Nook Simple Touch - First Impressions.

Some of your guys out there might have been able to snag one of Nook's Simple Touch devices the first time they went on sale here in the UK. Unfortunately, we had a small nightmare with our order: we'll save the story for another day, but suffice it to say that we won't be ordering anything direct from Nook again.

Thankfully though, we managed to get our hands on a couple of these budget eReaders, they turned up this morning and we've literally got them out of the box and we've stuck them on charge, so we're in a pretty good position to offer some first impressions.

As you can see in the image at the top of the page the Simple Touch comes in some nice, simple packaging. The section on the left of the image above is the sleeve which wraps around the section on the right which is home to the eReader itself.

Once you lift up the flap you're greeted by the Simple Touch itself, as you can see in the image to the right. The message which is on the screen is just a warning, in various languages, telling you to make sure that you charge the device's battery to full as soon as you get it. A key component of the charging procedure will be the cable which you use to do that and unfortunately Barnes and Noble have followed Amazon's lead and they've opted to just give you a usb cable to charge the device from your computer.

That's exactly what we tried to do and well it simply didn't work. The device was stuck on a low battery eave plugged in for 15 minutes warning screen for about 2 hours before we got bored and plugged in our phone charger and surprise, surprise the eReader turned right on. Because of that we might recommend using your phone charger on the eReader if you have the same issue.

Other than charging everything was painless, you connect the device to your wifi much like you would any other tablet or phone and then you have to log into your Nook account to get everything up and running. We'll give you more of a run down in our full review in the coming weeks.

Something which struck us from the moment we took the device out of the box was how chunky this device is compared to a Kindle, when you take into account the price of this device though, it's a sacrifice which isn't too bad as you can see below. On the plus side though the plastic construction is nice and there's not really much chance of you accidentally dropping this device.

One thing which immediately stands out is that the screen is slightly recessed so we can see that getting dirty and dusty pretty quickly, but we'll let you know whether that happens in our full review! Check out the images down below to see how the device looks!

If you still haven't picked one up and you're quick you can still get them from Argos here for £29!

Microsoft considering Nook buyout worth $1 billion?

Today there's been a rumour, which started over at TechCrunch, which says that internal documents from Microsoft reveal that the Redmond giant is preparing to offer up $1 billion to buy the digital assets of Nook, part of the Barnes and Noble group! The idea is that Microsoft could utilize the digital section of the company, so the eBooks, eReaders and the Nook tablets.

Part of the 'internal document' says that Android-based tablets won't be offered by the company at the end of this year and there were rumours about this which surfaced in February. Instead of offering their own hardware it seems as though Nook will use apps on 'third-party' hardware, but we're not sure if that means just devices powered by Microsoft's operating system or other tablets more widely.

What do you think? Are the recent price drops a way of the company clearing inventory before an expected buyout? The stock markets certainly think so and the price of Barnes and Noble shares have soared today by 18% following the report from TechCrunch this morning!

Google overtakes Microsoft to become World Tech Giant No.2!

We all know that the tech world is incredibly competitive and the big hitters come and go, we can look to people like RIM and Nokia for proof of that. But, at this moment in time Apple is the clear leader, being the most valuable company in the world, period. But, behind them and just in the tech sector we have you're everyday names; Google, Microsoft, IBM, AT&T and the list goes on.

But, today we heard that Google now has over $249 billion in market cap which means they are now more valuable than Microsoft, which fell to around $248.8 billion today.

While not important for much more than that, it does perhaps reflect where investors think technology is heading as the power of the internet continues to grow. But, Microsoft will remain an incredible powerful company for the foreseeable future irrespective of their market worth!

Barnes and Noble gives Nook Simple Touch GlowLight discounts!

Most of you bookworms out there probably have an Amazon Kindle eReader by now. But, there might be a small portion of you who have opted for a Kobo, Sony or even a Barnes and Noble reader instead? If you fall into none of those categories and you're looking to purchase a new good quality one then B&N might have the answer for you!

Barnes and Noble have chalked $20 off the price of the eReader, bringing it right into line with Amazon's Kindle at $119.

But, the company isn't happy with just a reduced price but the company has been explaining how the NOOK Simple Touch will actually be better value for money. They point out that their device includes an AC adapter, whereas Amazon only put a microUSB cable in the box for the Kindle Paperwhite. If you want a proper Amazon adaptor well that's $9.99 on top, but you don't need it, you could use any standard MicroUSB charger.

There's also them pesky ads to consider. The Nook eReader won't have any, whereas Amazon's offering will, unless you chalk up another $20 to get rid of them too! So maybe you can have a second thought if you are looking for a shiny new eReader for Christmas.... It's not too early to be thinking about that is it?!?!

In other news:

  • Nokia and Oracle have inked a deal which would see the latter integrate the formers Mapping solutions into their products, particularly for custom geo-location work in Enterprise servers!
  • Sharp has announced they are beginning productions of 5" 1080p screens for upcoming smartphones!
  • Samsung's Galaxy Note II is now officially on sale in the UK! And there's a drop test just below.
  • Apple is facing an EU investigation after they have 'continually' ignored EU law. The company has been advertising their products with a 1 year warranty, when EU law stipulates that those sorts of products should have 2 years. The investigation will decide if Apple was intentionally trying to get customers to purchase AppleCare. If they're found guilty then there will be a lofty fine!

And finally, HP have unveiled their ElitePad 900. It's a stunning bit of kit that includes an Intel Clove Trail processor and 2GB of RAM inside a 1.5-pound brushed aluminum case! It's absolutely stunning. There's a picture and a video for you to marvel at below!

18/06/2012 and an apology.

Hi guys! I would just like to start by saying that this week I am on holiday with my girlfriend and as such if I do post it will only be 'the news in brief' unless I have a tonne of free time! I'm away from now until Friday but I will do my best to post everyday!

The News in Brief.

  • Barnes and Noble have denied any involvement with Microsoft on the creation of a much rumoured Windows tablet. The involvement takes place this evening and if this does prove to be real it'll take centre stage on tomorrow's post!
  • Google has secured a bundle of wireless efficiency patents from Magnolia Broadband, covering network capacity maximization, battery frugality technology and more.
  • Qualcomm has purchased a battery charging company that has a particular specialism in Speed charging! So perhaps S5 chips and future smartphones will go from no juice to that satisfying fully charged beep in a matter of minutes! Well we can always hope!
  • Samsung has released a 'SAFE' branded version of the Galaxy S3. The device has support for AES-256 bit encryption, VPN and Mobile Device Management functionality, among other things.
Of course the main news will be this Microsoft announcement this evening, keep it locked to TheTechFella for all the latest news!
