EE announce new 30 SIM-only plans before rivals get 4G networks up and running!

EE are still in the great and slightly unfair position of being the only company to offer 4G data in the UK because they made use of their existing spectrum to launch 4G a bit earlier than all of the other mobile networks in the UK, who had to wait for the 4G auction to secure some radiowaves.

Until now EE have been a bit reluctant to offer short term SIM-only contracts, instead they've offered 12 month SIM-only contracts. As you can see from the image below EE have put a £2 premium on the monthly cost of these 30 day plans compared to their 12 month counterparts, but this could be a great option for anyone who doesn't want the long commitment of contracts!

EE drop the HTC First before it even arrives!

Over the past few days we've been hearing a lot about HTC's woes and how much they've been struggling, but according to the internet today we've finally got confirmation that their 'Facebook phone,' the HTC First will not arrive on UK shores.

The original plan was that EE were going to offer the phone on their lovely 4G network, but in the face of extremely disappointing sales on AT&T in the US, it seems that the decision has been taken to cancel the venture.

The rumour originally appeared on MobileNewsCWP this morning, but Slashgear have reported receiving this statement from EE:
"Following customer feedback, Facebook has decided to focus on adding new customisation features to Facebook Home over the coming months. While they are working to make a better Facebook Home experience, they have recommended holding off launching the HTC First in the UK, and so we will shortly be contacting those who registered their interest with us to let them know of this decision.
Rest assured, we remain committed to bringing our customers the latest mobile experiences, and we will continue to build on our strong relationship with Facebook so as to offer customers new opportunities in the future."
What do you think? Are you upset the 'Facebook phone' won't land in the UK, or was it never in your plans? Let us know in the comments below!

EE flicks the switch on more UK towns: Smaller towns getting coverage now!

If you live in the UK then EE are still your only option for 4G LTE data services. The rest of the mobile networks will be on their tails soon enough, with everyone except Three confirming that they'll be rolling out the services this year and O2 have just signed a deal which will see BT manage their 4G service!

With that in mind EE have announced another round of places which now have access to their 'Superfast' network. You can now use their services if you live in:
"Aylesbury, Berkhamsted, Billericay, Blackpool, Brentwood, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Lytham St Annes, Marlow, Pontefract, Thame and Windsor."
Two of those places Billericay and Brentwood are in Essex and we would say they're medium size towns. Which means that EE feel that they're at the point where they can start pushing their network outside of the main towns and cities!

As for coverage EE proclaim that they've now showered half of the UK's population with 4G radio waves and by the end of June the company plans to have another 18 towns up and connected, with the ultimate target of 70% coverage by the end of this year!

It'll be interesting to see how far EE's head start got them when other people start turning on their own networks through the coming months! Are you covered by EE or are you still in a frustrating wait? Let us know in the comments below!

EE announce their latest figures: Things are looking pretty good!

EE run the UK's first 4G network; we already know that they're a tad expensive, but they're speed tests seem to be pretty impressive too! So it's interesting to see just how many people wanted to and subsequently did sign up to the new network and that's exactly what we've got an update on today through their Q1 earnings call!

EE have said that they now have 318,000 customers using their 4G network since the network was up and running a mere five months ago and there's now more than 1,600 medium and large businesses using EE for their mobile services, which is pretty darn impressive!

With that solid start already under their belt EE want to continue their growth through to the end of the year and they're targeting one million users by the end of the year along with having double-speed 4G up and running in 10 cities by the end of June and an overall 4G coverage of 70% of the population by the end of the year!

Orange and T-Mobile customers brace yourselves: Price hike number two on the way!

Orange and T-Mobile's parent company, EE, has today announced that they have decided to enact a clause in consumers contracts to increase the price of their contracts in line with the increase measure on the Retail Price Index.

   EE argued that:
"Due to inflation, which directly impacts the costs of running our business, we've had to re-evaluate our prices and introduce an increase from 9 May 2013...We've used the Retail Price Index (RPI) which is currently at 3.3%. This is a measure of the increase in prices for consumers and businesses on average across the country over the last 12 months."
According to EE this should result in a typical price increase of 75p per month per customer, a figure disputed by consumer research site 'Which?' who estimate that it will be around 79p. Assuming that the rise is actually 79p per customer these price increases will see EE rake in anything up to £52 million on top of their current earnings!

We know this won't go down well with consumers and it certainly didn't go down well here at TTF! Indeed, 'Which?'s executive director, Richard Lloyd, described the situation as 'outrageous that customers [are forced] to collectively pay almost £52 million more per year for a mobile phone contract they thought was fixed,' and that's a viewpoint many people will agree with.

The changes won't be enacted for a little while yet though, EE is obliged to contact all customers who will be affects by post 30 days before any changes happen. This means that price increases won't impact you until April 10th if you're on Orange or May 9th if you're with T-Mobile.

In some cases there will be customers who are immune to the price hike, for example you are immune if your contract was taken out with Orange between the 2nd December 2012 and the 8th April 2013, but you will have a 6 month 'freeze' after which your price will go up 3.3% too. To quote T-Mobile's website directly:
"Why are some customers affected and not others? The majority of our customers are affected by this change. However, if you recently joined or upgraded with T-Mobile the increase will be delayed until November 2013.
What if I have recently upgraded on a new pay monthly tariff like The Full Monty? If you have joined or upgraded since 2nd December 2012 on one of our consumer plans the change will be delayed for 6 months. This means you'll see a credit on your bill for 6 months, starting from your bill on or after 09 May.
If you renewed on or after 22nd January 2013 onto one of our new Pay Monthly 24 month plans or the latest Full Monty plans, you will not be affected by the price change.
"

There doesn't seem to be too much rhyme or reason for changes to SIM only or business consumers, but all SIM only deals will face the increases immediately. The 'majority' of T-Mobile business customers will face the rise, whereas 'business customers on Orange are not affected'.

As a way of helping customers Orange and T-Mobile users will be able to sign up to this new 'Fix Your Monthly Plan' option. Ironically this will cost you anywhere from 50p to £2 per month depending on the price of your plan. If your plan is £14.99 or less, "the extra cost to fix your plan is 50p. For plans £15.00-£24.99 it costs £1.00; plans £25-£34.99 it costs £1.50; for plans of £35 or more it's £2.00."

Naturally there is no way to terminate contracts early with this sort of increase so we'll have to stick it out. For further details and justifications check out www.t-mobile.co.uk/pricechanges or www.orange.co.uk/pricechanges, they're more or less the same save for network specific differences and you can check the new price of your bill on those pages too!

South Korean networks warn European counterparts about the costs of 4G!

South Korea may hold the title for the world's most connected country and it might be idolised by many governments and networks in the Western world, but with 30 percent of the country's 50 million residents using the LTE networks the Korean operators have a warning for those in Europe who are about to roll out their LTE offerings!

SK Telecom are South Korea's biggest mobile carrier with more than half of the country using their radio waves, but the guys went on record with Reuters and said that, "although the rollout of faster networks had been good for consumers, they were still struggling to make money on the technology 18 months after launch."

SK Telecom's head, Suk-Cahe Lee, warned that, "Our European colleagues complain that the explosion in data has not fully happened for them, that it did not come to reality... But in Korea, they are data crazy. We have unprecedented demand. We cannot handle it. But the issue we have is that they are not willing to pay enough. So, the fundamental problem is, can we make any money out of it?"

So while the increased speed of 4G is great for consumers, businesses and most other people, it has left the three operators in the country scrapping for every last subscriber and the combined cost of marketing, handset subsidies and keeping tariffs as low has possible has meant that, "The traffic increases but the revenue does not necessarily follow."

Jae W Byun, SK's Chief Technology Office said that they, "have seen about a $13 increase in average revenue per user compared with 3G," which sounds good on paper, but it supposedly isn't enough to cover the costs of the LTE rollout! So if we put that in a European context then we have a tonne of networks all about to offer 4G data, but there's already been a lot of red-tape, especially with Britain's 4G spectrum auction, so the cost in Europe could also be especially high, this will be most notable on operators like Vodafone who are now obliged to offer good indoor coverage to 96% of the population by 2016!, weighed down by regulation, competition and economic woes, are betting that the billions of dollars investment needed for 4G networks will eventually be offset by an increase in customer prices.

We already know the impact that 4G has on data consumption, faster speeds always mean we use more! EE may disagree on that one, but then they don't offer unlimited tariffs and the sheer cost of their plans mean people can't afford to utilise the tariffs with higher data allowances! EE customers have been average 1.4GBs of data used per month, whereas South Korean firms use between 1.8 and 1.9 GB per month, so the average here will probably be similar to that! Just for the sake of comparison that is compared to the average use of 3G networks which comes in around 342 megabytes according to research from Cisco.

So will LTE prove to be "a blessing to customers but it is a curse on the operators" like KT have suggested or will everything work out alright?

Vodafone CEO says 4G is for 'technofreaks'. EE seize the moment for cheap Twitter ad campaign!

Sometimes CEO's really do know how to get attention. A perfect example was a couple of months back when T-Mobile USA's John Legere called Verizon's New York network 'crap'? Well today it was the turn of Vodafone's Vittorio Colao who took shots at EE's new 4G network.

To be fair to Colao his point is sort of valid, but he didn't necessarily express it in the best way possible. He said:
“I haven’t seen any figures but when I visited an EE store to see how fast it was all I saw was technofreaks in there. I haven’t heard any calls from friends, colleagues of businesses that we need this fast internet... With the increase in data speeds of HSPA+ (a faster version of 3G) an early LTE network won’t be much different.”

Perhaps, 'technofreaks' wasn't the best term to use, but everyone always wants faster internet don't they? That's why they buy fibre optic connections instead of the traditional copper wires? Either way it didn't take too long for EE to get wind of this remark and earlier today they posted this up on their Twitter page! Why waste a good promotional opportunity?

22/01/2013: Microsoft confirms Surface Pro availability and pricing, EE offers improved 4G plans, AMD appointments and much more!

Microsoft Surface Pro gets arrival time and price tags!

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet has proved to be an interesting device, it's not running fully fledged Windows, but the device definitely has a place and more importantly a future at Microsoft. The new Surface Pro on the other hand is a totally different beast. Running full Windows 8 on relatively conventional hardware, all of which is crammed into a tablet form factor, this truly is the mobile computing experience.

We've had to wait a little while to hear about the Surface Pro's but alas we now know the devices will be available in both America and Canada from February the 9th! The tablets are a step up in price from the Surface RT's and so this bunch starts from $899!

The $899 will buy you 64GB of solid-state storage as standard, as well as a digital Surface pen, but if you add another hundred dollars you can have a 128GB of storage.

The rest of the device's internals include Intel’s Core i5 processor and HD Graphics 4000 GPU pairing, 4GB of dual-channel memory and a 10.6-inch Clear Type display which is Full HD, 1920 x 1080, and offers 10-point multitouch and support for the stylus we mentioned earlier!

The device will have a good set of connections which include; WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 3.0 port, a microSDXC memory card slot, a headset jack, a Mini DisplayPort, and of course the connector for those keyboard covers! Your device will be nicely rounded out with a microphone, stereo speakers, and a two 720p capable webcams, one on each side of the device, all of which should make those Skype calls work well, as will the kickstand!

All of this is crammed into a case which is 10.81 x 6.81 x 0.53 inches and will weigh less than 2lbs! One interesting addition is a special 48W power supply which has a little 5W USB port for making sure your accessories keep going as long as the tablet does!

You can pick one of these up from Microsoft stores or online, unless of course you would prefer to pop to Staples or Best Buy if you live in the USA! If you live outside of the US or Canada you are still greeted with the 'Coming Soon' message, so we might see something soon about wider releases!

EE out new limited edition 4G plans with extra data!

Since EE, the terrible twosome of Orange and T-Mobile, outed their 4G plans they were widely criticised by tech websites for their extortionate prices and very limited data options. Surprisingly it actually seems like EE took a little bit of notice and they've offered up a few more tariffs which have caught our attention this time!

EE are today offering some more less expensive plans the first of which is £31 per month plan costs, some £5 per month less than EE's cheapest standard offer. This plan will be available from January 31st to March 31st and it will include your normal unlimited minutes and texts, 500MB of data and it will require a 24 month commitment, but you will now be able to get some more inexpensive phones which have 4G capabilities. You can get both the HTC One SV and the Windows Phone 8 powered Nokia Lumia 820 from £29.99, which is actually a saving of nearly £100 compared to standard EE deals!

Most of you will probably be more drawn in by this one though. It's designed for 'super users', who currently make up less than 1% of EE's users, but you can get your hands on 20GB of data, as well as those unlimited minutes and texts, for £46. If you want a phone with that the contract price jumps up to £61. You can get the deals in store from today all the way up to February the 28th!

These still aren't cheap plans by any stretch of the imagination, but we'll have to wait for 4G deployment from other networks before we see some sort of value! For the moment we're sticking with unlimited 3G data!

The press release is available here.

OFCOM opens consultation over price rises during the life of your phone contract.

During the last few months those of us who live in the UK will most likely have been subjected to price rises for our phone contracts. The reason for this is that in the small print of our terms and conditions, which no one ever reads, there is a sentence which allows the carrier to raise the cost of your contract by a small percentage of it's cost if the network deems it necessary, this would probably be enacted, as it has recently, to keep the cost of your contract in line with inflation.

It seems OFCOM doesn't think this is entirely fair, after all you sign up for a contract at a certain price and you don't normally expect it to change during the life of the contract. That's why OFCOM has opened a consultation on how to manage changes to phone tariffs during the lifetime of the initial contract. Ofcom wants to implement an approach where you will be allowed to duck out of your contract without paying any penalties if your service provider introduces any price increase during the life of the contract.

Carriers themselves would be obliged to be clear and upfront about any potential changes in the cost of contracts from the off and they would have to state your right to cancel the contract in the event of any price increase. The idea behind this is that it would remove the unfair price hikes which can ad have been used lately and it would remove the issues of people complaining to OFCOM because they had to pay the extra money without knowing it was in the contract. Indeed, Claudio Pollack, Ofcom’s Consumer Group Director, said: “Many consumers have complained to us that they are not made aware of the potential for price rises in what they believe to be fixed contracts."

Other than this there are a few other options for OFCOM which include; tackling the current lack of transparency around the potential for price increases, cosidering whether consumers should have the choice to “opt-in” to contract with a variable price, which like credit cards offer. Or finally, OFCOM could issue a carpet ban on price rises contracts, which would seem to be the most logical step if they wish to avoid confusion and keep consumers happy and protected.

We'll find the findings of OFCOM's consultation on March the 14th and OFCOM thinks they'll be ready to publish their findings some time in June.

[UPDATE]

Vodafone are the first company to comment on the OFCOM proposal and the main points of their statement are outlined below:

"We support Ofcom's desire to give consumers reassurance about the prices that they will pay during their contract, but the regulator's proposals risk generating significant confusion and potentially increasing the cost of getting a mobile phone contract for millions of people. As such they could damage what Ofcom's own research shows is the best value mobile phone market for consumers anywhere in Europe.
“We believe there is work to be done to ensure that customers understand the need for long-term contracts and to ensure they are protected during that time, but Ofcom first needs to understand the difference between the prices that are set by mobile phone companies and those which are not.... We simply do not control many of the charges faced by consumers. They are set by third parties and mobile phone companies have to pass those costs on or they will be subsidising other companies. Prices set by third parties such as BT, include those for directory enquiry services, premium rate and 08 numbers. Yet Ofcom appears resolved to introduce measures that would effectively prevent any rises in these prices being recouped while customers are still in contract." Statement via KYM.

Vodafone argues this will mean carriers try to second guess what price increases third parties will attempt to introduce and as such the initial cost of contracts will increase and given their argument we can almost sympathise with them.

This will be the most popular one without doubt! It's the return of Google's maps to iOS! For whatever reason Apple gave Google's solution the boot with the introduction of iOS6. Apple's new maps weren't received very well; Australian police still advise you not to use them and even Tim Cook himself suggested people use other (Nokia (now called Here)) maps while Apple ironed out the teething problems!

But alas we don't have that problem any more! Google's Maps are back with 2D, 3D and street view options in tow! There's also turn-by-turn navigation, although it lacks the indoor maps, the ability to download maps for offline viewing, and voice search which you get on the Android version of the app, although that shouldn't upset most people!

Google Now for Android.
Google Now received another update today, but at the moment we're not sure what this update brings to the organiser!

BBC iPlayer for Android.
The BBC has today posted a blog post outlining their commitment to providing the best quality of iPlayer for the vast range of devices which run Android. They said it is this diversity which has caused them problems, but they're now working to making Android updates happen quickly and in a comparable time frame to their iOS updates!

The BBC said their three mains goals are:

1. Improve the playback experience.
2. Achieve feature parity between iOS and Android.
3. Support a variety of screen sizes.
The guys finished off by outlining their plans for the future:
"Before Christmas we're going to enable iPlayer on Jellybean 4.2 and offer a richer tablet experience on devices such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.
Thereafter--with Adobe and Google's help--we'll improve playback on devices like the Sony Xperia Arc. Into 2013 we'll prioritise the most popular Android devices so we can deliver the best experience for the biggest audience. As you can see this is just the beginning."

Hopefully this will mean a much better tablet UI, which isn't too shoddy already, and then much better playback on other devices which have some issues at the moment!

Google apps for Windows platforms.
Google has offered a rather brutal condemnation of Microsoft's platforms in a recent interview from Clay Bavor, Google's Director of Product Management for Google Apps. He was speaking with V3 when he said
“We have no plans to build out Windows apps. We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8. If that changes, we would invest there, of course."
   Ouch! Sorry Windows users!

30/11/2012: EE to sign a naming deal with Wembley Stadium? $99 Nexus 7? Jelly Bean for the Razr HD's and much more!

Wembley Stadium to sign a naming deal with phone network EE!

England's most iconic sporting arena may be on the verge of getting a little name change! The mobile brand EE is on the verge of becoming a "naming partner of Wembley Stadium," according to John Reynolds of Marketing Magazine.

It's been reported that The FA has been on the look our for a commercial partner for the stadium for quite a while. If the rumours are correct it looks like this deal could be worth somewhere in the region of £8M per year, which translates into 12.8M US Dollars.

Thankfully the agreement will not mean that the Wembley name will be changed to the EE Arena, or whatever else EE's marketing guys could come up with! The FA realised that that would have been an alienating decision, but EE will likely be incorporated into the stadium name in one way or another, probably along the lines of 'Wembley in association with EE.'

This would be EE's first move into the football advertising world but T-Mobile and Orange have sponsored Bayern Munich and the French football league already.

Unsurprisingly it was Samsung who were out in front but it's good news for Sony, who put their success down to the greater confidence in its name since they dropped the Ericsson branding, but Sony has released so many different handsets to cover every budget and every need that that must have had something to do with their success!

Revenue for the App Store was up too, but the growth wasn't quite as spectacular with revenues up 12.9%, but on the whole iDevices are still more profitable. Is this finally the growth of developer profit on Android? Have you got an app and noticed a big difference lately? Let us know!

    RIM release Playbook OS 2.1!

RIM and their Playbook in particular are interesting entities. The Playbook's themselves are great little devices and they are selling extremely cheaply at the moment. But, RIM has also had a good track record with their updates too! Every time the company has promised some improvements they have arrived, if slightly late a couple of times.

    Everything Everywhere's 4G future.

Yesterday evening we speculated what would be coming from today's Everything Everywhere event. Turns out we weren't too far off the mark; we were slightly wrong about the speed of the roll out (they'll have 98% coverage by 2014 and 40% coverage by this Christmas) and we didn't hear anything about a 4G iPhone, but then again that'd steal Apple's thunder.

But, what we did learn today is that EE, which is Everything Everywhere's new name (and will be appearing on your Orange/T-Mobile handset very soon), will have a pretty stellar line up of mifi's and phones to take the brunt of your high speed internet abuse!

From the picture below you may be able to pick out, from left to right, a little Huawei mifi, the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE, the HTC One XL, the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, Nokia Lumia 920 and the 820 too! (both of which are EE exclusives) and a nice little dongle too!

At the moment we don't know whether or not we'll be seeing an iPhone 5, but tomorrow will reveal all!

Aside from that EE has promised to light up 40% of the country before Christmas with Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Southampton being the first spots to get the fast mobile internet!

On a slightly unrelated note, the company also said they will start offering fibre optic broadband to customers, but we don't have any information on when this will be happening! Ohhh and so you now EE is cleverly calling their new network 4GEE... See what they did there!!! Yeah, I wasn't impressed either!

    In other news:

    • Analysts are predicted Apple will be able to ship 10 million of their new iPhone's to willing buyers before the end of September! Remember the announcement is tomorrow!!!
    • If you're a GiffGaff customer then you may well want to read this! The company is having to reconsider it's £10 giftbag because they can't offer unlimited data for that price any more. So today is the start of a consultation period which ends on the 20th of September and there are 3 possible outcomes, so before you see them make sure you head over to their site to voice your opinion! Your choices are;
    • Increase the price of the current £10 Goodybag to £13
    • Keep the £10 Goodybag but limit data to 750mb
    • Offer a £10 Goodybag with 750mb or a £13 Goodybag with unlimited data
