Bluestacks tease the Gamepop as OUYA's console is delayed until June 25th.

Some of you guys out there might have heard of the company Bluestacks. They're probably best known for their efforts on giving Windows and Mac computers the ability to run Android apps in their emulator, which works really well. But, it seems that the guys are looking to diversify and the way they're hoping to do that is to tackle the OUYA and the GameStick head on with their new 'Gamepop' device.

The Gamepop is a little Android 4.2 Jelly Bean-based console which runs mobile games on your big screen! Throughout May BlueStacks are happy to offer you the device 'for free' when you drop $93.83 on a one-year subscription which basically buys you the console and access to all of the games. At the moment Bluestacks promise that there will be "over 500" games, but there aren't too many specifics at the moment.

The guys behind Fruit Ninja have already said that, "We've been a featured partner in App Player since early on and they've delivered on every promise in terms of distribution... GamePop is a great incremental channel for us." Developers will receive their cut of the 50% of the total subscriptions which are paid to Bluestacks.

The device which this will be going head-to-head with is the OUYA. We already know everything there is to know about the console, but the ship date for non-Kickstarter orders has been pushed back to June the 25th as the guys have updated the design of the controllers to alleviate some 'issues' and this deadline also allows them to put more devices on store shelves.

The Gamepop is an interesting take on this new mobile games on the TV craze and we'll see how this goes when everything is launched. In the mean time you can check out the video below which gives you a little more information or alternatively head over to Gamepop's website here if you're interested in pre-ordering the device.

GameStick update KickStarter backers: Release pushed to June.

The second big Android-based Kickstarter project after the OUYA was the Gamestick. The Gamestick minds have just released their latest update on how their project is going and unfortunately there's not great news for everyone.

PlayJam, Gamesticks owners have said that because they have had such a hugely positive response to their product:
"We now expect to complete mechanical tooling about 4 weeks later at the end of May. Then the units are assembled, tested and assuming there are no issues, packed prior to shipping to each territory. We expect to ship around the 10th June. The volumes are now too large for us to be able to afford to air-freight them, which was our plan, so now we are going to have to use sea freight to deliver them. That's going to take around 2 weeks. Then we have fulfillment in territory – which we estimate will take between 1 and 5 days depending on where you are located. This means we think the likely date of arrival of your hand crafted GameStick will be at the last week of June."

This means that the device will arrive just in time to compete head to head with the OUYA which will be available to the masses at the start of the same month!

Again the guys reiterated their deals with GameStop in the US and GAME here in the UK just to show that they are still working hard behind the scenes and given that these two have more than 5,000 stores between them, but they added: "We’ve now got 27 retailers around the world engaged and placing orders for our micro-console."

It's not great news for backers, but if delays mean that the product arrives much more complete and perfected then everyone will be happier!

OUYA's are up for pre-order at GAME in the UK!

OUYA has already had a huge $8.5 million Kickstarter campaign and they've announced that the console can be picked up in a tonne of brick and mortar stores around the United States, but today we have the first British company to announce that they'll be offering the device and that is GAME!

If you were unfortunate enough to not have been able to back the device through KickStarter then you can now pre-order it from GAME! The console won't be with you until June, but that's not too much of a wait now!

So how much is this going to cost you? Well, the console has been priced up at £99.99 and the extra controllers will set you back £39.99 each and we assume you get one in the box right off the bat!

GAME isn't down as an official stockist just yet so they might just be making sure that they get their hand in before everyone else starts offering pre-orders on this side of the pond too! Let us know what you think though. For that price would you be tempted to drop £100 on it? As always put your thoughts in the comments below!

OUYA's will be available from some big stores too!

Ahh, the OUYA! It feels like an eternity since we offered our money in the hope we would have an Android powered games console which would double as a home entertainment system and anything else we could hack on to it, way back in August of last year! As the judgement day in March draws ever nearer everything is starting to fall into place and, dare we say it, OUYA is starting to look like a genuinely competent and forward-thinking company!

This morning backers received an email saying that after KickStarter pre-orders have been fulfilled people will be able to pick up OUYA's from a few big stores. Normal customers will be able to buy the consoles and controllers from Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy and Target!

At then moment we're not sure whether those places will only have on-line availability or whether you'll be able to pick one up in a brick and mortar store. Either way, if you're genuinely keen you can pre-order an OUYA now from either Target or Best Buy and it'll cost you $99 for the system and one controller and then $49 for each additional controller! Only problem with that these pre-orders won't turn up until June, whereas KickStarter backers will get there's in March.

If you aren't a backer then you can see the update which, as always, is also posted on the KickStarter page here!

3D OUYA rumours and if you've pre-ordered an OUYA? Here's a glimpse of what to expect!

It seems like an age ago that we pledged our money to the OUYA cause in August of last year! So without any OUYA's in consumers hands it seems the company is planning for the future, as Pocketlint have today reported that there is a 3D-compatible version of the OUYA in development, which will bring stereoscopic gaming to those who want it!

But, what most of you will want to see is what the devs have been up to since they received their consoles last week! Here we are folks there's a whole bunch of previews! (Yeah we know it's not as good as the real thing!) One member over on Reddit has decided to create a post where the community could gather together all the videos of OUYA gameplay so we can have a sneaky peek at what we will have in our hands in a couple of months time and we must say we're mighty impressed with what we've seen, especially as some of these aren't even official ports!

At the moment we have these videos, of varying length, to peruse:

The Secret of Universe Alpha - 6:18
Zombie Dash & Banzai Blowfish - 2:07 (Separate apps, same video)
Sonic 4: Episode II - 3:06 (unofficial)
Roasty Rooster - 3:01
Onlive - 3:42
Mupen64Plus - Super Mario 64 (Emulator) - 10:03
SuperGNES - Street Fighter II (Emulator) - 0:52
Deadly Dungeons - 17:16 (unofficial)
Super Daddio 2 - 3:28
Splat - 0:41
Legacy of Barubash - 2:01
Where's My Water? - 4:37 (unofficial)
Tiny Hawk - 2:12
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - 4:10 (unofficial)
Striker Soccer Euro 2012 - 0:31

Just in case any more are added to the list after we post this then you can find the full list here! And if you haven't ordered your OUYA and you want to receive it, probably some time in April, then you can either wait until the devices are on general sale and order from Amazon in the USA or you can pre-order direct from OUYA no matter where you are, although you do have to add an extra $20 for shipping if you're outside the US!

OnLive CEO stays on amid cuts!

Last week half of OnLive’s workforce was laid off, the company began a huge restructuring programme because they were haemorrhaging money. The changes meant that HTC lost its $40 million investment. When things like this happen and everything looks so dire everyone and their mum would expect to see the CEO and the execs move on to be replaced with people with new ideas and a fresh plan for success. So it won't be just us who're very surprised that OnLive is keeping their current CEO, Steve Perlman.

An official statement was issued by OnLive this week which offered up a few more details on what’s actually happening within the company and what fans can expect to be seeing from the company. OnLive said in the statement that it has a new investor and assured subscribers that all their purchases, achievements, videos, and other content were still there and would not be interrupted. The company says it plans to continue operating its service 24/7 just as it always has.

Perlman has been charged with working through this major transition. Once the company transition is complete, OnLive said that Pearlman would focus on the company’s next product releases and promised more major announcements in the near future. Those announcements will include the Vizio CoStar and the Ouya console! Stay tuned for more announcements as they happen!

South Korean judgement on Apple Vs. Samsung.

So these two have been at each others throat for soooo long it's starting to get boring but now the results are finally starting to come in.

The first result has come out of South Korea, Samsung's home turf, so is this ruling slightly favourable? Not entirely no. The court decided that Apple had infringed on two Samsung patents, but Samsung had returned the favor on Apple's "bounceback" design patent, but they apparently didn't copy Apple's icon design resulting in damages of about $22,000 heading Apple's way and $35,000 going the other way. That's according to WSJ's Evan Ramstad, who also reports that other than the light financial slap on the wrist, the ruling means that the infringing products can no longer be sold in South Korea. The list of affected hardware includes mostly previous gen products like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, as well as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus.

The USA might rule slightly more in Apple's favour but, we'll find out later next week!

In other news:
  • HTC's rumoured 'Proto' device has had some more leaks today. The device is widely expected to replace the HTC One V when it launches soon!
  • Tim Cook has been CEO of Apple for a year!
  • There is a planned Xbox 360 hub for the upcoming US election campaign!

And finally for those of you who thinks Apple needs to commit a 4G chip to their upcoming iPhone then it would seem consumers don't really see the need at the moment. All the good stats from the research are below!

Sony's rumoured Xperia tablet leaks again!

Sony's Tablet S was a relatively successful product for the company, they manage to shift a few and it seems this has spurred them on to create a successor.
This time Sony has kept the 'folded over' side from the tablets predecessor, but with a slimmed down chassis, so that it’s less of a taper and more consistent. Interestingly, if these renders are accurate, the tablet appears to borrow the “cosmic flow” wallpaper from the Xperia smartphones something that suggests Sony is trying to better integrate their smartphone and tablet arms.

And the vital specifications are expected to run something like this; Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 9.4" 1280 x 800 pixel screen, up to 64GB of storage, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and 3G, along with GPS, an SD card slot and an 8-megapixel camera. A front-facing 1-megapixel camera, 10hr battery and the usual roster of sensors. It's been reported that Sony will offer various accessories including an HDMI dongle, multimedia dock and a QWERTY keyboard case. This could be one tablet to be reckoned with!

In other news:

  • Facebook has asked users to forward them phishing emails that claim to be from the big internet companies like paypal, ebay and facebook themselves. So if you want to help out check your spam folder and send the email to phish@fb.com and hopefully we'll all be safer!
  • Vringo, a technology company that develops and licenses mobile patents, has today announced that it will be acquiring 500 patents from Nokia for around $22 million. Some patents relate to 2G, 3G and 4G mobile standards so this one could get interesting.
  • As well as this, Nokia has today announced they will be selling off their app development programme Qt. Some may rue Nokia's abandonment, Digia, the new buyers has big plans for Qt, including enabling it on Android, iOS and Windows 8 platforms.

HTC Endeavour C2 set to be a HTC One X refresh.
Last week we got wind that an improved version of the HTC One X was going to land on T-Mobile USA. The rumored device is expect to have a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chip and the new device will get a software bump to Jelly Bean. Stuff.tv has apparently confirmed that HTC is planning something and the new phone will be more akin to the HTC One X and it's got the codename “Endeavour C2.” This is interesting because the HTC One X started with the Endeavour codename, so we're only expecting a minor refresh.

The new, improved version will likely retain its NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset, but it will be clocked slightly higher, somewhere near 1.7Ghz. The battery has already been targeted as an area for improvement. Hopefully there will be a battery capacity increase and a new set of colour options for the fashion conscious.

Interestingly, the tip says that Beats headphones will be bundled with the device, despite HTC trying to stop that trend. Stuff also reported that all current HTC accessories will continue to work without any trouble with the new model, so this won't be a radical departure from the current line up. Meanwhile, HTC will add ClearVoice to “improve call quality”, which sounds similar to HD Voice offered on certain carriers’ handsets.

The last change will be HTC Watch 2; it's an improved version of the company’s video streaming service and will be bundled with the new handset. Pricing hasn’t been finalized, but Stuff believes UK carriers will offer the refreshed model on tariffs £5 more expensive than the current HTC One X. The handset is expected to be released around October 1st, just in time to square off with the Galaxy Note II and the next iPhone.

In other news:

  • T-Mobile UK has today confirmed that people who sign up to the Full Monty plan from now on will NOT be able to tether on their plan. Thankfully people already on the plan can continue to tether!
  • OUYA adds Namco Bandai, Plex, and four controller support to their fledgling console. Don't forget you have until midnight tonight to pledge your support if you want to get one of the first batch of OUYA's!!!
  • Samsung will reportedly make use of a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel in the Galaxy Note II, but the panel will be a new unbreakable plane display. This will allow the South Korean manufacturer to reduce the thickness of the phone and better guarantee longevity, possibly leaving room for a larger battery.
  • Android and iOS are now on 85% of smartphones that ship. We expect the rest is Blackberries and a couple of Windows Phone devices too!
  • MetroPCS in the USA is the first company to introduce voice over LTE.
  • Apple has decided to freeze their password resets over the phone after the revelations from the Wired  that showed how easy it was for hackers to access Amazon and Apple accounts without much effort.
  • Crytek has confirmed that Timesplitters 4 will be delayed for a while because fan interest 'isn't high enough yet', but don't despair because it will arrive at some point!
  • Microsoft Surface 2's  might just have been revealed in job listings. It seems the company is wasting no time in getting the ball rolling on the next iteration of Surface devices. A dozen Microsoft job ads have been discovered by TechRadar and all relate to future versions of the tablets. Microsoft, for its part, maintains that the only Surface devices are the two tablets that have been announced, but that doesn't mean it hasn't started planning for the future.
  • iOS 6's latest beta appears to confirm that the next iPhone will have a 640 x 1136 screen resolution. The clever guys over at 9-5Mac have dug around and found the resolution renders perfectly and everything is starting to fall into place.

Samsung strikes back at Apple by offering some 2006 prototypes.

Now this patent battle has had no small amount of twists and turns! But, yesterday Apple demanding $2.5billion dollars for Samsung's 'infringement'. Samsung struck back with vigour today saying that Apple “could not have sold a single iPhone without the benefit of Samsung‘s patented technology.”

Samsung has pointed to more than two decades of cellphone research, the WSJ reports, and accuses Apple of hypocrisy and more controversially copying design concepts from Sony. Samsung also offered up a bunch of new evidence from 2006, dismissing any suggestions that the original iPhone marked a departure from Sammy's old design approach.

The company has said “Apple seeks to exclude Samsung from the market, based on its complaints that Samsung has used the very same public domain design concepts that Apple borrowed from other competitors, including Sony, to develop the iPhone” Samsung’s filing argues. In fact, the company insists, Apple itself originally made clear that it had taken its iPhone inspiration – in part at least – from ideas out of Sony’s labs:

“Apple‘s own internal documents show this. In February 2006, before the claimed iPhone design was conceived of, Apple executive Tony Fadell circulated a news article that contained an interview of a Sony designer to Steve Jobs, Jonathan Ive and others. In the article, the Sony designer discussed Sony portable electronic device designs that lacked “excessive ornamentation” such as buttons, fit in the hand, were “square with a screen” and had “corners [which] have been rounded out.””

Unsurprisingly Samsung has something to say about Apple's image they released via AllThingsD, (below). “Prior to the iPhone’s announcement  in January 2007, Samsung was already developing numerous products and models with the same design features that Apple now claims were copied from the iPhone”

“In the summer of 2006, Samsung began designing its next generation of mobile phones, based on the market trend of ever-increasing screen size” Samsung continues. “At that time, Samsung‘s designers envisioned a basic design: a simple, rounded rectangular body dominated by a display screen with a single physical button on the face … [as] documents confirm, Samsung independently developed the allegedly copied  design features months before Apple had even announced the iPhone. It did not switch its design direction because of the iPhone.”

Samsung offered up the image below which shows a bunch of 2006 concept devices it had planned, one of which went on to be the Samsung F700 and the subject of a Korean design registration application in December 2006:

Even more interesting, Samsung says it was working on a grid-icon GUI back in the summer and fall of 2006. Sammy said; “Contrary to Apple‘s cherry-picked “pre” and “post” iPhone choices of Samsung‘s phones, Samsung designed and developed large screen smartphones before the iPhone as well as bar type phones, sliders, and folder phones”.

Unusually, Samsung also makes reference to the tricky balance between being a key Apple component supplier and being a rival in the smartphone marketplace. “Apple relied heavily on Samsung’s technology to enter the telecommunications space” it points out. “Samsung supplies the flash memory, main memory, and application processor for the iPhone.” However, it also reiterates earlier complaints that Apple infringes on Samsung patented technology:

“Apple also uses patented Samsung technology that it has not paid for. This includes standards-essential technology required for Apple‘s products to interact with products from other manufacturers, and several device features that Samsung developed for use in its products”

Samsung isn’t impressed either by Apple’s suggestions that it tried to engage in patent licensing – “despite the fact that virtually every other major industry participant was willing to take a license from Samsung for use of the standards-essential patents in this suit, Apple claimed that Samsung‘s patents are unenforceable” – or the patents the Cupertino company holds and is alleging that Samsung infringes. Far from being the innovative and distinctive interface technology that makes the iPhone and iPad so appealing, Samsung argues that Apple merely snatched up existing systems and then hurriedly patented them:

“Apple‘s utility patents relate to ancillary features that allow users to perform trivial touch screen functions, even though these technologies were developed and in widespread use well before Apple entered the mobile device market in 2007. Samsung does not infringe any of Apple‘s patents and has located dead-on prior art that invalidates them” Samsung

“Samsung does not need or want to copy” the company says indignantly. The full court filing is below.

Great response Sammy, we expect that will sway some opinions! Maybe not in the States though!
