Three things from CES 2013 for you to use around the home!

We were just trawling through our posts from CES and we noticed one which we had completely forgot about! But, here it is a couple of weeks too late, but nonetheless here is an eclectic mix of household gadgets and pieces of tech!

Belkin to bring WeMo to Android this year and add cool light switch feature!

For those of you who haven't heard of WeMo before, we hadn't until we wrote this, WeMo is essentially Belkin's brand of electronic components. It's a range which currently includes a "switch" compatible with anything you could plug into a normal outlet, a baby monitor, and a motion sensor. The premise of this range is that you can manage your electronics no matter where you are using your phone or tablet!

From the off WeMo was only compatible with iOS devices but from anywhere using their mobile device. Until now, however, WeMo has only been compatible with iOS devices. Soon though there will be a beta for Android and you'll be able to control your light switches straight for your device, which is a lot cooler than it sounds believe us!

CES wouldn't be complete without... An Android powered oven!

CES wouldn't be complete without a few strange items that we didn't expect to see and the first one of those which caught our attention was the Dacor IQ, which to all intents and purposes is an Android powered  oven.

The whole thing comes with a 7" 480x800p control panel which runs Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by a Samsung S5PV210 1GHz processor! Aside from that you also get 512MB of RAM, 16GB storage which is expandable to 32GB(!!!) and Wi-Fi connectivity!

So it's the question we're all contemplating... How much does an Android powered oven cost? Well firstly you'll have to wait until summer to get one and when you can it'll cost you  $4499 for a 30" single wall oven, or $7499 for the full, double wall oven. You can find more details on Dacor's site here!

Thought the cooker was weird? How about an Android powered Rice Cooker?

So what more could you want to go with your Android powered ovens than an Android powered Rice Cooker!!!

We're not really sure what to say about this because it's quite hard to tell that it's powered by Android, but it just goes to show how diverse an open source platform can be when it's really embraced! We think the premise is that you can control it with your phone too, which we don't see the point in unless you can control it from outside the house?
Anyway here's the source link if you can push through the business talk to get to the crux of the matter!

Innovations from CES 2013: The future of notifications?

In the flood of devices, some good, some bad and some incredibly bizarre but kind of cool, there were a couple of things which we thought really stood out from the crowd. Unsurprisingly, both of these are somewhat futuristic and we're not really sure which one we think will be the future. But, we have no doubt that the first of these will be showing up on a smartphone near you at some point in the next couple of years and this is....

The flexible OLED screens from Samsung!
One of the things which got us most excited was Samsung's demonstration of their flexible screens, which we have been promised for so long. It certainly looks like the wait will be well worth it if Samsung's CES demo is anything to go by!

If you have a quick look at the video above then this next little bit will make more sense!

One of our favourite things from the video above was the idea of the wrap around notification area! If we could get our way with that bit of tech we would extend its uses far past simple notifications! For example we would see that that area was able to control music playback and perhaps we could even squeeze a little keypad in sideways, for a quick call home or even a little Google Now button for when you're driving!

The other obvious plus here is that these screens will be a lot more durable than the current crop of screens! This is a massive plus and with a bit of luck it will mean that it'll be considerably harder to wreck your phone when the next generation drops!

We'd love to hear what you're thinking the area could be used for! So let us know in the comments below!

The Yotaphone!

We've actually heard about Russia's Yotaphone before. It's a device which offers you two screens. The front screen is a normal screen you would expect to see on your smartphone, but the back isn't what we would call conventional.

Instead of metal or some sort of plastic, what we actually have is an e-ink display! The main use of this is meant to:
"Lets users watch videos, play games and perform other functions best suited on the LCD, but adds an electronic paper display for content that requires longer reading time, like reading a book or magazine. It also keeps important information visible without draining the battery. Boarding passes, maps, tickets and other important information are displayed even if the battery dies."
Another interesting idea is that the screen can be used as a notification area when your phone is face down on your desk! The rear screen can essentially be your personal organiser, while the phone will only need to be turned on for the functions that can't be accessed from the e-ink display!

We're not sure which one of these will become the standard but we have a feeling that Samsung's idea will undoubtedly become widely implemented, whereas it would've been nice to see Yota's idea in the Nexus 4 or similar glass backed devices!

You can see a demo of the YotaPhone from AndroidPolice embedded below!

The full press release for the YotaPhone is available here!

So which would you like to have in your hands if you could have one right now for free? We know which one we're looking forward to the most!

Bits and Bobs from Day 3 at CES: ZTE to launch a Firefox OS powered device this year in Europe! Kogan show off a super cheap 5" smartphone! And one of Apple's guys pops up for the cameras!

ZTE set to offer a Firefox OS device in Europe!

In an interview with Bloomberg today ZTE's CEO, Cheng Lixin, say that his company was planning to offer a device running Mozilla's HTML5 based operating system, Firefox OS, within the year!

It's reported that ZTE is teaming up with an unspecified European wireless carrier to introduce the device. The potential candidates at the moment are Deutsch Telecom (parent company of T-Mobile) and Telefonica (O2's master) because they are key supporters of Mozilla's Firefox OS project.

Cheng also said that they are considering branching out into the US, probably depending on how well this upcoming phone sells and what else is brought to the table this year. He said, “We closely monitor the ecosystem and how it evolves... If that is ready and if consumer studies support that data, then we may launch one in U.S. also this year.” A US launch would probably be supported by Sprint, who are also carrier partners of Firefox OS!

On thing to mention is that Engadget had a little hands on with a phone earlier in the week that was running Firefox OS! The device and picture from Engadget are embedded to the above and to the right. We're very surprised that no one has noticed that this looks surprisingly like ZTE's design language! But, that is not to say that this is going to be released, but it could very well be a test device manufactured by ZTE!

For example it looks very similar to the ZTE N910 crossed with the ZTE Kis! Both of those phones are pictured below! Try to merge them both in your head and you'll see what we're on about! Take the speaker grill from the N910, the capacitive buttons, the white frame and even the microphone hole on the bottom left side!

What do you think? Are we onto something here?

Bloomberg Via PhoneArena and Engadget.

Kogan go after the phablet buyers with an unbelievably cheap offering!

Sometimes manufacturers drop something that makes you say wow. Sometimes it's because it's bad, sometimes because it's good, sometimes it's because it's spectacularly good value! This device, the Kogan Agora, is the latter of those options.

The Agora 5.0 is a phablet, well it's the same size as the new Xperia Z and the Droid DNA, but it's got a dual-core Cortex A9 processor, 4GB of internal memory and a Micro-SD card slot which can take cards up to 32GB, 512MB of RAM and a 2,000 mAh battery which promises nearly 5 hours of talk time. If you're wondering about the screen, that's a 5" WVGA (480 x 800) LCD panel, which is capacitive and you get a pair of cameras, the front one is 0.3MP and the rear-facer is a 5MP unit. The whole device runs Android 4.0.4 ICS, which is not all that bad really!

But, that's not really the story here. The real treat is the price. How much would you expect a dual-sim phone with those specs to cost? £250? £200? £150? No. In fact this thing will set you back £119! That's the same price as a Galaxy Y Pro from Expansys

If you're interested then you can pre-order the device here! It might not be your primary phone but it would be a good back up or a good device for taking on holiday with you! It's also worth bearing in mind that there is a limit of 3 devices per customer, we're not sure why at the moment, but if we find out then we will be sure to let you know!

ZTE announce the Grand S!

Like many of the other phones which we have seen announced this week ZTE have brought along a new Android device with a quad-core processor, a 5″ display 1080p screen! Despite the similarities it's hard to deny that this one is a looker!

ZTE's new Grand S has everything you'd expect of a flagship 2013 device: there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro running at 1.7GHz, a 13 mega-pixel rear and 2MP front-facing camera, the 2GB of RAM should keep this chugging along nicely, 16GB of internal storage, MicroSD card slot and there's LTE compatibility too! Android Jelly Bean will be powering the show along with some 'expert hardware and software safety protection' which will help manage power usage and help keep your information safe, ZTE didn't specify what that was though.

Not that that really matters because the real talking point is that they managed to cram all of that hardware into a frame which is 6.9mm thick! That skinniness will go some way to explaining why the battery is a tad disappointing, coming in at 1780mAh.

The device will arrive in China for 'online purchases' in Q1 this year. We're not sure whether this device will make it to the rest of the world yet. The press release for this device is available at the bottom of this post!

And finally, Apple might not be at CES to give us a presentation, but that hasn't stopped some of their employees going along and having a look around! Apple's Craig Keithley has been spotted and snapped on the CES floor by 9-to-5 Mac. Here he is pictured below!

The full press release for the ZTE Grand S is embedded below, otherwise you can find it here:

Archos already has a fair few tablets in their stables, but that's not deterring them from offering a couple more and why should it?!

Pictured above are the four new tablets in the Titanium range and these have quite a fair bit in common with each other. They each have capacity IPS displays, Dual-core 1.6GHz processors with quad-core graphics, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and they're all nicely wrapped in very nice aluminium cases!

We're not sure of exact details on screen resolutions for the tablets except for the 97 Titanium HD, which comes packing a retina equalling screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536! CES 2013: The Pebble Smartwatch gets demoed!

It's been a fair few months since the Pebble Smartwatch popped up on Kickstarter and subsequently smashed through their $100,000 target to reach over $10 million in funding. Since then it wasn't all plain sailing, in fact there's been a couple of hiccups and a couple of pleasant changes for their 68,000 Kickstarter backers!

Now though none of that matters as Pebble took to the stage at CES today and showed of the smartwatch everyone has been waiting for! The Pebble watch definitely doesn't look as clunky as the Sony Ericsson LiveView and fingers crossed that this won't have the same issues that device did keeping a connection either! The Pebble promises to sync effortlessly with your Android or iOS smartphone and it can offer you things like Facebook updates, text, Google+ and iMessages, music controls, and most importantly you can see the time.

Just in case you needed a refresh, because the Kickstarter was way back in May 2012, the device packs a 1.26-inch backlit e-paper display which has a resolution of 144 x 168 pixels. There's also Bluetooth 4.0 radio, a vibration motor, an accelerometer and a compass. The device should be quite durable too because it's water resistant, so you won't worry about getting it wet when you wash your hands! If you're wondering how it can charge easily and be waterproof, well there's a cool little custom cable which enables that

The smartwatch is currently being produced in quantities of 15,000 a week, so Pebble will have all 85,000 pre-orders ready pretty soon! But, once you get your device that's not the end of the support. The company has pledge to update the device on a 2 to 3 week basis after its launch to give the device all the functionality that backers were promised when they pledged their Kickstarter money!

Now that's all well and good assuming your phone can power the Bluetooth connection well enough. Pebble says that you shouldn't worry too much because in their experience it will only use somewhere between 5 and 10% of your phones battery. That sounds like a sacrifice worth making to us!

Kickstarter backers you will receive your lovely new device on or after January the 23rd! So not too long to wait!

If you missed the show then you can catch up on the demo here! We know the video goes a strange colour at one point, hopefully that'll be fixed soon!

CES 2013: T-Mobile announce MLB partnership, 4G plans, '4G connect' and HD voice! Plus Legere's take on their rivals!

T-Mobile took centre stage at CES today and they had four main points which they wanted to make from their pitch today. The first was a partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB), they also confirmed that an Unlimited Nationwide 4G plan is on the way without a fixed term(!), as is HD voice and a bunch of 4G 'things'.

First up is T-Mobile's deal with the MLB. This agreement will make T-Mobile the "Official Wireless Sponsor of the Major League Baseball association". This deal will last for a few years and will involve the MLB Advanced Media company working with T-Mo to provide the On-Field Communication System, which will connect via T-Mobile's new 4G network, so that'll give you a little heads up as to which areas will be getting 4G first! This system will provide communication from managers to the dugouts, from dugouts to bullpens and a few other important connections! This will be rolled out during the next year!

Secondly, we've heard rumblings of an unlimited 4G plan from T-Mobile for a while. But, now we finally have a confirmation that this will be a non-contract option, so there won't be a 24 month commitment and for $70 a month you will be getting yourself unlimited data, voice calls and texts, and the first 5GBs of your data usage will be at 4G speeds, we're not currently sure what'll happen after that, but we expect you'll get throttled! You can see the full details from T-Mobile's mouth here! If you're worried you won't be able to realise a 4G connection in your area then T-Mobile has pledged to cover 100 million people by the middle of this year and they hope to reach 200 million before the year is out!

Other then that tariff T-Mobile has another trick for their 4G network and it involves your laptop and tablet. 4G Connect from T-Mobile will offer instantly-available connectivity to the T-Mo's 4G network assuming you have specific Dell and HP laptop models which have Qualcomm built signal receivers in. Depending on which computer you have you can get a complementary data allowance of up to 200MB free every month!

T-Mobile is also keen to offer the residents of the US something which they've been rolling out over in Europe as well and that's HD Voice. T-Mobile said some of you will notice an increase in call quality as the company is rolling out this feature to the whole of their network, something which will give you a “dramatic improvement” in quality, T-Mobile isn't just saying that either, you genuinely can tell the difference! Unfortunately this will only be an option for those of you rocking 4G smartphones though!

John Legere.
One thing which wasn't mentioned during their keynote was the arrival of iPhones on the network. But, thankfully John Legere, although declining to offer many details, did say that T-Mobile USA would be getting the iPhone sooner rather than later in an interview with Reuters. He pegged the time frame at "three to four months as opposed to six to nine months," which is great news!

The whole thing was beautifully rounded off afterwards when, Legere started criticising his rivals. He said Verizon's shared data plans were a thing of the past, his exact words were, "a 10GB, 5-device shared data plan, when Joe Schmoe Junior starts to watch porn on his phone, isn't going to work," a valid point, very well made. He then mocked Sprint's WiMax to LTE switch and basically their 4G woes, before calling AT&T's network in New York 'crap'. This is definitely one way to get people's attention focused on T-Mobile and it seems fitting to round this one out the way Engadget start there posts: CEO-No he didn't!

Bits and bobs from Day 2 at CES: Samsung's new 8-Core mobile processor! Huawei's new processors, Chameleon Launcher for phones and Pokemon X and Y!

Samsung show off an 8-core mobile processor!

Well, well, well what on earth do we have here?! It seems Samsung really is hard at work on ARM's big.LITTLE processor design as they brought a mobile processor with eight, yes 8, cores along to CES! Samsung CEO Stephen Woo was the man to show off the new processor on stage today and it is really quite the competitor to Qualcomm's new Snapdragons and Nvidia's new Tegra processor!

The processor is Samsung's new  Exynos 5 Octa and essentially it's two banks of quad-core processors stuck together. The idea is that one set of the quad-core processor, the ARM Cortex-A15 set will do the heavy lifting for the device, it's then left to the more energy efficiency Cortex-A7 set to do the lighter work and the theory is that the software can switch seamlessly between the two conjoined processors.ARM thinks that big.LITTLE can extend battery life by up to 70%.

Samsung were keen to show off the processors ability to do several things at once, while also keeping the battery usage light. He showed this off in one demo by trying to find the best place to eat dinner. The tablet he was using pulled up a variety of locations from Urbanspoon, Google Maps and programmes like that, the device was able to do that from a number of places with no problems. The other plus of this is HD video will play with no dropped frames or stutters.

We're not really sure when this processor will be in phones and tablets, but don't expect to see it in the next Galaxy S device and it probably won't even find its way into the Galaxy Note either, because it is very much still a work in progress!

Nintendo announce Pokemon X and Y coming in 3D!

Nintendo and the Pokémon Company have just announced Pokémon X and Y to the world! These games will be available globally in October and will be available for the Nintendo 3DS!

Nintendo promised a new storyline, new dynamic battles, and an “entirely new dimension”, which is simply just 3D. The game will be available worldwide at exactly the same time, not staggered releases! Pokemon's CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara, said this will allow "fans across the globe can discover the secrets of Pokémon games and can collect, battle, and trade with each other immediately.”

If you can't wait to get your hands on it then you can have a cheeky little peak at some of the content over at Pokemon.com, or have little peak at the YouTube video embedded below! You'll get a taste for the new starter Pokemon in the video as well as a glimpse of the new Legendary Pokemon!

Chameleon Launcher for phones is shown off!

Chameleon Launcher is perhaps famous both for their Kickstarter origins and secondly for their funky widget-based UI! The widgets look great on tablets, but now the company plans to bring a similar experience to your phone!

Chameleon's developers, Teknision, have pushed out a video which offers a demonstration off their launcher running on the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Nexus 4. There's also some interesting stuff about folders as you approach the two-minute mark! The new launcher for phones will also feature a scrollable app tray and the same folder and widget implementation that Chameleon Launcher is famous for.

The launcher is currently still very early in its development and is in an Alpha state. Nonetheless the developers are plotting a public beta very soon so keep your eyes peeled!

Huawei announce that they're working on a Tegra 4 competitor!

At the moment we know that Huawei are quite dedicated to working on their home built processors, the company was confident enough to put them in their latest crop of smartphones! But, with dedicated processor managers like Qualcomm and Nvidia cranking out their new Snapdragons and Tegras at CES, Huawei need to bring something more to the table.

So later in the year Huawei will have the HiSilicon K3V3 chipset ready, which is a successor the the current quad-core K3V2. Just like Nvidia's Tegra 4 offering this processor will be based on the more powerful Cortex-A15 architecture, which will give you a notable speed bump over the current crop of A9's, enough to push 4K in the Tegra's case.

Huawei's chairman, Richard Yu, also suggested, in an interview with Engadget China, that the K3V3 will be installed in the devices which follow the just released Ascend D2 and Ascend Mate, but don't expect them to land for a little while yet!

CES 2013: Lenovo launch a barrage of new smartphones, including the stunning K900!

Lenovo has brought a flood of new smartphones to CES and the list is almost as extensive as Alcatel's!

Before we start it's worth noting that all of these smartphones will run various versions of Android and they all have dual-SIM card slots! They will be available first in Lenovo's home market, China, this month and will then fan out to "select global markets" thereafter!

As you can see from the family portrait above these are very good looking smartphones! So lets find out some of the juicy details about them! Starting with the flagship IdeaPhone K900!

The Lenovo IdeaPhone K900!

Some of you out there who are super up to date might already know about the K900, but if you don't it's Lenovo's brand new flagship device. It's got a whopping 5.5" full 1080p HD display and one of them brand new 2GHz dual-core chipsets from Intel! The PPI of this device is over 400, so the pixel density will be only marginally lower than the display on the new crop of 5" flagships from Sony and HTC!

Other than that you've got your normal array of connectivity and sensor options and the rear-camera which has a 13MP sensor, equalling Sony's Xperia Z. The device will arrive with Android 4.2 with Lenovo's skin on top which is great to hear!

The stand out thing about this phone to us is the design! It's stunning! We love the squared off corners and the metal which is clad around every inch of this device! We're not sure how well it'd hold up to scratches and everyday use by goodness it looks beautiful!

The Lenovo S890!

There's also the Lenovo S890, which its the company claims is best suited to those who use their phone for entertainment. They are targetting "young consumers of the “digital native” generation" who expect high performance and they demand a lot out of their devices.

The phone sports a 5-inch screen with a slightly disappointing 960x540 qHD screen, an 8MP auto-flash camera and Lenovo crammed this into a body which is 9.3mm thick and is relatively heavy at 176g. Lenovo seems to be very proud of their their “loop” design which will hopefully make the phone feel thinner than it actually is and their 'Super Camera Software' but again we're not sure what that is!

The Lenovo S720!

Next up is the similarly elegant Lenovo S720. The device's multimedia features are the stand out feature of this device. There's built-in Dolby Digital Plus and the same Super Camera software which the S890 has. The specs on this one include a MTK SOC,a  4.5-inch IPS display with the same 960 by 540 pixel resolution, and your two cameras will be 1 and 8MP shooters on the front and back respectively. The 2000mAh battery should be enough to get you through the day!

The Lenovo P770!
The lovely Lenovo P770 is the next in line and this device is targeted towards business professionals who need a highly reliable handset. So to that end Lenovo will try to satisfy you with a giant 3,500mAh battery, which Lenovo has given the option of sharing some of its power with your other equipment through USB on-the-go support. That battery will give your dual-sim card options up to 30 hours(!!!) continuous talk time! We don't know the other specs at the moment but we expect they'll be similar to the device above!

The Lenovo A800!

The device above with the interesting knobbly backing is the A800. This is an entry-level device, but given that is its target audience this is surprisingly powerful! There's a dual-core 1.2GHz chip and a 4.5-inch FWVGA screen that's 854 x 480 pixels and you've got another big battery, this time it's got a capacity of 2,000mAh!

The Lenovo A690!

Unfortunately we couldn't find a picture of this little guy, but he's got a 4.0-inch WVGA, thats 480 x 800 pixel display and a processor of around about 1GHz will keep him running. Given Lenovo's lack of a photo and seemingly very little attention paid to him we assume he's the cheapest of the bunch and will probably end up delivering Lenovo the most sales in their emerging markets!

Dual SIM capabilities allow you to move seamlessly across networks wherever your job may take you.

The A800 strikes a strong balance between performance and price, granting users access to a range of specs that have normally been reserved for much more expensive phones. With a dual core, 1.2GHz CPU and dual SIM slots for switching between data plans on the go, the A800 is a solid performer for work and play. A 4.5-inch FWVGA display, accompanied by a 2000mAh battery, ensures the A800’s performance stands up for photo sharing, games and web-browsing. Best of all, the A800 offers all of this in an affordable package, making it an ideal choice for first-time smartphone users or those seeking an all-round performer on a budget.
A690, Balance and Value
The IdeaPhoneA690 challenges preconceptions about what can be offered with an entry-level smartphone. The phone is the first in its class to break the 1GHz barrier, offering speed and responsiveness previously unheard of for the most affordable phones. With a 4.0-inch 800X480 WVGA screen, which also surpasses the competition, the A690 delivers an enhanced viewing experience with sharper resolution. The ergonomically designed A690 feels great in the hand and also offers dual SIM capability so users can select the most cost-effective data plan for their changing needs.

Press release for the Lenovo K900:

Latest Lenovo Smartphone Pushes Design Boundaries
Top-end device packs premium performance into slimmest profile in class

LAS VEGAS – January 8, 2013: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced its latest flagship smartphone, the K900, a premium smartphone with a super-slim profile whose look and feel make it a must-have for those who will see and be seen with their smartphones. A unique blend of design and performance, the K900 sports a 5.5" IPS screen, one of the best camera arrays available in class and a super slim 6.9mm profile, all running on an Intel® Atom processor.
"With the K900, our team has broken down the key functions of the smartphone and redesigned them from the ground up," said Liu Jun, president, Mobile Internet Digital Home, and senior vice president, Lenovo. "Rather than focus on specifications that look good on a datasheet, we've zeroed in on what consumers want and proved that for smartphone users, top performance doesn't require a thick profile. The K900 is a game-changer that looks as good as it performs."
"Intel is pleased to provide the processor that will power Lenovo's latest flagship, K900. This innovative smartphone exemplifies the close cooperation between Lenovo and Intel. We believe that consumers will appreciate Lenovo's cutting-edge design and the overall responsiveness provided by Intel's next generation processor." - Hermann Eul, General Manager, Mobile and Communications Group, Intel
Design
As smartphones have become ubiquitous, customer demands on "top-of-the-line" devices have increased, with design and usability growing in importance. The K900 resets the bar on these aspects. At 6.9mm, the K900 is the thinnest phone in its class by a wide margin and weighs in at a mere 162g, making it a device that unobtrusively slips into a jacket pocket or handbag. Made from a composite of stainless steel alloy and polycarbonate in a Unibody mold, the K900 manages to stay strong and look sharp while maintaining its slim profile.
The material alone is not the only aspect that has allowed Lenovo to achieve a design milestone with the K900 however. The rear camera array has been optimized for size with a new sensor and layout that does not protrude from the case, leaving a clean, smooth rear face that doesn't snag on clothing. The design team tweaked the PCB and battery layout to reduce the space used by internal components. And the K900 is topped off by a unique "stripe" ID language that reinforces the thin body and integrates the external components.
While the K900 is certainly sleek, it does not ignore the emerging trend toward larger and clearer displays on smartphones. The K900 is one of the first smartphones in the world to combine a 5.5" IPS display with 1080p full high-definition resolution performance at 400+ pixels-per-inch, all under the latest, touch- capacitive Gorilla Glass 2. This gives the K900 supreme clarity and crispness along with plenty of space to capture the nuances of high-definition photos and video, as well as for viewing standard-size web pages.
Performance
Amazingly for such a sleek package, the K900 does not skimp on performance. Centered on the forthcoming Intel® Atom processor platform for smartphones, the K900 is very responsive, especially for key functions such as web-browsing and application-loading. Although Intel® has yet to release complete specifications for the new chipset, Lenovo has clearly maximized the opportunity to be the first to market with the new generation platform.
The K900's camera stands out as one of the smartphone's most distinguished features. As with other functions on the K900, Lenovo has overhauled the camera completely, and delivered a package that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Megapixels is the first specification that many users recognize for digital cameras, and with 13MP, the K900 ranks at the top of its class in this aspect and combines this with an industry-leading, Sony® Exmor BSI sensor for what would already be considered outstanding performance.
With the K900 though, the team has gone even further. Recognizing that customers often need to take clear, flash-less photos in low-light, Lenovo has equipped the K900 with an F1.8 focal length lens, making it the first smartphone to offer such a wide aperture on its camera. Combined with its other specifications, the K900 is now a legitimate stand-in for a digital camera in a smartphone. In addition to these improvements to the rear camera, the front camera has also been widened to an 880 viewing angle, the widest available on a smartphone front camera for convenient self-photos and video calls.
Pricing and Availability*
The K900 smartphone will be available from April in China, and in select regional markets soon thereafter. Pricing for the K900 will be announced at a later date.
*Prices do not include tax or shipping and are subject to change without notice and is tied to specific terms and conditions. Reseller prices may vary. Price does not include all advertised features. CES 2013: Dell refresh the Inspiron R line-up and the XPS 13 and announce Project Ophelia!

Dell refreshes the Inspiron R range!

So far at CES has been crazy and there's been a trend of subtle, but necessary refreshes and refinement, Vizio is the stand out candidate when we think about that! So the Inspiron R, Dell's mass market range, has been upgraded with a new slimmed down form factor and a set of new options which now includes touchscreen support!

There's still the same three screen sizes on offer here; they're 14, 15 and 17 inches and with the new makeover the smaller two measure about an inch thick when they're closed and they top the scales at less than five pounds. But, just because they're slimmer doesn't mean they've cut corners; there's still the tray-loading optical drive, and if you opt for a 15R or 17R you'll also have enough room for a numberpad o your keybaord!

On the spec front it's pretty much as you'd expect and you can essentially customise all of the internals. You can choose any processor from an Intel Celeron all the way through from an i3 to an i7 rig. You can also have up to 8GB of RAM, Intel Wireless Display and for graphics you can chose between a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT640M or a 2GB AMD Radeon HD 8730M. Storage options are similarly broad: at the expensive end there's a 1TB HDD and at the bottom you can have a 320GB model.

One area of relative weakness is the screen department. The 14R and 15R have a standard resolution of  1,366 x 768, while the 17-incher comes will arrive with a 1,600 x 900 resolution. Thanfully, there are 1080p displays available for the 15 and 17 inch models.

So if you live in the USA then the Inspiron 15R will start at are $430 and you can expect to add $70 to that if you want the basic 17R. If you're wanting a touchscreen that's extra and the cost is $650 for both the 14R and 15R basic models. If you live in the UK you'll be getting less value for your money and we expect you can swap that $ sign for a £ sign on the price of these computers!

The Dell XPS 13 gets refreshed too!

Dell XPS 13 ultrabook is one sleek bit of kit and so Dell has simply decided to change around the internals!

The refresh will offer an Intel Core i5 processor, a 128GB SSD, a mix of USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, a mini-DisplayPort and an Ethernet plug. Naturally the stellar battery life will remain. But, the difference now is that the display is finally bumped to Full HD resolution and it's now 'edge-to-edge' and it's coated by Gorilla Glass.

Thankfully the CNC-machine milled aluminum frame and lid, the magnesium alloy palmrest, and the carbon fiber frame will remain totally untouched. At the moment this isn't a full announcement, instead we expect to hear that from Dell, along with pricing and availability at some point later this month!

Dell's Project Ophelia!

Dell's cloud computing arm today offered up a little surprise which we weren't expecting to see! They showed off Dell's Project Ophelia which essentially is a gateway to your computing world.

The premise is that you don't want to carry your laptop everywhere with you, which is fair enough and totally true in our case! So what Project Ophelia offers is an oversized Android stick that has the ability to turn your HDTV or any monitor with the suitable connections into your computer.

So the Android stick is not a fully fledged computer in any regard, it is instead a gateway to a cloud server where you'll have all of your files saved! With all your content there you will be able to play games, show off your latest presentation, or do some last minute practice, finish off your essay or whatever else you need to do, without your laptop with you!

At the moment we have no idea how you'd control the device, we'd suggest something like this, but nonetheless Dell expects to have all that cleared up by summer time, just in time for every one to be on their holidays, but you can buy one ready for September!

Ultra-Compact Dell Cloud Connection Device Enables Access to Personal and Professional Content From Any Capable Display
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8, 2013 – Dell today unveiled a solution that extends the value of cloud client computing to the next level, enabling people to manage the increasing convergence of their work lives and personal lives by using a compact, portable device to access not only secured professional assets, but also personal content via the cloud. The ultra-compact multimedia-capable device, called Dell Wyse “Project Ophelia,” is slightly larger than a USB memory stick and enables users to convert any capable TV or monitor into a functioning interactive personal display device without using a computer, tablet or smartphone.
Today, people are increasingly looking to take and securely access their personal and professional content wherever they go. Despite rapid advances in mobile technology, however, they still face challenges when it comes to securely accessing desired information when they are away from the office. There is no easy way, for example, to access photos, music or video from a personal cloud or entertainment subscription when away from a PC, smartphone or tablet. Equally, professionals find it difficult to securely access and share work applications, presentations and content if they are away from their usual devices, or worse, if their mobile devices are misplaced or fail during travel. It is also difficult for IT organizations to enable and manage access to enterprise apps and content for highly mobile users, especially those who may be without their preferred laptop, tablet or smartphone.
Built on Dell Wyse software technology already used on millions of devices, Project Ophelia transforms ordinary displays into a window to entertainment, communications and a person’s own personal cloud. The device also allows business users to instantly turn a display into a flexible, securely managed, communications-enabled thin client for work, demos or presentations. These capabilities are packed into a device barely larger than a USB stick that is self-powered through a monitor and easily fits inside your pocket.
The product addresses a variety of uses being fueled by the growing need to access cloud-based apps and resources at any time, or whenever a larger screen high definition digital display provides a superb user experience. Examples include:
- Consumers who desire in-the-moment access to cloud-based games or content but do not have their laptop or tablet in their possession;
- On-line gamers wishing to take advantage of a much larger display for an improved interactive experience;
- Highly mobile professionals who may not have a large display capable device with them; and
- Cloud access providers wishing to provide an attractively priced device included with carrier
internet/wireless services
Key benefits of Project Ophelia:
- Enables instant and secure access to your personal cloud, entertainment, work content and applications wherever there is an available capable display (using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse), including a wide variety of Dell flat-panel displays.
- Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth facilitates access and communication.
- Built on the Android 4 OS to support Web browsing, social networking, media playback and Android Apps
with a possibility to extend to other services.
- Securely connects to Windows desktops and applications running on back-end systems from all leading
infrastructure providers including Citrix, Microsoft and VMware.
- Flexibly powered zero-battery device gets power from the attached display monitor via its MHL interface
to the monitor’s MHL port, or separately via its own USB interface. No batteries to charge or change.
- Remembers settings for each individual to enhance usability.
- Compatible with many existing Dell Wyse thin clients and software products.

- Managed by Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager software-as-a-service (SaaS) which can ensure the device is being used by the appropriate person with the right permissions and access to apps and content based on role, department, and location.
obile devices have small screens, tablets and PCs aren’t always convenient to haul around, and all these devices require batteries that can run down. ‘Project Ophelia’ turns capable TVs and monitors into personal and reliable Wi-Fi enabled work or
entertainment stations – all managed easily by IT via Dell Wyse Cloud Client Manager.”
Availability:
Project Ophelia will be available in the first half of 2013 from Dell Cloud Client Computing.

CES 2013: Gigabyte brings two Windows tablets and a pair of Ultrabooks to market!

The Gigabyte S1185!

Since Windows 8 was launched during autumn last year we've had a barrage of tablet computers. They've run Windows 8 and Windows RT, so is there room for a couple more contenders? Gigabyte certainly thinks so and here is their brand new S1185 tablet.

This device is similar to Microsoft's Surface in that it has an 11.6-inch display, but this one is Full HD and IPS and this tablet runs full Windows 8! With this tablet you have your choice of 3rd Generation Intel Core Processor configurations and there's standard VGA & HDMI ports, a magnetic keyboard, mouse buttons, Optical Finger Navigation when in the PC mode! You'll also get two lovely cameras, but we don't know the resolution, but at least there's the options there!

The Gigabyte S1082!

The S1082 is the little brother of the S1185, think of it as the Ford Focus to the the expensive Mercedes, it'll just get the job done!

This tablet has the latest, most energy dual-core Intel Celeron processor on board and your choice of 500 GB HDD or a smaller SSD, something which would be better for business customers, who Gigabyte is targeting with this device!

The S1082 also packs a HDMI port, a LAN and a VGA port. You'll also be able to connect it via the built in 3G antenna assuming you have a mobile data subscription! Naturally you can also pick up the keyboard dock pictured above for a little extra money!
Via MobileGeeks.

The Gigabyte U2142 Ultrabook!

Gigabyte also brought along a couple of Ultrabooks to CES, the first of which is pictured above and is a a convertible laptop come tablet. The swivel hinge, pictured above, is how the conversion will work and it'll be more than powerful enough to handle both your touch and standard computing needs. There's 3rd Gen Intel Core processors available along with an SSD or HDD, depending on your preference (up to 256GB SSD or 1TB HDD), a good set of connectivity options and ports and full Windows 8 running the show. How big is this thing to cram all that in? Well according to Gigabyte it's a mere 2cm thick!

There's no word on availability as far as we can see, but it should cost right around $999!

The Gigabyte U2442F Ultrabook!

And last, but certainly not least, here is the U2442F, a sweet little Ultrabook which is slightly more powerful then the U2142.

Again there's a 3rd gen Intel Core processor on board, but this time you get a choice of either the NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M or GT 650M GPUs. Seeing as Gigabyte knows this device will be pushed harder by it's users they have included dual air vents which will supposedly keep the Ultrabook from overheating while simultaneously keeping noise as low as possible because the fans won't be working to their maximum!

There's a couple of other cool things here too; the first of them is a backlit keyboard and the second is support for both 128GB SSD and a 750GB/1TB HDD simultaneously! This will give you both a quick boot up time and a good level of storage too!

We expect you'll be able to pick up the U2442F for $1,299 next month!
