Rovio partner with Sony for a 3D animated comedy film arriving in 2016!

Rovio have been busy lately: first it was Rovio Stars and now they're busy confirming that they'll have a new film on the way! Today it's been announced that Sony Pictures have won an exclusive worldwide distribution contract for an upcoming Angry Birds film!

The film is set to be a 3D animated comedy which is being funded, produced and developed by Rovio and will subsequently be released by Sony on the 1st of July 2016. According to Rovio's press release there were a ton of applicants and they decided Sony were the best bet.

The film will give key positions to John Cohen and David Maisel, both of which are famous in their own right already. Cohen has already produced Despicable Me and Maisel has been executive producer of Iron Man, so these are big names! The pair said:
“We are very excited to join with Sony Pictures in presenting this movie to the world in 2016 and we will have many more announcements as we begin production in the coming months.”

   Rovio's Mikael Hed added that:
“Sony impressed us with their great attitude, determination, and professionalism. They convinced us that we have found the right partners and team to help us market and distribute our first motion picture. Michael, Amy, Jeff Blake, Sony's marketing and distribution head, and their teams will be the best possible collaborators as we get set to take our franchise to the next level.”
The movie basically builds on the direction which Rovio are already taking with their little Toons series which is broadcast weekly on their Angry Birds apps! It'll be great to see where the guys take the film and how they make a story about pigs stealing eggs last an hour and a bit, but we'll be at the premier!

Angry Birds Friends lands on Android and iOS as the original game comes to Windows Phone!

A couple of days ago we brought you news that Rovio's smash hit Angry Birds would be coming to Android and iOS devices with a new version of the story in the shape of Angry Birds Friends.

It's quite likely that if you're a big fan you'll have played the game on Facebook already. You can supplement your online competitive tournaments with quick games against each other on your phone now. The game is available on Google Play here and iOS here!

Secondly it seems that Rovio have finally got around to updating the original Angry Birds for both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8! According to their website the game 'will have over 400 levels from the get-go, and will be free to download for the first two weeks. The Windows Phone 8 version will also have Xbox Live integration with new achievements and leaderboards!' The update is free until the 15th of May so get it now!

Rovio are doing pretty well: 2012 sees revenues double and cuddly toys step up sales.

Rovio are super famous for their Angry Birds franchise, you will probably have noticed how they now sell everything from lunch boxes to cuddly toys and everything through to Angry Birds USB sticks and beyond! It turns out that selling all of that stuff is actually a pretty good for business and their 2012 earnings report is just in, so lets see how it looks!

Rovio confirmed that through 2012 full year revenue was up by a whopping 101% and it finished up at €152.2 million (somewhere near $195 million). This led their CFO, Herkko Soininen, to remark how:
"Year 2012 was another record-breaking year for Rovio. We doubled our revenue with an EBIT margin of 50 percent, more than doubled our headcount, established new offices and a New Business Ventures unit... Also, to protect our own, as well as our partners’ and our fans’ interests, we continue to invest heavily in brand protection globally."
If we think back to last year Rovio released a tonne of new games. There were four key releases: Angry Birds Space, Amazing Alex, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Star Wars. Between those games and the original Angry Birds game Rovio had more than a billion downloads and their active monthly users are now on above a quarter of a billion people at 263 million.

With the recent release of The Croods game, Angry Birds Toons and probably some more games this year, Rovio is confident that their games will be downloaded more than 1.7 billion time before this year is out!

As we said right at the start, Rovio isn't just making money from selling their apps and in game purchases any more. They're selling a lot of other things too. Cuddly toys and other things branded by Rovio are now 45 percent of the company's revenue and that is a three-fold increase from 2011!  We can only see that going from strength to strength in the future!

What do you guys think? Can Rovio sustain this sort of growth or will the Angry Birds bubble burst soon? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Apps: Upfront costs are dead - long live 'freemium'?

A couple of years ago you could expect to pony up 69 cents, pence or euros for the latest game or app to land in the app store, it was just how things worked. But, it seems that of late the way people and developers are changing and we're steering very much towards in-app purchasing. What's really interesting that if you have a look at the top ten downloaded apps on iOS you'll find that there is one paid app in the top 10 iPhone chart and the same is true of the iPad stakes too! In both instances that app is Minecraft and that is an exceptional app, which justifies its relatively high up-front cost.

This is quite the contrast from a few years ago; when the iDevices launched the iPhone saw a plethora of 69p games available and the iPad applications were even more expensive than that, some of them nearing the price you would expect to pay for computer or games console content!

So why the influx of free games? Well part of this can be attributed to in-app purchases, you might have heard about them, they tend to make the news because children have a horrible habit of spending a thousand or so pounds through this sales avenue! Indeed, BGR reports that:
"Leading app developers have figured out how to decouple download volume from revenue generation by creating free games that seduce their fans into paying steadily for in-app features. The types of of games that require a $0.99 or a $2.99 fee per download are turning into something resembling nostalgia items. For a stark example of how badly the revenue generation power of paid apps has faded, consider that the current #1 paid app on iPhone, Wood Camera, is 46th on the iPhone chart that lists top-grossing apps."
That compares very unfavourably with things like Clash of Clans which was one of the top grossing apps through January this year, but it was ranked a lowly 53rd on the iPad download chart for the same month!

The way to consumers hearts, it appears, is to offer them something for free and then slowly, but steadily, require them to purchase things in-app! This was so successful through 2012 that in total nearly 70% of all revenue earned through Apple's App Store arrived through in-app purchases. EA All Play's senior vice president and general manager, Nick Earl has said that:
"One of our predictions for 2013 is that freemium gaming models (and in conjunction, the availability of in app purchases) will become the norm... The majority of our portfolio is now freemium games —they tend to monetize better than one-time-downloads, and allow us to cater to the consumer demand for premium experiences at little to no cost."
EA are the biggest earners on both Android and iOS so it's no surprise that where they lead other smaller developers will follow.

One stark example of how successful this model is Rovio's star game 'Angry Birds'. For the last few years Angry Birds has been a 69p app on the App Store, but very recently the app and its HD cousin became free! We're not sure if that's a permanent move or not, but we would suggest that it is and here's why. If you point your browser to the website link to Angry Birds on the App Store on the left-hand side about half way down you see this, right. If you just have a little look at the pricing of the in-app add-ons you'll see that the cheapest options are 69p and the most expensive are £3! So Angry Birds is now free, more people will download it, if anyone buys two in-app add-on Rovio ends up making more money then they would with the one time purchase model! Add to this the fact that Rovio charged 69p for Angry Birds for three or so years beforehand, securing the title as the most downloaded app of all time and it's easy to see why this game has been so successful for the company, and it's clear that now is as good a time as any to shift to the in-app purchasing model.

So whether we like it or not it seems that 'freemium' apps with their in-app buying options are here to stay! But, what do you think? You now know it's cheaper to pay for the app in one go up-front, but do you prefer the in-app purchases? Would you rather apps were ad-supported? Let us know in the comments below!

Angry Birds Toons coming next month!

Ohhh Angry Birds, if they aren't your favourite fowl by now then they never will be, some people can't get enough of them, others are sick to death of them. No matter which side of the fence you sit on they aren't going any where soon, indeed the franchise will be expanding soon with the addition of cartoon series starring the little critters!

The series will launch on March the 16th and 17th, which is only a couple of weeks off and the series will be called Angry Birds Toons!

We've known that this has been in the works for some time now, but this will give us a chance to see more of the Angry World which Rovio has in their minds. Perhaps Rovio will even go as far as telling us why there is so much tension between the birds and pigs in the first place, or what the pigs plan on doing with those eggs!

The only strange thing here is that this won't be a conventional cartoon in that you won't watch it on your TV, well unless you share it from your mobile device. The series will only be available to watch on your smartphone or tablet, perhaps this had something to do with the delay since the intended launch last November.

For those of you who can't wait there's the little teaser below and then after that we will be treated to 52 episodes per year, but each episode will last only a few minutes. After the cartoon has been going for a few years we can expect to see the official Angry Birds movie in 2016, which will be directed by Despicable Me‘s John Cohen!

11/12/2012: Skydrive for iOS in jeopardy, Larry Page speaks, HTC One SV, SkyGo for Android updated and more!

Skydrive for iOS in jeopardy over in-app subscription upgrades!

This is not really a surprise but it seems Microsoft will have to start coughing up 30% of their 'subscription fee' for the upgrade to Skydrive if you upgrade through the iOS app.

It's quite clear why this will be an issue for Microsoft. The upgrade path, which is new to their iOS app gives users the ability to upgrade their SkyDrive subscriptions straight from their Apple phone or tabler. This functionality though makes the purchase an 'in-app' purchase and as such Apple will be taking their 30% cut from the sale.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft is not on the same page as Apple when it comes to that size of cut and because their SkyDrive subscriptions aren’t exclusive to iOS, Microsoft is arguing that they should be exempt from the 30% charge!

We understand why Microsoft has a problem here, but by the same token Apple's 30% cut has been their since the inception of the App Store. We're sure Microsoft could find a work around, but for the mean time your in-app upgrade for Skydrive may well be disappearing!

Larry Page offers a rare interview: talks about Apple, Android and a Motorola Nexus!

It's not every week that we get interview from Tim Cook, Eric Schmidt and Larry Page! But a terrible tech trio has been rounded out this week with Larry Page stepping forward to offer some views! This week he sat down with Miguel Helft from Fortune to go through a variety of issues from a Motorola Nexus to Apple's "island-like approach" to its platform.

Lets start with the gossip about Apple! He said that Apple's "island-like approach was somewhat a shame for users." He said he though it:
"would be nice if everybody would get along better and the users didn't suffer as a result of other people's activities. I try to model that. We try pretty hard to make our products be available as widely as we can. That's our philosophy. I think sometimes we're allowed to do that. Sometimes we're not."
Page also had Android high on the agenda. He explained how he thought that availability and sharing were fundamental to the successes Android has seen. Naturally he linked Google Plus into that and said how Google had "18 different ways of sharing stuff before we did Plus. Now we have one way that works well, and we're improving." Google are also reportedly exploring ways of monetizing Android, Page said, " I think we're in the early stages of monetization. The fact that a phone has a location is really helpful for monetization."

Lastly, when probed about a Nexus device from Motorola, Page offered the simple answer that Google hasn't "owned the company long enough." Interestingly he doesn't pledge a Motorola Nexus but he said that Google plans to develop "amazing innovative devices" with it's wide range of partners. Whether these partners are new or old Google has pledged to keep them as happy as possible!

HTC announce the One SV: LTE on a budget!
HTC One SV coming to UK with LTE, Snapdragon S4, microSD slot

HTC's newest mid-range smartphone, the One V was not the runaway success it's Wildfire named predecessors were and the HTC One S was a relatively popular mid-range device. These two things and that lovely new LTE network from EE in the UK, may go some way to explaining that shiny new device pictured above!

This phone is the HTC One SV, a new LTE compatible phone with a solid amount of power for a mid-range handset. To start with there's a new 4.3-inch 480x800p LCD2 screen, Beats Audio, burst photography and a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. It'll be powered by the slightly ageing Android 4.0 and you'll be able to snap 5-megapixel images with f/2.0 lens, which can also record 1080p video. To round it off there's a microSD card slot, which is compatible with cards up to 32GB's and there's NFC too!

In other news:

  •  Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour was finally launched on the Google Play Store late last night. That was after a previous delay. Unfortunately it seems Gameloft has another problem with the game and it has been pulled from the Play Store once again. The best guesses of the interwebs are that it'll be back in the next couple of weeks! We'll keep you informed!

  • It seems iOS will have a new untethered jailbreak on December 22nd! It comes from a new dveloper called 'Dream JB', we've never heard of him before but everything looks legit on his site. Although, the world is supposed to end on December 21st so this could well be a very dedicated troll effort! We'll have to wait and see!
    Via Slashgear.
  • Hot on the heels of the subscription offered by UK newspaper, the Times, which came with a Nexus 7 at a lower price, the Financial Times is also offering a new deal. If you're willing to cough up for a Premium FT.com subscription that will set you back $446.50 for the year or the Newpaper bundle price will be $597.48, then you will get a complementary Nexus 7! Although, this is the 8GB model, which Google doesn't sell any more, but if you want some FT news and you want a Nexus 7, you could do worse!

  • Sony has launched a new app for all Android users called 'Xperia Lounge'. The app is pegged as a 'new entertainment application with exclusive content and competitions across different genres including music, film, gaming, and sports.'

The apps content will be limited though, with Xperia users getting access to all of the goodies; things such as live concerts and exclusive content from Coldplay! If you want to try the app you can get it here!
    Via Slashgear,
  • SkyGo for Android has finally been updated! The new version of the app works with the full list of devices you see below! It's also now compatible with all versions of Android from 2.2 to 4.2.1! (Excluding Honeycomb). If you want to start that streaming hit this link!

Rovio teases Bad Piggies! Available Sept. 27!

Rovio has had it's Pig-centric successor to Angry Birds in the cooker for quite a while now and it seems the game is nearly ready for release! The trailer above will give you a pretty good idea of the sort of game play we can expect to see, but Rovio has promised that Angry Birds and Bad Piggies gameplay will be 'complete opposites".

It's a lot more of a puzzle-based game this time and in the same way Amazing Alex is. You will have to build things to complete the objectives. But, it does seem that Bad Piggies takes it to the next level! Again this will have all the animated 2D charm of the previous games, but with the added fun of creating your own unique contraptions to guide the pigs through levels, collecting as many stars and eggs as possible!

If you need a new time killing game then put Thursday, September 27 in your diary! The app will be available on Android and iOS on that date and Windows Phone and PC are currently being worked on, but we don't have a release date for those at the moment!

Angry Birds sequel 'Bad Piggies' launching at the end of September!

How do you follow up one of the world's most successful gaming franchises? With a reversal of the original of course! That's exactly what Rovio has planned for their next instalment of birds vs pigs!

For this game the Angry Birds won’t be as present, and we've kept the pigs who’ve unfortunately been mistreated for the past few years and are seeking revenge! For those of you who love Angry Birds then mark Bad Piggies in your diary for September 27th when it'll hit Android and iOS.

Aside from this we don't know much about this new game, all we know is that there won't be 'any birds or slingshots in sight'.

In other news:

  • What better way to prepare for the launch of the iPhone 5, if your name is Samsung, than with the threat of with 434 LTE patents heading Apple's way?
  • Samsung's Galaxy S3 became the current top selling phone in the USA just knocking off the iPhone 4S ahead of Apple's refresh.
  • Just to ensure they're not missing from the September fun, HTC has said today that they will be holding an even on September 19th!!!
  • Apple has finally confirmed that their iPhone date is September 12th! Keep it locked for all the info!
  • Nokia have today come out on Twitter and rebuked claims that their 8MP PureView camera isn't good enough! We'll have to see if their theory matches practice.
  • 12m iPhone and iPad ID database hacked from FBI claims AntiSec!!!
And finally for those of you who thought big screens weren't popular well recent research has shown that Android's growth has centred around large screen phones!!!

HTC's rumoured tablet might be the HTC Vertex HD.

The device above is the rumoured HTC Vertex and it's slated to replace the ageing HTC Flyer and Jetstream. The device above has had a few specs leaked by the usual benchmarking websites; there's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor onboard. This device also appears to be working with a 10.1-inch display with HD resolution at WXGA 1280 x 800 pixels.

The cameras are currently appearing as a 2MP and 1MP back and front facing cameras. Although, we believe these are only temporary pieces of hardware and they'll likely be replaced before we hear anything official! There's some good connectivity options too; Bluetooth 4.0 is onboard, as is Beats Audio in two separate drivers.

This is something we're looking forward to seeing given HTC's short history of well built and appealing tablets!

In other news:

  • Next gen Kindles have reportedly been facing a few delays after issues with screen production and in particular their screen light settings.
