In Other News: 25/04/2013.


  • Oppo's Weibo page share details of the new R809T a device which has a 4.7-inch 720p touchscreen, an 8 MP rear and 2 MP front camera arrangement, an unspecified quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, along with 1 GB of RAM and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean! The whole thing is a mere 6.93mm thick, but at the moment there's no word on pricing or availability, but we can probably expect this to stay inside China!

  • TorrentFreak have spotted a patent filed by McAfee, the internet security firm, which says that they are working on a system to 'detect and prevent illegal consumption of content on the internet.' This is basically a blacklisting tool and we can see record companies paying a lot of money for companies to block websites with illegal files one. We'll keep an eye on this one!

  • Twitter for Mac has been updated for the first time in two years today! The update adds new languages, a host of  fixes, new photo sharing options and support for Retina displays amongst other things!

  • Blackberry have confirmed that Skype will their upcoming Q10 smartphone from day one! For those of you with a Z10 there's a bit more of a wait while Blackberry work on a software update to make everything play nice!

  • Sprint are rolling out updates to the Motorola Photon Q and the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Electron Q is getting Jelly Bean while the Galaxy S3 is getting multiview, just as T-Mobile are rolling out Android 4.1.1 to the HTC One S through a huge 675MB update!

  • LG are rolling out Jelly Bean to the Optimus L7 and the 4XHD in the UK!

  • Draw Something 2 is now available for iOS! You can buy it for $2.99 or you can have the game for free if you're prepared to deal with ads!

  • LG has promised a flexible display will be available by the end of the year on a mobile phone! Apparently this promise will be watched closely because yield on flexible displays are still said to be quite low!

And finally, a security hole has been found in the Viber app for Android which lets people bypass the lockscreen! Check it out in the video below, but don't worry too much because Viber have said that they're aware of the issue and that a fix is on the way!

  • BlackBerry's new qwerty-equipped Q10 is now up for pre-order and Phones4U is seemingly the most compelling place to order it from in the UK! If you get in quick (among the first 300 people) you'll get a totally free 64GB PlayBook thrown in! The phone is available for £36 a month on a contract or alternatively you can get one for £549.95 SIM-free! To get the deals check here!

  • Firefox have updated their browser's beta streams for Android and desktop users. Android users will son have open-source fonts to choose from to replace the default options and there's also some HTML5 compatibility tweaks. Desktop beta users will get more "do not track" options as well as the choice to re-open tab thumbnails that've previously been closed.

  • HMV have been bought out by Hilco in a £50 million deal. That deal will mean that 66 stores will go as will 930 jobs. There will however be 2,500 jobs saved and a tonne of stores kept open as part of the deal. There's also said to be a renewed emphasis on 'enhanced music and visual range' and electricals will not be sold by the company any more!   • Nokia have released their app Nokia Music for both Windows 8 and Windows RT devices! The app is essentially a full-sized version of the app for phones, but everything's correct and present so head over to the Windows Store here to get it!

  • Nokia Lumia 720 is now available in the UK for £22 per month on contract or £300 on pay as you go! You can get the phone from O2 here!

  • Google has confirmed that their forked version of Webkit called Blink, will soon be powering their Chrome browser. The guys are working fast and the new engine should be availabe in Chrome 28 in about 10 weeks time!

  • It turns out HTC's new Facebook powered smartphone, the HTC First, will run stock Android beneath that Home launcher. The phone is looking to be around $450 sim-free so it's not quite cheap enough to be a viable stock alternative to the LG Nexus 4. Facebook also confirmed that their launcher will eventually have ads, but they won't be tailored to users, they will just be like they are on the current Facebook app.
