Asus to show off a FonePad at MWC?

Asus has seen quite a lot of success with their Android tablets. There's something about their  use of quality materials and their consistently fast updates which keeps people happy. So when the little beauty, supposedly pictured above, popped up on Tablet.bg we were instantly intrigued because this is meant to be a budget device. The Asus slate rocking the model number ME371MG has supposedly been used by Tablet.bg said that the tab "made an impression on us with his performance, which you can see in the list below, and elegant aluminum housing, which is expected to be available. There will be the ability to make phone calls." [Translated]

If all of that is true then this is very interesting indeed and it's probably the much rumoured FonePad which Digitimes talked about the other day! Naturally we're reluctant to believe anything until we hear conclusively from Asus at MWC, but we would love to see this device there! Just to round out the picture Tablet.bg also said there will be:

  • Single core Intel Atom Z2420 processor running between 1 and 2Ghz with PowerVR SGX540 graphics.
  • 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display.
  • 1 GB of RAM.
  • 3 megapixel rear and 1.2 megapixel front camera.
  • 8, 16 or 32GB of internal memory which is MicroSD expandable.
  • Dimensions: 196.6 x 120.1 x 10.4 mm.
  • Weight: 340g.
  • Sensors including an accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor and light sensor.
  • Battery capacity of 4270 mAh for up to 9.5 hours of constant usage.
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
We can't wait to see if this turns out to be a real device and if it comes in at a reasonable price then Asus will definitely have a hit on their hands here!

13/12/2012: Google Maps for iOS and a plethora of other app updates, Jelly Bean for Verizon Galaxy S3's and much more!

Apps get updates: Everything from GMaps for iOS to iPlayer for Android!

Everyone loves apps! We use them all the time on our phones and tablets and for whatever reason today has been a hot day for apps and app updates in particular! There's a few major ones to go through so hold tight!

Google Maps for iOS!
Google iPhone app screenshots
Google maps for iOS supports 2D, 3D and Street View(Credit: BBC).
This will be the most popular one without doubt! It's the return of Google's maps to iOS! For whatever reason Apple gave Google's solution the boot with the introduction of iOS6. Apple's new maps weren't received very well; Australian police still advise you not to use them and even Tim Cook himself suggested people use other (Nokia (now called Here)) maps while Apple ironed out the teething problems!

But alas we don't have that problem any more! Google's Maps are back with 2D, 3D and street view options in tow! There's also turn-by-turn navigation, although it lacks the indoor maps, the ability to download maps for offline viewing, and voice search which you get on the Android version of the app, although that shouldn't upset most people!

Google Now for Android.
Google Now received another update today, but at the moment we're not sure what this update brings to the organiser!

BBC iPlayer for Android.
The BBC has today posted a blog post outlining their commitment to providing the best quality of iPlayer for the vast range of devices which run Android. They said it is this diversity which has caused them problems, but they're now working to making Android updates happen quickly and in a comparable time frame to their iOS updates!

The BBC said their three mains goals are:

1. Improve the playback experience.
2. Achieve feature parity between iOS and Android.
3. Support a variety of screen sizes.
The guys finished off by outlining their plans for the future:
"Before Christmas we're going to enable iPlayer on Jellybean 4.2 and offer a richer tablet experience on devices such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.
Thereafter--with Adobe and Google's help--we'll improve playback on devices like the Sony Xperia Arc. Into 2013 we'll prioritise the most popular Android devices so we can deliver the best experience for the biggest audience. As you can see this is just the beginning."

Hopefully this will mean a much better tablet UI, which isn't too shoddy already, and then much better playback on other devices which have some issues at the moment!

Google apps for Windows platforms.
Google has offered a rather brutal condemnation of Microsoft's platforms in a recent interview from Clay Bavor, Google's Director of Product Management for Google Apps. He was speaking with V3 when he said
“We have no plans to build out Windows apps. We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8. If that changes, we would invest there, of course."
   Ouch! Sorry Windows users!

Google Magazines comes to the UK.
And finally, Magazines are available for your phone or tablet in the UK! You have the ability to purchase individual issues or a subscription and have it automatically delivered on publication day. If you're lucky you could also get “Interactive” versions of magazines which have "more in-depth features, videos, animations, and other content."

We'll have to wait until Softbank’s buyout of Sprint is confirmed before this one will take place!

Are you about to get fast mobile internet near you?

    HTC announce the One X+.

After a couple of leaks earlier in the week made this one of HTC's worst kept secrets in a while, the company has officially confirmed their brand spanking new One X+.

The comparisons to the Sensation XE have been acknowledged by HTC themselves, but it's a great attention-grabbing colour scheme and it certainly looks great to our eyes!

    iPhone 5 'teething problems'?

The latest iPhone has again been greeted with huge queues in London and Tokyo today, as well as having over 2 million people pre-order and have the device shipped to their homes today, but is all as rosey as it seems? Now the title might be slightly misleading here, but those of you who have got an iPhone 5 and or iOS6 on your device will have noticed a couple of issues.

The first of which will impact anyone with a device that will be running iOS6! You may have noticed that since the update you've lost Google Maps and it's been replace with Apple's own solution, aptly named, iOS Maps. Now, we know this is a new solution, but some of the things we've been hearing throughout the day have been nothing short of ridiculous. Lets start with Stratford-Upon-Avon, the town where Shakespeare was born, well that's not even in the maps at the moment.

To the right you can see for yourself how Apple's Maps see Colchester, in Essex.

But, there's an almost endless list of bloopers; for example Luton is apparently soon to become a popular tourist destination, having been relocated to the coast!

Someone on the London Underground is obviously a tech fan and put this little announcement up at Hackney Wick station. (Right).

    a3qarhsciaa2r9u

Apple, in recent times have also been huge proponents of uniqueness and creating your own designs. But, it seems they are dismissing their own advise today after iOS6 featured one of the world's most famous clock faces, which appears to have been lifted almost straight from Switzerland. The clock itself is so important because it was originally designed by Hans Hilfiker and is described as an icon for the Swiss railway and Switzerland. The clock design is trademarked and copyrighted so Apple may well find themselves in some hot water for this slightly hippocritical blunder. The two designs are just below, in a nice side by side comparison and to quote Apple it does seem like this is a 'slavish copy' of the frequently licensed design?

The final issue only affects the iPhone 5 and it's not so much of an issue as a feature. Basically your new 8mp camera can only take 4mp stills in low-light conditions. The reason for this is because Apple has boosted low light performance, they've had to implement 'quad-pixel oversampling' to make the pictures clearer and just better. So it's a fair trade and many of you will be a lot happier with the new pictures than the old ones.

Google threatened to cut Acer off the Android list!
    Via CoolSmartPhone.

Now we should take this one with a pinch of salt as it's straight from one of Google's Chinese arch enemies! The story goes that after a phone collaboration between the Acer and Alibaba was shelved at the very last minute!

The pair has been planning to launch the 'CloudMobile A800' smartphone together, but Reuter's has said the event itself was strangely written off after Acer was told that “Google would terminate Android product cooperation” if the phone was revealed.

Unsurprisingly Acer has been schtum on the matter, but Alibaba has been harder to silence, they came out and announced that “Our partner received notification from Google that if the new product launch with Aliyun went ahead, Google would terminate Android product cooperation and related technical authorization with Acer.” The company went on to say that Google’s decision was “clearly unfair to consumers” and it's pretty hard to disagree.

At the moment we have no idea what the next move will be and we don't expect to hear anything out of Google or Acer soon! Perhaps it was Aliyun's plan to run Android apps which tipped the balance?!?!

But, we'll leave you with Alibaba's take on the whole situation; “We believe that by introducing the Aliyun OS we are giving consumers and hardware makers more options which is the foundation of a healthy and strong market. We think that it should be left to the market to decide.”

    In other news:

    • LG has teased a press event for the unveiling of a quad-core Qualcomm based phone. We expect this to be the LG Optimus G and we will give you all the details when the event happens!
    • Wii U pricing! If you're based in the US it'll be $299.99 for the Basic version, while the Deluxe will be $349.99. For European's pricing will be released on November 30 by individual retailers.
    • The iPhone 5 will be available on Cricket, in the USA, as a prepaid phone!
    • iPhone 5 won’t work with some accessories even with Lightning adapter!
And finally, Motorola and Intel have an event coming up together and on the eve of the release Intel have said that they have optimised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Medfield powered phones!!!

    HTC, Motorola and the future!

Before I start it's worth offering up a little disclaimer. I live in the UK, our choice of phones is decidedly different from you guys over the pond in the USA. For starters we didn't get any of the Motorola Droid series, after the Droid 2 (read: Milestone 2), we only got the Razr Maxx available in big chain stores in the last 2 weeks and we get pretty much every HTC phone going!

So what's the point of this discussion? Well both companies are doing average-poor in their financial statements and there are clear reasons, in my mind, why each of them is struggling and bare in mind that these are just my opinions and for the record I have a Galaxy S3 and Sony Tablet S, so there's no vested interest!

Firstly, lets start with Motorola because they're easier to tackle! Firstly, the company in the last few years has failed to compete with the Samsung's and Apple's of this world and to an extent they are struggling at the moment. At the moment if you head over to their UK page you will find 14 phones for sale; the competitive of which is the Motorola Razr/Razr Maxx and yes both of these phones are nice, but given the choice would you buy one of them over a Galaxy S3? Probably not, you'd rather stump up the extra £5 a month!

Motorola almost totally missed the boat because when the Razr was announced in November 2011 Google was days away from showcasing the Galaxy Nexus, with it's 720p HD screen, which simply trumps the Razr's! The phone was almost outdated from the moment it launched.

Hopefully the freshly announced Razr M and it's 'bezel-less display' will help, although the Intel processor might well put off a few people. The Razr HD and Razr HD Maxx are once again good but they're very much the 4S to the iPhone 4, if you get that little analogy.

Thankfully the Razr got ICS, but only after Jelly Bean was announced!
My criticism doesn't stop there; Motorola also have an issue with updates; that issue is that they're terrible with them! If you're lucky you'll see one update on your phone. That simply isn't competitive any more; Samsung and HTC crank out updates for the vast majority of their phones quickly and they often get them through two versions of Android! Even Sony have learnt the wonders of software updates lately and they've been widely praised for their work, so hopefully Motorola will see the light!

Quite simply that's where Motorola's problem is; they're not challenging high-end phones and that's where Samsung and Apple are making their money. Hopefully Google have got Moto's teams working behind the scenes to create something amazing for the event on September the 5th because they'll have to compete with the Galaxy S3, the new iPhone, new Lumia devices, the stunning Samsung Ativ S and HTC's competent, if not mind blowing, One X and S. That's the competition and devices will have to wow consumers to turn their heads.

Motorola would also do well to actually offer their phones in Europe! We can help you guys shift some phones, but not if they're not on sale here! It might be a strategic move on Motorola's part to tackle the US and China, but it's slightly frustrating for us keyboard lovers!
    The Sensation just looked dated.

HTC is a different beast entirely; people have said that things started going pear-shaped last year when they released too many Sensation devices. HTC had the Sensation, the Sensation XE and the Sensation XL, so I'm not entirely convinced that was the reason. Instead, I'd say that the Sensation series (with the exception of the XE) looked clunky and unfashionable. Yes, they were made of metal and felt good but they didn't look as good as an iPhone 4S or a Galaxy S2 did they?

That's the problem for HTC their aesthetic. The One Series was a good start, it looked relatively fresh and unique and HTC brought their A-game with the specs, even if they put a diddy little battery in the One X!

I think HTC knows that's the trouble too, but the company has a toss up between a complete departure from their current design language and the risk that runs of alienating their current device owners when they come to upgrade. HTC has also started focusing on battery sizes; they've been asking their Elevate users whether battery life is that important to them and whether perceived battery life is actually the reality, after all a little battery doesn't necessarily mean it won't last all day!

HTC aren't the company that concern me, they'll be fine they're trying to change and reassert themselves, but they need to get back to creating iconic devices; the Desire and the Legend were fantastic. Everyone instantly recognised them because they were so distinct and they caught people's eyes and that's what they need to get back to and maybe ditch sense too! It looks like a dodgy scarf in the Sensation above!!! Again in HTC's defence they've tried to refresh Sense in the One series and they've toned down the colour scheme and made it less intrusive!

So HTC and Motorola both are still competitive manufacturers and both have a place in Android's future. I'm confident both of them can offer compelling and competitive devices, sometimes though I just wish Google could make all Android phones and this is why...

HTC One X+ pops up on Twitter!

Given the proximity of HTC's press conference it's not surprising that we're starting to see some leaks! This one comes from Twitter where a source claims to know details of the much rumoured HTC One X+!

The purported new phone will have dimensions of 134.36 x 69.9 x 9.3mm and is relatively light at 129g. This time as well there's suggestions that we'll be seeing NVIDIA‘s enhanced Tegra 3+ AP37 1.6GHz quad-core processor, that has the 1.7GHz single-core processor for the less taxing tasks! Just for good measure there's also 1 GB of RAM and 32GB's ROM.

The main complaints with the original One X was the diddy little 1800mAH battery and if the leak has got this one right then the same battery is in this version too. That will likely be the main reason for bloggers to complain again! So if you're a textaholic or like playing your Angry Birds or Temple Run then sorry but we're ready for a short battery life again.

Finally, the software looks to be coming in the form of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean masked by HTC’s Sense 4.5.

If the source is to be believed then the specs look relatively solid and it'll be another solid phone, but we expect that battery will be putting people off again!

    In other news:

    • It's been reported that there will be more than just an iPhone reveal on September the 12th! It seems like we'll be getting some iPod refreshes too!
    • There has been a lot of rumours of an Amazon phone recently but Amazon CEO, John Bezos, has today confirmed that there's no current plans to announce one but there are more devices coming next year, but at the moment it'd be "premature" to talk about them and there won't be one "any time soon". An enigmatic answer and it's looking like Amazon has their sights set on a phone after all!
    • Keep your eyes peeled for the next iPhone to be available on September 21st! That's the rumour of the day!
    • UK carrier Everything Everywhere (Orange/T-Mobile) has announced a press conference on September 11th, the day before the next iPhone is launched to talk about their plans for their future! An LTE iPhone in the UK?!?! We can hope!
    • Slashgear has today reported that Apple and Samsung's recent courtroom battles has seen the Cupertino company reign in their reliance on the South Korean giants. Slashgear said they've seen reports from Reuters and Bloomberg that say
"Samsung's memory and displays will be absent from the first batch of Apple's new iPhone, insiders claim, after pricing and legal disagreements saw the Cupertino firm slash orders from its long-time rival. Patent fight tensions and arguments over costs have led to a stalemate of sorts... though Apple is also believed to be working to reduce its reliance on any one individual company. However, Apple hasn't been able to entirely oust Samsung from its iPhone 5 supply chain: the processor powering the new smartphone will apparently still be produced by the South Korean firm."
    •  Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD will hit UK and Europe on October 25!

And finally, is this HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 device that's been codenamed the Accord? If so it'll be called the HTC 8X, which is a pretty cool name and a pretty slick looking phone!

OEM's have barely opened the Jelly Bean packet!

Android; the world's most popular smartphone operating system and quite probably the world's most frustrating when it comes to updates. They seem to take absolutely forever to arrive and when they do manufacturers have issues ironing out the bugs.

At the moment the news isn't so good; yes there are over 1.3million daily Android activations, but not all of them ship with an up to date OS. Instead it seems like it's only Nexus devices that're rocking Jelly Bean at the moment with slightly more than 1/100 devices are running Jelly Bean.

It's worth remembering that most devices are still on Gingerbread and most of these probably will stay there until their owners upgrade. It's a frustrating situation all round but hopefully we'll see a lot more users rocking Jelly bean when Samsung gets round to updating the Galaxy S2 and S3!

    In other news:

    • Facebook has officially completed the Instagram buy-out today, completing the $1 billion deal.
    • Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices will reportedly be constructed in house buy Nokia and the company will be dropping the price of the Lumia 800 and 900 by $150 in a bid to shift them and make way for the newer models.
    • If you're holding out for a new TV from Apple you may very well be waiting a while because their talks with TV companies have reportedly been stalling of late.
    • Samsung has updated us on the amount of Galaxy S3's shipped and so far in 100 days of the phones availability they've sold 20million of the phones!

    06/08/2012

Samsung's rumoured Jelly Bean upgrade schedule.
    Courtesy of SamMobile!

'Good things come to those who wait', well that's at least what you have to tell yourself unless you own a Nexus phone or tablet! Samsung though are usually pretty good at updating their phones, especially their flagship S series of devices.

With the history in mind it seems the guys over at Sam Mobile have some good news for us from their insiders. They've reported today that the Jelly Bean firmware for the Galaxy S III has progressed passed the the testing stage and Samsung are reportedly already look to get a public version finished and approved for a late Q3/early Q4 roll-out.

For other phones there looks to be good news too. The Galaxy S II is 'still being tested for compatibility with Jelly Bean' but at the moment everything is “looking fine”. Given the amount of this phone Samsung has shifted and that the sales are continuing to go strong it's very likely you guys will see some 4.1 too! BUT, Sam Mobile added that if Samsung decides not to update the device to Jelly Bean, owners will receive a “Value Pack” in a similar fashion to what the OG Galaxy S got instead of Ice Cream Sandwich. The same goes for the Galaxy Note.

Assuming everything goes to play the S II and Note will get updated during the fourth quarter. Interestingly the upcoming Galaxy Note II is expected to land with Ice Cream Sandwich because it has been developed wiht that in mind. But, it’s unclear if Samsung will be able to get Jelly Bean on it for launch day. If it does land with just Android 4.0, then a 4.1 update will be ready for Q4!

HTC rumoured to be planning a 5" Full HD smartphone!

Lately it seems that Apple and Samsung have been having the smartphone market go everyway the pair turns. Apple stick solidly to yearly release cycle in a bid to maintain their exclusivity. Samsung on the other hand have bombarded the market with every shape and size of phone imaginable. Both strategies seem to have been hugely successful.

The latter, however, have almost created their own market segment with the 'phablet' form factor. The Galaxy Note was such a successful device that Samsung's South Korean rivals, LG, were forced to offer up their own alternative, the Optimus Vu.

Not one to leave a good thing behind, Digitimes has reported that HTC's heads have been turned the same way. The rumour goes that HTC is planning to combat the upcoming Galaxy Note 2 and the new iPhone with a 5" 1080p beast!

If the rumours are to be believed then the device will have a screen with a resolution of 1794x1080 pixels (but we expect it to be 1920x1080p but the Android menu buttons occupying the spare 126 pixels). Aside from that not very much is known at all, but so far we've had benchmarks leaked in July which suggest there is indeed a phone with a 1080p screen and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip. The device, when tested, doubled the score of the HTC One X and also beat out the Samsung Galaxy S III by a good distance. If that wasn't enough earlier in the year BGR reported that a HTC device with a 5-inch 1080p display would land on Verizon sometime in the Fall! It's looking likely!

    In other news:

    • Nokia have been tipped to show off their Windows Phone 8 devices in early September. With dual-core processors and HD displays, the phones will launch just ahead of Apple's iPhone which is rumoured for a mid to late September launch.
    • Samsung's long awaited Galaxy Note 10.1 productivity tablet is finally expected to hit shelves later this month with a 1.4Ghz quadcore processor and of course that stylus, sorry S Pen. You can catch a video teaser just below!
    •

    • ARM has been busy at work on new graphics improvements for it's Mali GPU's. It's latest attempt is the Mail-T600 which promises chips with up to 8 cores and a whole new level of graphics prowess!
And finally, below is a little picture of what is widely expected to be the next iPhone 'nano-Sim tray' and my goodness it's a whole lot smaller than the, already tiny, MicroSims!

Nexus 7 gets a good set of accessories.

By now many of you hardcore techies will be rocking Google's latest and greatest, the Nexus 7. But, until now, there has been a distinct lack of accessories, something both Asus and Google has been keen to change.

The UK retailer, MobileFun, has said the arrival of a host of extras is imminent and the options are looking good!

There's the rotating case (right) which will set you back £27.95 ($44), while the non-rotating counterpart will be £22.95 ($36). The folio case will be £39.99 ($62) and the top of the range Bluetooth keyboard case will be £79.95 ($125). And an official screen protector will set you back £14.95 ($23). All in all, a great range of options for a great device!

    • Apple has been reported to be the world's biggest computer shipper again. But their numbers are somewhat skewed by the inclusion of iPad's in that category. But, a great achievement nonetheless.
    • On the contrary analysts have predicted Microsoft's Surface tablets will sink when they arrive later in the year. Cost and lack of a 'wow factor' have been cited as the main reasons.
    • The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has managed to avoid Apple's injunction in the USA and will stay on sale!
    • The Japanese mobile tech giants have joined forces to take on Qualcomm and TI in developing wirelessly-enabled smartphone and tablet chipsets. The group involves Fujitsu, NTT DoCoMo, NEC and Fujitsu Semiconductor have created 'Access Network Technology Limited'. The new partnership promises "industry-leading communications platform products" and they aim to reduce the reliance on foreign-made wireless components.
    • Raspberry Pi, the little device designed specifically for hacking, has received a port of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. This is great news for those planning to run a home sound system or something similar off of the device. As well as this ICS is a great foundation so we can expect Jelly Bean will be up and running in no time!
    • 1 million people signed up to Microsoft's new Outlook.com email service in under 6 hours! It'll be interesting to see whether the number of constant users remains as high.
    • HP has said OpenWebOS will not be coming to current devices because it needs a processor that supports Linux Kernel version 3.3. Fear not Pheonix and other WebOS groups are on the case!
    • TAT founder abandons RIM well before BlackBerry 10 launches, deciding to opt for more start ups instead of sticking with RIM.

And finally, do you want to see the evidence Samsung was blocked from using in their current court case with Apple. Judge Koh blocked the company using it as evidence, so instead Sammy released the evidence to the press to show how they didn't copy the iPhone and how 'fundamental fairness' had been ignored in stopping this bit of evidence coming to court. We think the image speaks for itself even if both the Judge and Apple are annoyed now!

Sony planning a Tablet S refresh!

Mobiflip has today outed a new Sony Xperia Tablet. The picture above shows that the device is essentially a Tablet S refresh; sporting exactly the same iconic wedge design of the Tablet S.

Looks like Microsoft's Surface tablets has a bit of an influence too!
This time, however, the tablet is set to be slimline and splashproof, complete with Tegra 3 and a 9.4-inch 1280 x 800 display. The new tablet will be 11.85mm at its thickest point according to mobiFlip‘s premature documentation. This would overall add up to a 42-percent trim down, Sony claims, and this one will be made of aluminum rather than plastic!

On the camera front there's an 8-megapixel main camera which is paired with a 1-megapixel front facing camera, and there’s also a docking stand with three USB ports and an HDMI connection. Sony also throws in a clever Guest Mode, which allows for a separate interface – with limited access to apps and other data – for visitor use of the tablet, while keeping full Ice Cream Sandwich functionality locked away.

Interestingly the presentation also includes projected pricing; $449.99 for the 16GB model, rising to $549.99 for the $32GB, and $649.99 for the 64GB. The carrying cover will be $59.99 ($20 more for the leather version) and the keyboard cover will be $99.99.

As for docks, the Dock Speaker will be $119.99, the Docking Stand $99.99, and the Cradle $39.99. A Simple Stand – propping the tablet up at a choice of three angles – will be $24.99. The HDMI cable will be $29.99 and the USB Host cable $19.99.

When this device launches we'll see if it's possible to get a review to compare with the Tablet S and see if it's a worthy successor!

    Sony's update saga.

Sony, Sony, Sony... What're we going to do with you eyy?

      Today we've been told not to rule out Jelly Bean updates coming to any of their current devices. This news has come after they said their 2011 line up, which includes the Arc S and Mini Pro, would not be getting the update! Apparently we shouldn't rule out the possibility of these devices getting Jelly Bean just yet; the company said;

“We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.”
So there we have it. Don't give up hope just yet! The only thing we know for certain at the moment is that Sony don't know what they're doing just yet! The company is still in the midst of their ICS rollout so you can't blame them for not being entirely sure yet! We do expect their most recent crop of NXT devices will be getting updates, but probably early next year!

    In other news:
    • Nintendo needed their 3DS XL to do a good job on the sales front. Initial tips look good with the device reportedly shipping 200,000 units in the first 24 hours after it's launch!
    • RIM are reportedly cutting 3000 jobs on August 13th, sorry guys, the company just can't stop the rot.
    • Microsoft has integrated Facebook tagging into Bing search results.
    • Samsung is reportedly working on a new 11.8″ 2560×1600 tablet.
    • Samsung‘s product lead has lashed out at Apple‘s design patent case, describing the jury trial as “fighting over rectangles” and "defying common sense" and to be honest we have to agree!
And finally, Microsoft has launched Outlook.com as a Gmail competitor! It looks eerily familiar!

Asus and HTC offer a relatively comprehensive update list!

Asus has announced there will be a good amount of updates rolling out to their tablets. Owners who're definitely going to be getting some Jelly Bean action are owners any of the following; the ASUS Transformer Pad, the ASUS Transformer Pad Prime and the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity.

But... That's not the end of the story because Asus has expressly said:

“We are still investigating Jelly Bean updates for other devices, but we are not in a position to confirm whether any other products will be eligible for an update at the moment.”
So don't give up faith just yet, we still think there's a chance of other tablets being updated and we expect the OG Transformer will get some Jelly Bean because of how popular the device was!

On the HTC front it seems we misreported the news yesterday. The company has confirmed
there will be updates for the very top end of their One series. It's only the varients of the HTC One X and One S that have been confirmed so far. So for clarity that's the; HTC One X, One S and One XL, as they're known on different networks. Unfortunately the Sensation XL which was one of last years flagships has no word on whether there will be an update for that and the same is true for all the other Sensations from last years!

    In other news:
    • Lenovo's CEO has decided to reward his employees for their recent progress and the employees will be getting a little cut of his yearly bonus! Nice guy!
    • Google has bought out the popular email solution, Sparrow. The company has done some great work for iOS and Mac devices and the personnel have gone straight into Google's Gmail division.
    • Nokia's beautiful little N9 has been given a working port of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
    • Talking of Jelly Bean; the update has been delayed Down Under because of the strict nature of Emergency calls over in Aus. Vodafone Australia has postponed the update while they make sure everything conforms!
    • The London Eye will be a special treat during the London 2012 Olympics. Twitter comments about London 2012 will dictate the colour the landmark will glow at night. If the comments are good we'll get one colour, if they're bad then it's another colour and if they're anything else then well, you guessed, it another colour!
    • SkyGo is now available on your Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3!
    • Google's ad business pulled in $12billion in Q2, which is very, very good going!
