improved employability." The training will be offered for free to higher-education graduates, government leaders and the Microsoft partner community.

On a more profit orientated note there are plans to increase Nokia and Windows Phone adoption in Kenya and Nigeria with user training from Safaricom in Kenya and Bharti Airtel in Nigeria to help drive Nokia Lumia 510 and Nokia Lumia 620 Windows Phones. This will help to drive smartphone adoption which is currently around 10 percent in these countries.

That's pretty much it folks, but check out the introductory video and the infograph below just to round out the whole picture!

IDC show off mobile sales numbers for Q4 2012!

The quarterly results in smartphone sales are in and as always the IDC's statistics make very interesting reading! The most interesting data from our point of view is the smartphone data and that is what we'll consider.

Naturally Samsung and Apple turned out to be number one and two in terms of shipped devices just like normal. But, after those normal candidates we've seen Huawei leapfrog Sony into third place and there's ZTE bringing up fifth place!

Interestingly everyone inside the top five saw growth in double digits and there was exceptional growth for both Samsung and Huawei, both of whom saw growth above 75% year-over-year! Every one else did well, but we were surprised to see Huawei's Chinese competitor ZTE only record growth just above 10%!

With regard to smartphone sales in general they were all quite high in Q4 2012, there were 219.4 million units, which equates to 45.5% of all mobile phones, which is the highest percentage ever sold. This was a solid growth of 36.4% year-over-year, although the IDC were slightly disappointed that this came in below their forecasted growth rate of 39.5%!

For the whole year though the totally added up to 712.6 million smartphones which were shipped in the whole of the year, a 44.1% increase from 2011.

21/01/2013: Samsung's supposed MWC tablets! The Xperia Tablet Z announced! Updates galore and Samsung's US ads turn on Blackberries! Plus much, much more!

Sony announces the Xperia Tablet Z!

At the crack of dawn this morning Sony made the Xperia Tablet Z official, only a matter of days after we covered the leaked spec sheet. Surprisingly, it turns out that the leak was very close to what we saw this morning!

So the Tablet Z is packing a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, as well as 2GB RAM, a very healthy 32GB of storage, 8.1 megapixel rear camera, along with NFC, LTE, a microSD card slot and Sony's "S-Force" virtual surround sound technology, we're not sure how effective this will be though. The whole thing will be running Android 4.1, but these are the more mundane specs, the best is yet to come.

The crowning glories of this tablet are two things really. The first of which is a new high for Sony and that's the 10.1-inch 1,920x1,200 screen with the Mobile Bravia Engine 2! The best Sony's tablets offered before was a 1,280x800p 9.4" display, so this is a considerable step up.

The second stand out feature is the size! The Tablet Z comes in a tiny 6.9mm thick form factor, which weights in at a mere 495g. Both of these steal the titles of world's thinnest and world's lightest tablet away from Toshiba's Excite 10 LE. To top the whole thing off you'll be happy to know that it is both waterproof and dustproof so hopefully it'll be pretty durable.

At the moment the only concern we have is that the battery is a 6,000 mAh unit, so we'll see how well it holds up when the first hands on reviews start trickling in. If you're interested in the device you can pick it up in either black or white, but at the moment we're not sure of cost or availability, we have a suspicion we'll have to wait for MWC to find that out! If we hear anything though we'll be sure to let you know!

The full press release is available here, unfortunately it's in Japanese!

Samsung devices rumoured for MWC launches!

We've been hearing a fair bit lately about what we can expect to see at MWC next month and today we've heard rather a lot of details about Samsung's supposed plans.  There's a couple of codenames and things which have now been confirmed, but most of the details are about Samsung's tablets so far because we're not expecting to hear any news on the next Galaxy S device until May! So what are these tablets that we have to look forward to?

Kona AKA the Galaxy Note 8.0:
The Kona is the one device that we already know is definitely arriving, as Samsung's J. K. Shin has already confirmed to iNews24 that this, the Galaxy Note 8.0, will definitely be unleashed at MWC in Barcelona. The tablet will feature a solid 8-inch 1280x800 LCD display, 5 and 1.3-megapixel cameras on the front and back respectively. There will also be 2GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of internal storage, which is microSD expandable. The whole thing will be running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on a 1.6GHz quad-core processor.

Santos:
This is the codename for the third set of Galaxy Tabs! The last two years we've been presented with two tablets; one a 7" device and the other a 10.1" tablet, both of which are traditionally quite cheap as far as Samsung devices go! This year probably won't be any different, but we're told to expect some 5-megapixel cameras and two variants of each tablet and both the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + 3G options will be offered!

Roma:
This is the tablet that we know the least about and it will supposedly be a high-end device that will come with a 5-megapixel camera and either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. That's all the details we know at the moment, but this could just be a deduction from the people who posted the stories first, but it seems to be quite logical information.

If we hear any more about any of the devices we will be sure to let you know!

In other news:

  • Samsung have announced that there will be a new NFC-equipped version of the Galaxy S3 Mini arriving in the UK! This will bring with it the 'beam' functionality Samsung's higher end devices currently offer. We're not sure this new variant will be for everyone, but if you do use NFC a lot then this could be worth your while, but we definitely think you can get a lot more for your money!
    Via ZDNet.
  • There's rumours circling the web that there could be a new 4.8" iPhone coming later in the year! As with all Apple related products this rumour should be taken with a huge pinch of salt until there's an actual announcement from Apple.
    Via Mashable.
  • LG has said that the supply problems with the Nexus 4 are because Google underestimated how popular the device would be. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and previous Nexus devices sales figures meant Google expected much lower demand for the new phone, which would actually explain quite a lot! But, apparently this will be rectified in the coming months!
    Via ZDNet.
  • The guys over on XDA have managed to get hold of a couple of screenshots of the supposed Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for Sony's Xperia S. There's a few issues, most notably with the font, pictured right, but the update isn't actually due to arrive for quite a while yet, it's due in April, so it's good to see the work is well under way. With a bit of luck Sony might even beat their April target!
    XDA Via XperiaBlog.
  • Talking of updates, Samsung Thailand has seemingly confirmed Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean will be coming to the lovely AMOLED-screened Galaxy Tab 7.7! But, that's not all Samsung's Galaxy Camera will reportedly get an update with new shooting modes and a bump to Android 4.1.2!
    Via SamMobile and AndroidCentral.
  • RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins, has hinted at the possibility of selling off the hardware division or licensing the software which they hope they can utilise for the next decade.
    His exact words were:
"There are several options, including the sale of the hardware production is as much as licensing our software." [via Google translate] Die Welt Via Slashgear.

  • January the 31st is now the day earmarked by various places around the internet for the release of Windows Phone 7.8! This is nothing official but the amount of official Facebook pages which have suggested this as the date makes us all but certain that this is when the update will be landing!
    Via WPCentral.
  • Huawei has posted their 2012 earnings and things are looking really quite good for the Chinese giants. Huawei generated $35.4 billion worth of revenue, which when all was said and done worked out to $2.48 billion worth of profit! Huawei also expect to see growth in phone sales and they don't expect to see the strange anti-trust issues with America hamper growth as we push into 2013!
    Huawei Via Engadget.
  • Sky are offering a new SkyGo options! SkyGo Extra will cost you £5 extra per month and will offer you the option to download movies and tv shows to your phone or tablet, which should help you push through those tedious train journeys in the morning and evening, without costing you the earth on your phone bill! Subscribers will also be allowed four users per account. There will be an initial two month free trial before you'll have to start paying the £5 extra!
    Via TheGadgetShow.

And finally, Samsung seemingly isn't content with just poking fun at Apple with their adverts for America, today they showed off an advert which targets Blackberry owners. The point is to show that it is not just Blackberry phones which offer business users security and good options. Naturally there's a little demo of Samsung's 'multi-view' feature and some of the other merits of the Galaxy S3 and Note 2!

14/01/2013: Huawei to create an 8-core processor to rival Samsung and retake 'world's thinnest smartphone title! Apple cut component orders, but it's not the horror tale some are telling and much, much more!

Huawei set to join Samsung's Octa-core party and retake 'world's thinnest smartphone' title!
Huawei are causing quite a stir at the moment: not only are they offering a great line-up of phones, but they also seem to be going after the high-end as well and punching with the famous old big boys from Korea, Japan and America.

So with Samsung's demonstration of ARM's big.LITTLE processor still fresh in our minds, Huawei's Richard Yu took to Engadget's CES stage one last time to dish the dirt on Huawei's plans for the future. Yes, Huawei will also being challenging Samsung in the octa-core department in the second half of this year, but we're not currently sure whether they will be using their own HiSilicon K3V3 chipset or whether it'll be a new one, either way Engadget says it will be made by TSMC.

But, that's not all! During CES we saw Alcatel take away a title that Huawei claimed for the vast majority of last year, with their Ascend P1 (pictured above): 'the world's thinnest smartphone manufacturer' and now Huawei want it back. So keep your eyes peeled at MWC because a new device will be coming to Huawei's P series which will beat out Alcatel's brand new One Touch Idol Ultra! Yu also revealed that the device will come housed in a metal body, so not only will it be uber thin but with a little bit of luck it'll also be quite the looker too!

Apple cut orders for iPhone 5 parts in December, but it's not necessarily the bad news which is widely reported!

Apple's iPhone 5 launch was received with a huge fanfare, they shipped over five million devices in the first weekend of the devices availability! But, it seems that of late things haven't been all plain sailing, after Apple reported asked "Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd to roughly halve supplies of LCD panels from an initial plan for about 65 million screens in [the] January-March" period.

This prompted Apple's shares to fall just over 4 percent to $498.20 at the close of play today, down from $520.30 on Friday evening on the Nasdaq, because of a report from the Wall Street Journal covering news which landed in December. Nonetheless, some analysts have said that there has been a 'weaker than expected demand' for the iPhone 5 and this may have something to do with the issue, but then again Apple sold record numbers on the first weekend of sales so we think it's quite likely that loyal customers picked their new devices up then, instead of throughout the year.

The Wall Street Journal, however, explains that this might not be an issue of demand, like some people are making out. Instead, Apple may have over-compensated and made larger than normal orders for components immediately after the devices launch, because of the initial popularity and the "concerns about manufacturing difficulties with some components such as screens", an idea put forward by Sanford Bernstein analyst Alberto Moel. We're inclined to go along with this argument because Apple uses a lot of custom parts so it's in their interests to have too many than not enough!

Either way, one of Japan Display's plants will likely have to reduce their output by up to 80% from their output between October and December, according to the Nikkei reports and Sharp's own facility which is solely dedicated to producing iPhone 5 LCD panels will lower production by around 40%.

So that's the reality now but, according to Forbes this is a natural progression in the product cycle, which would support the large initial order theory. UBS' Steve Milunovich said to Forbes that:

"In December, we reduced our iPhone 5 estimates by 5 million a quarter due to the 30% production cut being reported out of Asia. At that time, our analysts estimated that March quarter iPhone 5 production would be 25-30 million and 4/4S 3-5 million. How much of the reduction was a result of inventory rebalancing vs. lower demand was unclear, but the cut was greater than seasonal so we took the conservative route."
So yes there has been a cut in orders and we're not sure why this is, but at the moment it's not a cause for concern and neither Apple or their suppliers has come forward to offer an explanation, but Apple's Q4 earnings report will be in soon and that will probably clear up the situation!

In other news:

  • Baidu and France Telecom have teamed up on a new mobile browser for emerging markets. The browser, which launched today, will hopefully help France Telecom's plans to satisfy the steady stream of people moving to 3G devices and Baidu wants to give this movement a little push along! The browser is available in English and Arabic and it is currently available for Android smartphones running on France Telecom's operator Mobinil in Egypt! We assume it is just this browser which will be pre-installed in phones, but we'll let you know if we hear more!
    Via Reuters.
  • RIM's shares jumped up as much as 11% today because of the excitement surrounding their BB10 release at the end of the month and the lack of competition from CES. The latter was expected, but it seems investors are a bit more confident BB10 can turn things around! The OS also saw 15,000 app submissions in the last 36 hours as developers were offered $100 per app submission and the promise of some BB10 hardware if you submitted a lot of apps!
    Via Reuters and CNet.
  • According to Anandtech Acer is readying a display with a resolution of 2880x1620 pixels. The 15.6" (ish) screen will basically be a challenger to Apple's QWXGA+ display, but instead of having Apple's 16:10 aspect ratio it will employ the 16:9 ratio instead. Thankfully it's not just a race for pixels, the display will be IPS and apparently it is a very good offering! We look forward to seeing it in a laptop near you soon!
  • AppStats have published some research showing that Instagram lost more than half of it's users recently, probably something to do with the whole 'policy change issue', but there hasn't been much of a resurgence! Facebook on the other hand is reported to have lost over 600,000 users in December if you believe the Guardian!
    Via Slashgear.
  • Samsung's Galaxy S range and it's three phones has now shipped over 100million devices! 40 million of those are Galaxy S3's and we expect by this time next year the company will hit 150million if the Galaxy S4 turns out to be everything it's cracked up to be!
    Via Slashgear.
And finally, the lovely little tablet pictured below is the Asus MemoPad (Forgive us for not capitalising it in the right places!). It's a 7" tablet designed to compete with Acer's new Iconia B1-A71! So on the inside you've got Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a 1GHz VIA WM8950 CPU with a Mali-400 GPU, 8 or 16GB of internal storage, 5GB of Asus WebStorage, 1GB of RAM and a 1MP front-facing camera which can manage 720p video! You'll have your normal range of connections, although there's not infrared port on this guy! On the outside you have a 10-point multi-touch LED-backlit display with 1024 x 600 resolution, 140-degree viewing angles, which can also manage 350-nit brightness. The whole thing will run for about 7hours on the 4270mAh battery. The RRP is $149 USD so it will be very much a budget device!
