Samsung's Galaxy Note II camera was downgraded by Sony.

Samsung reportedly planned to include a 13MP shooter in their Galaxy Note 2, but apparently their plans to include a sensor that good were scuppered by Sony's inability to produce enough sensors!

The story goes that Sony chose to offer the camera sensors to LG and their upcoming Optimus G instead, because they couldn't produce enough to satisfy Samsung's almost insatiable needs.

In other news:

  • Nokia has pledged to 'investigate' their work after they were caught faking the promo shots from their Lumia 920. Perhaps next time Nokia it'd be less hassle if you just use the phone to take a picture!
  • Apparently Apple will have a tough time disproving HTC's claims that Apple infringe on their 4G LTE patents according to a top American Judge!
  • Nokia's new Lumia 920 PureView will only record video audio in Mono!!!
  • And will Apple's new iPhone 5 support numerous types of 4G around the world?! That's the rumour.

And finally Everything Everywhere has a press conference tomorrow regarding their 4G LTE plans! See what the other blogs around and about have speculated that we'll see! All the info is here!

Samsung, Apple and Australia.

Firstly, Samsung have complained to the Australian Government about how Apple has been using a certain number of their patents in their on going legal battles. The Australian patent commissioner has therefore been charge with informing the court about what Samsung alleges is IP that was granted “ultra vires”, or beyond the powers of the commissioner, which would make it void.

   The patents in question are;

  • 2006330724 – Unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image (Granted April 1, 2010)
  • 2007283771 – Portable electronic device for photo management (Granted May 20, 2010)
  • 2008201540 – List scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display (Granted February 11, 2010)
  • 2009200366 – List scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch screen display (Granted July 23, 2009)
It should be noted though that this is 4 patents from potentially hundreds which will be disputed in the coming months, so this is quite negligible in reality.

The second piece of news is that Apple is set to be fined by Australia, the fines run to AU$2.25m ($2.2m) fine at the moment but the judge has asked for confidential iPad sales information and details of Apple's finances before he agrees to set that amount. The issue is going back to Apple misleading new iPad buyers over the tablet's 4G compatibility. Both Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission have agreed on the fine and given Apple's bank balance a couple of million here is nothing really, just another lawsuit.

In other news:

  • Nokia shares have shot up in Finland because of rumours of a takeover by Samsung. It's hard to see why Sammy would be even remotely interested in Nokia but that was the rumour and it certainly gave Nokia shares a little bump in the right direction.
  • Apple have had rumbling that their TV SDK will be available at WWDC! That's a sign of what's coming, apps on your tv, that certainly is one department the Apple tv needs to catch up.
  • Apple is also rumoured to be getting rid of the 17" Macbook Pro and indeed the rumours are that the 'Pro' bit will be dropped from their name in their next iteration.
  • Nokia apparently only moved 2.2million Lumia's over Christmas, the IDC had reported. But that's Lumia 800's and they haven't got around to the numbers for Lumia 900's which seemed to do considerably better on launch, especially in the US, so we'll wait and see until we hear news from them before we make any damning judgements.

Just an aside if you live in Europe the 'Euros' football tournament kicks off today. Good luck to Ukraine and Poland for a great tournament!

Samsung Galaxy S3 latest to be targeted by Apple's patent gun.

Yesterday, we reported that Apple had again tried to secure an injunction against HTC in the USA, for the whole of HTC's line-up. But, because Apple don't seem to like any sort of competition and this time the Galaxy S3 is focused squarely in Apple's sights.

But, this time Samsung aren't going to lay down and accept this hindrance, instead they're planning to “vigorously oppose” any of Apple’s attempts to block the Galaxy S III coming to the US, and they're still aiming to launch the devices on June 21st.

Samsung has pledged to “demonstrate to the court that the Galaxy S III is innovative and distinctive.” The two patents Apple has issues over are; firstly, the same patent that relates to the use of context menus that HTC's One Series was held at customs for. The other relates to “universal search technology” which is used in Siri, which Apple have accused Samsung of copying in its S-Voice application.

One does have to question how much longer Apple can keep doing this for without getting a backlash from consumers. They are to all intents and purposes trying to stop competition over menial details. I for one think they're being ridiculous now, it seems clear that Samsung are not copying them in any regard here and I think Apple should try to realise there is a line. Or alternatively they could actually release some competitive devices, because they're standing in the way of progress now.

O2 and Vodafone partner to plan for the future.

Two of the biggest players in the UK mobile market have announced today that they will be sharing infrastructure to mutually assist each other to speed up LTE rollout.

The pair plan to continue running independent spectrum and competing services, but they will start sharing maintenance duties for their shared hardware and  they wil decommission unnecessary base-station sites.

“Under the proposals, both companies will have access to a single grid of 18,500 masts representing an increase in sites of more than 40% for each operator” which should very much help if you are lacking signal from your provider in your area. “The joint venture will also be responsible for the building of new sites needed to extend coverage into rural and remote areas. There will be opportunities for the decommissioning of duplicate sites and, as a result, the two companies expect there will be a more than 10% overall reduction in the total number of sites, in the UK, used by the two operators" something which will save both companies money as well as increasing their customers signal, which can only be good for you!

Telefónica, which is O2 parent company, will having the job of looking after radio equipment and local connections in the East (including Northern Ireland and most of Scotland), Vodafone logically will take care of the duties in the West (including Wales). Each network will continue to work independently, this is just hardware sharing there is no merger here so this is not like T-Mobile/Oranges merger. Everything Everywhere (T-Mo+Orange) actually allow cross-network roaming so you can pick up the others signal, this will NOT happen with Vodafone and O2.

Vodafone and O2 expect this to give them 98% population coverage by an LTE network, by 2015, if these proposals get accepted by OFCOM. That is the carrot for OFCOM to approve the deal, so we'll have to wait and see what happens now. So with O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile having drawn up plans for 4G LTE, that only leaves Three all on their own.

In other news:

  • Angry Birds Space has hit 100million downloads!
  • RIM has discontinued the 16GB Playbook, arguing that the 32GB and 64GB models represent better value for money. Is this a money making ploy or is this a sign of a new model? Or maybe RIM is genuinely trying to help consumers make a good choice.
  • Facebook has announced carrier billing for their credits system.
  • LinkedIN and eHarmony have had huge password leaks in the last few days, so make sure you change your passwords if you have accounts there!

Samsung look to tweak Galaxy Note 10.1?

Image

The 10.1" Galaxy Note was a great looking little device, but it looks like Samsung feels it needs to up it's game, which is probably a good idea actually, I myself said they very distinctly average when they launched.

Today it has been rumoured that the tablet will be getting thinner as well as having an update to the processor, giving it a bump to the Galaxy S3's quad-core Exynos chip, instead of a mere dual-core processor. There's also rumoured to be a new S-Pen slot as well in a Galaxy Note-esque fashion.

As soon as we get an official word from Samsung I'll be sure to keep you in the loop.

Nvidia highlight 'Kai' again, wants to give you $199 quad-core tablets.

NVIDIA outlines Kai platform, hopes to make good on quad-core $199 tablet promise

The Asus Eee-pad MeMo could and maybe would be the most perfect Android tablet, with it's 7" form factor and an ultra powerful quad-core processor. Unfortunately though, we have seen little or nothing of this tablet since Asus suggested it'd come to the world soon.

However, Nvidia have again reiterated that they are committed to producing a quad-core tablet for less than $200 and with a little bit of 'scret sauce' from the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor while somehow managing to make it considerably cheaper. So hopefully we can see this become a reality in the very near future.
