iPhone 5 'teething problems'?

The latest iPhone has again been greeted with huge queues in London and Tokyo today, as well as having over 2 million people pre-order and have the device shipped to their homes today, but is all as rosey as it seems? Now the title might be slightly misleading here, but those of you who have got an iPhone 5 and or iOS6 on your device will have noticed a couple of issues.

The first of which will impact anyone with a device that will be running iOS6! You may have noticed that since the update you've lost Google Maps and it's been replace with Apple's own solution, aptly named, iOS Maps. Now, we know this is a new solution, but some of the things we've been hearing throughout the day have been nothing short of ridiculous. Lets start with Stratford-Upon-Avon, the town where Shakespeare was born, well that's not even in the maps at the moment.

To the right you can see for yourself how Apple's Maps see Colchester, in Essex.

But, there's an almost endless list of bloopers; for example Luton is apparently soon to become a popular tourist destination, having been relocated to the coast!

Someone on the London Underground is obviously a tech fan and put this little announcement up at Hackney Wick station. (Right).

Apple, in recent times have also been huge proponents of uniqueness and creating your own designs. But, it seems they are dismissing their own advise today after iOS6 featured one of the world's most famous clock faces, which appears to have been lifted almost straight from Switzerland. The clock itself is so important because it was originally designed by Hans Hilfiker and is described as an icon for the Swiss railway and Switzerland. The clock design is trademarked and copyrighted so Apple may well find themselves in some hot water for this slightly hippocritical blunder. The two designs are just below, in a nice side by side comparison and to quote Apple it does seem like this is a 'slavish copy' of the frequently licensed design?

The final issue only affects the iPhone 5 and it's not so much of an issue as a feature. Basically your new 8mp camera can only take 4mp stills in low-light conditions. The reason for this is because Apple has boosted low light performance, they've had to implement 'quad-pixel oversampling' to make the pictures clearer and just better. So it's a fair trade and many of you will be a lot happier with the new pictures than the old ones.

HTC, Motorola and the future!

Before I start it's worth offering up a little disclaimer. I live in the UK, our choice of phones is decidedly different from you guys over the pond in the USA. For starters we didn't get any of the Motorola Droid series, after the Droid 2 (read: Milestone 2), we only got the Razr Maxx available in big chain stores in the last 2 weeks and we get pretty much every HTC phone going!

So what's the point of this discussion? Well both companies are doing average-poor in their financial statements and there are clear reasons, in my mind, why each of them is struggling and bare in mind that these are just my opinions and for the record I have a Galaxy S3 and Sony Tablet S, so there's no vested interest!

Firstly, lets start with Motorola because they're easier to tackle! Firstly, the company in the last few years has failed to compete with the Samsung's and Apple's of this world and to an extent they are struggling at the moment. At the moment if you head over to their UK page you will find 14 phones for sale; the competitive of which is the Motorola Razr/Razr Maxx and yes both of these phones are nice, but given the choice would you buy one of them over a Galaxy S3? Probably not, you'd rather stump up the extra £5 a month!

Motorola almost totally missed the boat because when the Razr was announced in November 2011 Google was days away from showcasing the Galaxy Nexus, with it's 720p HD screen, which simply trumps the Razr's! The phone was almost outdated from the moment it launched.

Hopefully the freshly announced Razr M and it's 'bezel-less display' will help, although the Intel processor might well put off a few people. The Razr HD and Razr HD Maxx are once again good but they're very much the 4S to the iPhone 4, if you get that little analogy.

Thankfully the Razr got ICS, but only after Jelly Bean was announced!
My criticism doesn't stop there; Motorola also have an issue with updates; that issue is that they're terrible with them! If you're lucky you'll see one update on your phone. That simply isn't competitive any more; Samsung and HTC crank out updates for the vast majority of their phones quickly and they often get them through two versions of Android! Even Sony have learnt the wonders of software updates lately and they've been widely praised for their work, so hopefully Motorola will see the light!

Quite simply that's where Motorola's problem is; they're not challenging high-end phones and that's where Samsung and Apple are making their money. Hopefully Google have got Moto's teams working behind the scenes to create something amazing for the event on September the 5th because they'll have to compete with the Galaxy S3, the new iPhone, new Lumia devices, the stunning Samsung Ativ S and HTC's competent, if not mind blowing, One X and S. That's the competition and devices will have to wow consumers to turn their heads.

Motorola would also do well to actually offer their phones in Europe! We can help you guys shift some phones, but not if they're not on sale here! It might be a strategic move on Motorola's part to tackle the US and China, but it's slightly frustrating for us keyboard lovers!
The Sensation just looked dated.

HTC is a different beast entirely; people have said that things started going pear-shaped last year when they released too many Sensation devices. HTC had the Sensation, the Sensation XE and the Sensation XL, so I'm not entirely convinced that was the reason. Instead, I'd say that the Sensation series (with the exception of the XE) looked clunky and unfashionable. Yes, they were made of metal and felt good but they didn't look as good as an iPhone 4S or a Galaxy S2 did they?

That's the problem for HTC their aesthetic. The One Series was a good start, it looked relatively fresh and unique and HTC brought their A-game with the specs, even if they put a diddy little battery in the One X!

I think HTC knows that's the trouble too, but the company has a toss up between a complete departure from their current design language and the risk that runs of alienating their current device owners when they come to upgrade. HTC has also started focusing on battery sizes; they've been asking their Elevate users whether battery life is that important to them and whether perceived battery life is actually the reality, after all a little battery doesn't necessarily mean it won't last all day!

HTC aren't the company that concern me, they'll be fine they're trying to change and reassert themselves, but they need to get back to creating iconic devices; the Desire and the Legend were fantastic. Everyone instantly recognised them because they were so distinct and they caught people's eyes and that's what they need to get back to and maybe ditch sense too! It looks like a dodgy scarf in the Sensation above!!! Again in HTC's defence they've tried to refresh Sense in the One series and they've toned down the colour scheme and made it less intrusive!

So HTC and Motorola both are still competitive manufacturers and both have a place in Android's future. I'm confident both of them can offer compelling and competitive devices, sometimes though I just wish Google could make all Android phones and this is why...

Samsung's Exynos 5 Dual processor gets detailed!

This is the new processor from Samsung and you want this in your next device!!! The new chipset features a pair of Cortex-A15 cores for insane mobile power. The SoC is built on 32nm production techniques and this particular version rocks two 1.7GHz cores and has support for screen resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 WQXGA.

The screen resolution limit itself is quite interesting because there have been endless rumours that Samsung is preparing an 11.8-inch tablet with that specific resolution! The processor will be capable of 1080p 60fps hardware deceleration and 3D graphics. Don't worry about support either there's; USB 3.0, SATA3, OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenCL support, plus the ability to beam your content to wireless displays.

And best of all Samsung has managed to reduce power consumption. They've got energy usage down 30-percent when compared to 45nm chips. Included in that are specific power-saving routines for those energy-hungry displays in your latest gadget.

Unfortunately we haven't got any news what devices will be featuring this processor but it'll probably be next years range of phones and tablets!

In other news:

  • Acer has today reiterated their commitment to Windows 8 tablets but has pleaded that Microsoft make sure their Surface tablets have a higher price point so that Acer can target the lower price ranges. Essentially Acer knows how much people expect to pay for tablets and it doesn't want Microsoft to steal their traditional market!
  • Microsoft has had a bit of a naming crisis since 'Metro' was found to be taken by other companies. Instead of 'Windows 8 design' the software giant has told employees to call Windows 8's look 'modern UI design'. Perhaps that one won't stick!
  • HTC has just got around to updating their flagship smartphone the HTC One X to a newer version of Android.  The OTA update will be a version of Android 4.0.4 and will land on the international version of the HTC One X starting today. The update includes several new features and overall tweaks to the operating system. One key change is a large change to Sense; the remapping of the multitasking key.
  • Lenovo has reportedly signed a deal with Nvidia to make some Windows tablets with Nvidia Tegra 3 processors inside. Unsurprisingly the OS will be the RT version of Windows 8 but the big news is that the tablets will be in the same form as Asus' Transformer range!
  • There have been rumours today that RIM are a potential takeover target for IBM. We can definitely see some sense if this was to happen, both business minded companies and both still have a place. We'll let you know as soon as we hear any more!
  • Benchmarks have emerged of a new Sony phone codenamed LT25 “Tsubasa”, with sources speaking to the Xperia Blog suggesting that the smartphone will find a home on numerous carriers throughout the world. There's set to be both LTE and HSPA+ models of the phone available, with specs said to include a 720p screen, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and LTE connectivity but that's all the details we've got at the moment.

The UK's top 10 phones for May

Up until March the Galaxy S2 had dominated the sales chart for 11 consecutive months, but the impending release of the Galaxy S3, mean the phone was finally beaten out by the iPhone 4S, the white version of course. But, if we flick forward to May it seems Samsung has returned to glory.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, despite only being released late in the month managed to top the sales chart for May. Interestingly Samsung seems to totally dominate the sales in the UK, which isn't quite reflected elsewhere around the world.

Aside from the Samsung main stays such as the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Ace and the S2+3, HTC had a relatively strong showing with the One series coming in 4th, 8th and 9th, which interestingly are the One X, S and V respectively.

The main story here is that Samsung, and to a degree, the iPhone dominate the British market; there's no mention of Nokia, one mention of Sony, nothing from LG and perhaps most surprising there is not a single Blackberry in the list at all?! Which is bad news for RIM given how popular they are with the kids at the moment! Perhaps it has something to do with the sheer amount of models they offer.

Below is the full list, which was very interesting reading:
