Samsung post up teaser for a Galaxy and Ativ launch event on June 20th!

Samsung already have a comprehensive line up of smartphones and tablets, but it seems as though they guys from South Korea aren't done showing us their wares just yet! That's why we've got news today that Samsung have scheduled an event which will “premiere” some new devices in their Galaxy and ATIV portfolio.

The event will be held on the 20th of June at Earls Court 2 in London, England and Samsung have been kind enough to offer a livestream on YouTube for people who are interesting in what they have to show us! That livestream will be up on their YouTube channel from 6pm BST/ 1pm ET/ 10am PT on the day and we'll link you to the event much nearer the time!

Samsung have given us the previews and teasers down below and we're hoping that they silvery-grey hues will mean a more metallic finish, but we're not going to get out hopes up! Take a look at the pictures and let us know what the pictures down below look like to you!

Is this the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0?

Samsung have already announced the 7" Galaxy Tab 3 and that device was rather uninspiring to say the least, but if we know Samsung they like to carpet bomb the market and hope that something hits a sweet spot. That's why we have seen this pop up on our Twitter feed today.

The device pictured above is what SamMobile believe is the 8" variant of the Galaxy Tab 3! We prefer saying it that way because Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 sounds a little silly! According to the guys this tablet is meant to arrive at the end of June and is set to feature slightly improved specs compared to its 7" sister!

There's meant to be Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in the driving seat, with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and support for MicroSD expansion up to 64GB under the hood. The outside of the device is rumoured to have a pair of cameras which SamMobile says are likely to be 1.3MP on the front and 5MP on the back which will offer up solid pictures for you to look through on the 8" WXGA, that's 1280 x 800p, TFT display.

Aside from that the rumour runs that there's a nice big 4450mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, WiFi and 3G connectivity options available and all of this is set to measure in at 209.3 x 122.2 x 6.95mm, the last of which is meant to be how thin this device is and that would be really quite impressive if correct!

SamMobile wanted to point out that their spec list isn't necessarily final, but given how specific they're being they're either very confident that this intel is right or they're remarkably good at plucking numbers out of the air!

More rugged Galaxy S4 details are discussed as Samsung extend warranties in Africa and they announce their Q1 earnings!

This is a bit of a mish-mash this post because there's been a fair bit of news about Samsung and their devices today, but it's all about various different things and there's not really an obvious way to clump it all together!

The best place to start is with a little update to the news we brought you yesterday that Samsung are rumoured to be working on a 'rugged' Galaxy S4. Well the Wall Street Journal have waded in with their opinion of the phone today and they have said that the rugged version of the phone is being tentatively labelled as the Glaxy S4 Active at the moment. According to their sources the device is looking good for a July release, but the WSJ didn't offer any details about possible carriers or countries of availability.

The WSJ also mention that there are a few more devices coming to the Galaxy line-up soon too! The paper explicitly mentioned a new 8" tablet is on the horizon, something which will be an intermediate device to the 7 and 10.1" tablets which will also be on offer. They also said that there is a Galaxy S4 Mini in the works and that will land in July with a 4.3" display!

The second part of today's news is that Samsung have announced some extended warranties for some African countries which we would love to see offered in our neck of the woods! Samsung have announced a new accidental damage warranty which gives you two free accidental repairs on anything! The offer is available in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zambia, Mauritius, Uganda, Cote d’Ivorie, Angola, Botswana, and Mozambique. The deal is easy to take advantage of, all you need to do is make sure you register your Samsung device as soon as you buy it! Obviously after your two free accidental repairs you'll have to cough up the money to fix the phones yourself and there's a chance this warranty will be offered on a larger amount of Samsung's portfolio in the future!

And finally, Samsung have announced their Q1 earnings results and it's looking pretty rosy overall for the Korean giants, but there's a little bit of a slow down. For example Sammy reported an nice big net profit increase of $6.4 billion, but that came with more of a slow down in growth, which is in part because of their competition on the mid and low-end phone markets. Let's not be under any illusions though, this is still a 42% growth year on year, if we compare it to the sales from Q1 2012.

As you would probably have expected Samsung is building this growth from sales of their smartphones, with the only real competition coming from Apple at the moment. Samsung weren't prepared to offer up any exact numbers today, but people guess that Samsung shipped somewhere near 70 million devices in Q1 something which helped the company to a new high in earnings. They earnt 7.15 trillion won, which was up from 7.04 trillion Q4 2012!
Again the key area for Samsung was phones where they generated nearly three quarters of their profit from! The only bit of bad news for the company is possibly that they're struggling to get Galaxy S4's out of the factories at the moment, well at a rate which meets demand anyway, with . We expect Samsung to meet demand soon enough, but their fortunates are pinned heavily on the success of their mobile phones!

Wolfson announce a 'multi-year' agreement to become Samsung's primary audio partner in smartphones and tablets!

Last Thursday Samsung and the British company Wolfson penned a multi-year agreement which will see Wolfson become the primary audio partner for Samsung's extensive range of smartphones and tablets!

The likelihood is that if you may not have even know that Wolfson were behind the audio in your current Galaxy smartphone. If you have either the Samsung Galaxy S III, Note II or Note 10.1 then you'll have already experiences Wolfson's audio wizardry.

LandOfTechnology notes that, "Wolfson holds a lot of patents in mobile technology and this new deal... suggest[s] the companies will share insight into developing new tech," hopefully making the deal mutually beneficial. On top of this the guys reported that Wolfson are now well on the way to meeting their revenue target of £150 million for this year, a year on year growth of some 26%!

Naturally Mike Hickey, Wolfson's CEO, said:
“This is a significant milestone for Wolfson, and we are delighted to be making this announcement. Having worked closely with Samsung over recent years on their GALAXY range of tablets and smartphones, this agreement is a testament to our strong IP portfolio and our growing partnership, and we very much look forward to working closely together to continue to deliver exceptional audio in Samsung’s smartphones and tablets.”

The news in brief:

  • RIM has announced that carrier testing for their BB10 devices will begin in approximately A months time. So the company is on for a 2013 release! The company has also announced that they will have native support for Twitter, Facebook, Four square and many more social platforms from launch!
  • Google has announced that any work on a version of iOS6 maps until they get a special invite from Apple to do the work. Eric Schmidt said it was up to Apple whether the iPhone 5 and other devices would get Google maps. Schmidt said that Google would "welcome" Apple's cooperation but said that "we have not done anything yet" to prepare a new version, so looks like you'll have to make do with iOS maps guys.
  • Apple A6 teardown reveals the chip has a dual-core CPU and a tri-core GPU configuration.
  • Apple have also announced today that scratches on their aluminium backed iPhone 5 are 'normal' and should be expected. Are you going to let Apple sell this excuse to you as a sign of uniqueness?
  • Today some of Samsung's Galaxy series of phones, particularly ones which had been 'Touchwiz-ed' were found to be vulnerable to a simply html code which would automatically reset the phone. The issue currently affects the Galaxy Beam, S Advance, Galaxy Ace, and Galaxy S II. However, the Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus, which runs stock Android, is not susceptible. Neither is Samsung's latest beast, the Galaxy S3. “The USSD code issue in the SGS3 is patched, and has been for some time” TeamAndIRC said. “Current i747 [AT&T Galaxy S III] and i9300 [European Galaxy S III] firmware are not vulnerable.”

Samsung has yet to comment on 'dialer-gate' but good things come to those who wait! We'll keep you updated.
  • The Samsung Galaxy Note II is launching in the UK on October 1st.
And finally, here's a lovely little video from RIM explaining why they love their devs! It's kinda catchy!
