Android 4.2.2 coming to a Nexus near you!

Over night AndroidPolice caught wind that some Reddit users were receiving an update to Android 4.2.2 on some of their Nexus devices. It started with a GSM Galaxy Nexus getting the update, which was swiftly followed by the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10!

As you can see the update promises "performance and stability" improvements, as well as some work on both the gesture typing and the multiple accounts features within the 47.6MB update. However, we're also hoping Google managed to implement the promised fixes to Bluetooth A2DP issues, but we're not sure yet and Google's 'WhatsNew' page didn't offer any more details. We haven't heard of any Nexus 4's getting the update yet, but Google might be working on a couple of other fixes for that device and if they can get the colour correction right with an extra week, then we'll be very pleased with that!

Have you got the update yet? If you have are the improvements noticeable? Let us know in the comments below! Oh and below are the screen grabs from the updated Galaxy Nexus!

  • Nvidia have shown off the prowess of their new Project Shield by offering a video demo of the handheld console playing Boarderlands 2! Naturally the game is being played via the PC, but nonetheless this is a good demonstration of what Project Shield and the Tegra 4 processor will bring to the party! Check out the video below for the full demo!

  • Google's Nexus 10 is now available to consumers in Japan! If you're interested you can head to the Play Store and order one for ¥36,800 (around $400) if you're after the 16GB model, or ¥44,800 (around $480) if you wanted the 32GB option!

  • Virgin Media has confirmed that it is currently in takeover talks with US cable company Liberty Global! If there is an agreement reached here then Liberty Global's chairman, John Malone, will restart a head-to-head rivalry with Rupert Murdoch.

Virgin confirmed that, "it is in discussions with Liberty Global, a leading international cable company, concerning a possible transaction. Any such transaction would be subject to regulatory and other conditions."

At the moment nothing is confirmed, but this is certainly an interesting takeover proposition and we'll have to wait and see what plays out over the next few days!

  • Amazon has announced that from May this year they will launch their own virtual currency called Amazon Coins. These coins will allow Kindle Fire users to purchase virtual items such as apps and games, as well as being options for buying in-game add-ons. Naturally this is another money making scheme from Amazon, but it seems like it could potentially be useful, especially for given children allowances for games and things like that!

  • Sony has launched the PlayStation Home Arcade for the PlayStation Vita today! This essentially brings you all your favourite arcade games right on your handheld console! The games which will be offered can be found here! There's a couple of free games, but most are $1.49 which in itself isn't too expensive! To install the PlayStation Home Arcade you need to download the app from the PS Vita's PlayStation Store. It's not there at the moment, but it should be soon!

  • Samsung have announced the Galaxy Fame and Galaxy Young! Both of these devices are aimed at the younger generation and teenagers, who tend to break there phones and so these cheaper options will give them the best mix of low price and all the apps they require! If you're interested in either of these devices then you can check out the press release here!
And finally, Blackberry have thanked developers by sending out over 12,000 red Blackberry Z10's to thank devs for their 'leap of faith' in supporting BB10! The device below certainly looks bold! Anyone else wishing they did these as retail units?

23/01/2013: Nintendo shows off 2013 for the Wii U, Black Ops 2 double XP, Microsoft to invest in Dell? Plus much, much more!

Nintendo shows us what 2013 holds for the Wii U!

Nintendo's Wii U console proved to be a popular option over Christmas as it racked in more money than the insanely popular Wii did over the first few months of availability. That wasn't down to number of sales, instead it was attributed to the slightly larger cost of the Wii U. Either way people still need games to play and a good overall experience on the brand new console and that's what Nintendo showed us today; a good selection of new features and games which we can expect to see over the coming months!

There was a huge set of games which are on the way, some of them we're going to just link to trailers, but some of them are worth a quick mention! Satoru Iwata actually took the time to apologise for the lack of releases so far this year, he claimed that his teams needed more time to perfect the gameplay, but perhaps they just had short time scales to work to.

All of the following titles will be available towards the end of March and onwards! You'll have  Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, LEGO City Undercover at the end of the March. After that will be the time we start getting excited: there's a new 3D Mario action game, Zelda games, a Wario game and a new Mario Kart game on the way!!! We'll be able to see a demo of most of those at E3 later in the year! There will also be some sort of party game too, one with all of the mini games, which will support both Wii remotes and the gamepad, so you can get everyone in on the action!

The games don't stop there, we'll be seeing a new game centred on Yoshi's antics, which will be the brain child of the guys who made Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Last up will be Shin Magami Tensei meets Fire Emblem. It'll be a game with fighting, but we don't know too much more than that at this moment in time.

The links to the adverts for the rest of the games are below:

Now when it comes to updates Nintendo is planning on releasing two; one in spring and one in summer. Both updates will boost the consoles speed and performance and hopefully this will help address the complaints of games loading slowly, which Nintendo have heard. The first update will also add new Virtual Console functionality. This will allow you to play GameBoy Advance titles and games from other old Nintendo consoles direct on your Wii U GamePad or on the TV.

Nintendo will offer people who already use Virtual Consoles on the Wii the opportunity to the Wii U will get a discount if they buy the same games again. The pricing models are shown below.

Last but not least the MiiVerse will be getting a new update which will add support for mobile devices, as well as verified accounts which will work in a similar way to verified profiles on Twitter. This verification won't be available for everyone, it will be a privilege for devs and the celebrities of this world. These exclusive accounts have the ability to link websites on their Miiverse posts and you have to chance to embed YouTube videos. Both of these will arrive with the first of the two updates we mentioned earlier.

The video embedded below will see a Nintendo employee talk you through the new features. It's 30 minutes long so it will take you a little while if you want to plough through it!

  • If you're a dev interested in working on games for the 'Gamestick', which has been on Kickstarter lately, then you now have to option of paying $250 for the console and getting the extra bonus of a six-month window of 100% revenue on any games you release before this July! Naturally you'll also get a Gamestick, but it won't arrive before everyone else who backed the device, which is a bit of a bummer!

  • Samsung has overtaken Apple to become the biggest consumer of semiconductors in the world, with a whopping 8% of the market, which given how many other companies there are is impressive! Apple was only .8% behind with 7.2% of the market share.

  • The Verge thinks that Nokia will offer a new device which is codenamed 'EOS' which will feature a camera sensor similar to that on Nokia's 808 PureView! It will reportedly pop up on a Windows Phone 8 device which will be one of Nokia's 2013 flagships! We'll have to wait and see!

  • The 4G spectrum auction is under way in the UK! Hopefully we will see some competitors to EE in the space very soon!

  • A UK shopping centre owner by the name of Land Securities has inked a new arrangement with Google to use their Product Search feature to find the best price for the items that consumers are after, free Wi-Fi will also be on offer in the shopping centres, both of these will hopefully allow shoppers to feel like they are getting the best deal! Land Security is hoping to create "an environment appropriate for multi-channel retailers", so we might be seeing more order online and pick up deals.

13/11/2012: Nexus 4 and 10 sell out in minutes! HTC Droid DNA for Verizon, Sinofsky quits Microsoft, Nokia launches their mapping brand 'Here' and much more!

Nexus 4 and 10 hit shelves today and they sell out in minutes!

Google's Nexus 4 and 10 went on sale today and across the world they sold out within minutes. Unfortunately, it seems that only a lucky few were able to order their devices, amid the numerous issues and errors Google's Play stores threw up under the pressure across the world. If you missed out today then we expect Google will have some more stock in soon; the the devices are now marked as 'Coming soon' in the UK, the USA and Australia.

IntoMobile said that the devices sold out within 50 minutes in the UK and within 24 in the USA! People have taken to Twitter to say it was even faster than that in Australia!

At the moment it's hard to know quite how well the device has sold; we're not sure if Google had limited stock or whether there was just huge demand. Hopefully Google will be able to get some more stock in soon and shed some light on issues we had today! Did you manage to get one or did you have errors when you tried to order? Let us know and we'll update the post with your experiences!

HTC and Verizon announce the Droid DNA! The 5" Full HD monster.

HTC and Verison have today announced the Droid DNA and this is certainly a powerhouse! Before we get into specs you should know that this is not a 'phablet' according to HTC and it will set you back $200 on a two-year contract!

Now for the important stuff, there's:

  • 5" 1080p S-LCD3 display (1920x1080, 440DPI)
  • 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage, no micro-SD slot.
  • Android 4.1 with Sense 4+
  • 8MP rear camera / 2.1MP ultra-wide angle front facing camera
  • 2020mAh battery (yikes)
  • Wireless charging

There's two things which make us slightly worried about the phone and they're the small 2020mAh battery, but hopefully HTC can make it last and the lack of expandable storage, especially given there's no SD slot! If you're interested in picking one of these up then you can get one from November 21st! You can find more information about it on Verizon's website here.

Steven Sinofsky quits Microsoft!

Steven Sinofsky, the President of Windows and one of the key orchestrators of Microsoft's new Windows 8 has announced his resignation from the company. At the moment we are unsure of the reasons for his departure and where he intends to work next.

Although, it was seem as though Sinofsky departed on good terms though with Ballmer saying that:

“I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company... The products and services we have delivered to the market in the past few months mark the launch of a new era at Microsoft. We’ve built an incredible foundation with new releases of Microsoft Office, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Microsoft Surface, Windows Server 2012 and ‘Halo 4,’ and great integration of services such as Bing, Skype and Xbox across all our products.

Sinofsky was also very complementary saying: "It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company."

Nokia launches 'Here', the company's new mapping brand set to debut on Firefox OS next year!

Nokia has launched their new mapping solution called 'Here'. The 'Here' brand will essentially be an umbrella name for all of Nokia's mapping and location solutions. Stephen Elop has said that with this announcement Nokia wants to offer "everyone with any type of device the ability to use this, the best location platform in the industry." He also believes that availability across platforms and the general "openness is what sets Here apart" from all the other mapping services.

The company even took to Twitter to show emphasise how committed they are to offering great location solutions:

It seems the first people to benefit from this will be those of you who pick up a device running Mozilla's upcoming Firefox OS. This is a deal which Nokia considers 'a strategic partnership with Mozilla to bring new location experiences to the Firefox OS. Nokia plans to debut a mobile Web version of HERE Maps for the new Firefox OS next year. The companies are working together to give people the best mapping experience on Firefox OS.' This would seem like a logical partnership given the HTML 5 standard Mozilla is using on their web-based platform and will give a solid alternative to Google Maps.

Nokia also demonstrated an Android OS-based reference application and there are currently plans for the availability of a HERE SDK for Android to arrive in early 2013. Nokia said this 'is aimed at enabling partners to create location-based applications for Android devices with Nokia's leading content.'

At the moment we're not entirely sure what this will mean for the naming of Nokia Maps, Pulse and Transit and personally we don't know if those names should be changed now that they are starting to develop a good reputation. If we hear more on naming schemes and how this will all tie in we'll let you know. In the mean time you can have a look at the online maps 'here'!

In other news:

  • Google has released Android 4.2 to the AOSP today. The only issue is that the Nexus 7 3G isn't yet supported by AOSP because of licensing issues, the Nexus 4 isn't yet functional with the release and there's no Android 4.2 support for the Nexus S or Motorola Xoom yet. But, on the plus side if you're a lucky owner of the "takju" variant Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 then you can find the factory images here.
    Via Android Central.
  • Samsung is reportedly considering updates to Android 4.2 for it's Galaxy range of handsets. ZDNet got a statement from Samsung which read, "We will announce rollout plans for Android 4.2 to our Galaxy portfolio of devices in due course." That seems as good as a confirmation to us!
  • Talking of Android updates HTC has released a Q&A website about Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates. The main things on there are the issues with updating phones with 512MB of RAM, that means One V and Desire C owners won't be getting an update. HTC does make a point though that they will continue to support those devices with security updates, patches and enhancements through their life cycle. We do find it slightly strange though that Samsung's Nexus S has the same amount of RAM and has no issue running the software. We'll have to take HTC's word for it!
    HTC Q&A Via Android Central.
  • AT&T is reported to have a big push to draw in Sprint's Nextel customers as they close down that service! AT&T have been promoting their push-to-talk phones which can use their LTE network, devices such as Samsung's Rugby Pro.

The company's senior vice president, Chris Hill, said in a statement:
“For workers in industries like construction, manufacturing and public safety, mobile devices that can withstand harsh conditions are essential... We’re offering AT&T Enhanced PTT on a variety of rugged devices to give our customers the performance and durability they need to get in touch quickly on the job — no matter what conditions they face.”
    Via AllThingsD.
And finally, Sprint have today announced a new budget phone with a great set of specs called the Sprint Flash. There's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 4.5-inch HD display, 12MP rear and 1MP front cameras, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of storage, a rather small 1,730mAh battery, NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 amongst other things! For $129 on contract we can think of worse ways to spend your money! But, you can pick it up for $99 at Wirefly!

30/10/2012: Matuas Duarte answers Nexus questions on Google+, BBC iPlayer is now officially on Sky+, Rovio teases Angry Birds Star Wars and more!

Matias Duarte answers some of the nagging questions the community had!

There was a couple of key complaints which Google has faced in the recent versions of Android and today Matias Duarte has stepped forward on Google+ to help explain Google's thinking!

The issues Matias tackled were SD card slots, or rather the lack of them on Google's Nexus devices and secondly the decision to drop the split navigation and notification bar which tablets with ICS or Honeycomb were blessed with.

Firstly, with regard to SD card slots and reluctantly we can actually see where he's coming from especially as Google is trying their best to work on usability for the average consumer, he said:
"Everybody likes the idea of having an SD card, but in reality it's just confusing for users. If you’re saving photos, videos or music, where does it go? Is it on your phone? Or on your card? Should there be a setting? Prompt everytime? What happens to the experience when you swap out the card? It’s just too complicated."
The second thing he brought up was the new navigation buttons which will grace the bottom of every tablet running Android 4.2, like Google and Samsung's new Nexus 10. The new navigation bar won't be split between notifications and navigation like the Motorola Xoom's was, instead the bar will be very much like the Nexus 7's and the status bar will be added to the top of the screen, so you'll have to pull down to see notifications!

"This new configuration is based on usability research we did on all of the different form factors and screen sizes that Android runs on. What mattered most of all was muscle memory - keeping the buttons where you expect them, no matter how you hold the device."
And just for your extra information, there's a good overview from The Verge which gives you a good amount of information about the creation of the new range of Nexus devices!

In other news:

  • Google's Android has caught up with Apple's iOffering in terms of apps; there's now 700,000 apps on the Play Store!
  • Microsoft have faced criticism on the performance of Office 2013 on their new Surface RT tablets. The company went on to say that the “issue is known,” and “an update is forthcoming.” Apparently, the best way to 'fix the problem' is to update to the latest versions of all software which you have! Other users have said that has made everything better! So stay up to date!
  • The 4th generation iPad has been benchmarked and this one is a lot more powerful and it's packing a 1.4 GHz A6X chipset with 1GB of RAM!

29/10/2012: Google release their Nexus family and Android 4.2, Windows Phone 8 launches and all the other news!

Google's Nexus event isn't being rescheduled: Everything gets released!

That event Google had planned for today was unfortunately cancelled by a somewhat inconveniently timed and potentially dangerous hurricane which goes by the name of Sandy. But, Google doesn't need a hurricane to stop them releasing their newest set of devices! And after much speculation we now have an three separate and new devices, each with great sets of specs and we think you'll find them very, very intriguing, especially when you see how much they're going to cost!

Before we start though, there's a new version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) available and all of the official details straight from Google can be found here! But now onto the devices!

The LG Nexus 4.

First up we have possibly the worst kept secret gadget ever! It's got everything that was rumoured too!

To start with there's a 4.7"1280 x 768 pixel screen, giving the device a ppi of about 320, which definitely pegs this in the realm of high end displays! For added protection this one will have Corning's Gorilla Glass 2, just to fend off those pesky keys!

Aside from the display you've got 2GB's of RAM, 1.3 and 8MP cameras, NFC, 8 or 16GB's of storage, a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor  and a 2100mAh battery which also powers your usual array of connections and features! In case you are wondering there is wireless charging for the phone too, but we don't currently have any official details of the 'charging orb' but it should be available pretty soon!

This phone will ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board as well! That's a great package in itself, but wouldn't it be even better if it was £239 for the 8GB model and £279 for the 16GB model? Well that's how much they are folks! If you can't wait to get your hands on it then you can pre-order it here!

Asus Nexus 7: New Variants!

Everyone in the tech world has grown to know and love Google and Asus' little 7" Nexus tablet. But, there's always been some things missing for reviewers and they're 3G connectivity for those weekends away and some extra internal storage!

Thankfully Google's been listening and has allayed both of those fears with the update Nexus 7's. There's still the Tegra 3 under the hood and everything else remains the same apart from now your storage options are 16GB and 32GB for the same price as the 8 and 16GB versions used to be. So that means your 16GB version is now down to £159 and you can get that here! The 32GB version is available for £199 just here! And finally, the 3G version will only come with 32GB of internal storage and that extra modem will cost you a little bit extra, bumping the cost up to the exceptionally reasonable £239 and you can pre-order one here!

The Nexus 7 has always been a great device, but with this price cut it's only got even better!

The Samsung Nexus 10.

It was definitely rumoured but up until the last few days we didn't have any conclusive proof. But, alas here we have it, the Samsung Nexus 10 with the world's highest resolution screen on a tablet!

Obviously, the screen is the highlight of this tablet; it's a 2560 x 1600 10" panel which works out to being about 300ppi! Lets take a minute to compare that to everything else on the market; Apple's 'retina display' has 264ppi and everything else is straggling behind, way down in the 150-190 range! And just for the record it's coated in Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 just to give it that extra scratch resistance!

Aside from the fabulous screen there's a dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 chip paired with 2GB of RAM. Our best guess is that it's a Samsung Exynos chip but noone can confirm that at the moment. On top of that there's a quad-core Mali T604 GPU a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. The battery is a very good 9,000mAh pack, which Google claims will be good enough to give you 9 hours of HD video playback. The whole thing weight in at 604 grams.

Just for good measure Google and Samsung will be throwing in dual, front-facing speakers for audio, microUSB and Micro HDMI ports and not one but two NFC chips, one on the front and one on the back! It's a very comprehensive set-up indeed!

Again this tablet will come in 16 and 32GB models but there's no 3G option, but we're not sure you'll need it because this one is pretty much designed to stay in the house! The 16GB model is up for pre-order here and the 32GB here!

Windows Phone 8: A very brief overview!

  • Windows Phone 8 will have 'live apps' on the lock screen; for example there's things like quick links to the Facebook app.
  • Skype for Windows Phone 8, which also launched today, will have an 'always on' feature!
  • Windows Phone 8 buyers will get a free one-year subscription to the music streaming service Pandora!

In other news:

  • Google themselves have released a hack which allows the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook to run Ubuntu!
  • Nook has finally brought their range of e-readers and tablets to the UK! The NOOK Simple Touch is available now, whilst the NOOK HD and HD+ tablets are available for pre-order!
  • Verizon and Nokia have teamed up to release a 4G LTE compatible version of the Lumia 820, it'll be called the Lumia 822 and it'll set you back $100!
And finally, Amazon has had a stab at Apple's iPad Mini, with the company comparing their Kindle Fire HD and Cupertino's newest tablet head to head on Amazon USA's homepage. A screenshot of the ad is just below!

Rumours of a new HTC phablet grow!

There have been rumours about HTC making a challenger to Samsung's self-invented 'phablet' market for quite a while now. But, everything had gone quite quiet on that front until the rumours were reignited today by a pair of tweets from @EVleaks and @Football4PDA.

Microsoft Surface really did put off OEM's?

There have been reports today that, in spite of the positive reactions of the press, Microsoft's surface really did put off their other OEM partners from continuing with their Windows 8 tablet plans.

One company this has had a significant effect on, is reported, to be HP. Given the obvious failings of the Hewlett Packard's Touchpad last year, it's quite understandable that they are cautious when it comes to tablets. Microsoft themselves supposedly commented that, “If Microsoft had seen compelling enough plans from [PC makers],” Moor Insights & Strategy’s Patrick Moor said, after talks with Windows RT OEMs, ”they wouldn’t have needed to do this". This clearly demonstrates the failings of the plans from HP and their competitors.

The story here focuses particularly on Windows RT because the reported $90 pricetag on that version of Windows 8 is off-putting for potential partners, this is something Microsoft themselves are exempt from because the Surface tablets are made in-house. This is said to be pushing other OEM's into the hands of the OpenSource (and free) Android Operating System.Although no other specific names are mentioned, sources apparently claim that “just about every OEM out there is scrapping one or more [Windows RT] designs, with most renewing Android efforts with every resource at their disposal."

Chrome for iOS already a top app!

Less than two days after the app launched onto iOS, Chrome for iPad and iPhone is already a hit! The reality is that the app is just a skin on top of Safari in iOS because of Apple's restrictions, but that doesn't stop it being awesome!

So far there have been well over 4,000 reviews of the app and 80% of posts have given the app the full 5 star rating, with the app currently averaging 4.5stars!

If you didn't hear the app was available then head to your app store and hit download on Chrome! It's free!
