Samsung gives away a few more Tizen details: 'The best product equipped with best specifications' promised!

We've already seen Samsung's Android-based flagship, the Galaxy S4, but we haven't really heard much about the plans for the Tizen platform. There has been repeated rumblings about a phone coming this year running the software, but now Samsung has a little bit more detail to add to that!

In an interview with Bloomberg, Samsung's executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, Lee Young Hee, said that:
“The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category... The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications.”
One of everyone's biggest concerns with another new operating system will be whether or not there will be enough apps for everyone to get their teeth into! This fear has seemingly been allayed by the Tizen Association's Chase Perrin, who said that there will be 'thousands' of apps to choose from when the software launches, he added:
“Android, among other mobile operating systems, is tightly controlled... As an open-source software platform, Tizen is designed to make it easy to develop for a range of devices.”
Android is seemingly the operating system which is most at risk here, with Bloomberg's report quoting Strategy Analytics January report saying:
"Android’s challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, BlackBerry, Firefox and Tizen."
What do you think? Are you interested in a Tizen powered super phone or is it Android, iOS and Windows Phone from here on out?

Samsung confirm Bada will merge into Tizen!

Samsung has announced that Bada will have a future, but it'll be living on through a merger with Intel and Nokia's Meego, which is now called Tizen. The Verge have quoted Yonhap reports which say that Samsung's Media Solutions Centre President, Hong Won-Pyo, claimed that Bada's app support will be embedded into Tizen so there will be some life in the small ecosystem which has been built around Bada.

Despite the app integration, it will not be possible to upgrade a phone which currently runs Bada to the new wonders and excitement of Tizen. The justification for this is that:
"Rather than seeing this as a straightforward merger, it's better to view it as a transition to a better service."
At the moment we haven't got any devices to show this app support off on yet, but we will get to see the first fruits of Samsung's and Intel's labour 'within the year' when  the first bunch, or should we say 'Wave' (sorry) of Tizen devices come out.

Naturally if and when we hear about Tizen-powered devices you guys will know soon after!

03/01/2013: Nexus 4 production numbers, Samsung to focus on Tizen more? Blackberry Z10 pictured and much more!

Serial numbers suggest that only 375,000 Nexus 4's have been made!

The Nexus 4 has been a widely popular device since it launched because of the ridiculously low retail price which Google sells it for in the Play Store. The only problem is is that you probably won't be able to get hold of the Nexus 4 unless you purchase it from a carrier, seemingly they have been getting priority over Play Store sales. So with that in mind we are not that surprised to see some number crunchers over on XDA work out that a mere 375,000 Nexus 4's have actually been made!

The way this has been worked out is by using the Nexus 4 serial codes which a user on XDA noticed. How it works is that each device starts with three numbers and a letter, for example 212K. In this example the first number is the year, 2012, the second and third digits relate to the month the device was made and finally the letter, K in this case, is where the device is made, so K would be Korea, C would be China and so on.

This has allowed us to work out a very precise figure for the amount of devices which have actually been produced. So in October LG produced 70,000 Nexus 4 devices, in November there were 90,000 made and then in December production finally improved with 210,000 made. Now this is not a reflection of sales or indeed demand, but it's a good approximation of production and it explains why the Play Store is out of stock a lot of the time! We'll have to wait and see how many LG churn out in January, but hearing things like this will undoubtedly leave users annoyed.

Samsung confirm Tizen phones will be coming and probably more than one of them!

Samsung has confirmed to Bloomberg that they plan to release multiple Tizen powered devices this year, something which Bloomberg says is because Motorola is now in the hands of Google!

   One of Samsung's spokespeople said:
“We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the line-up depending on market conditions.”
This doesn't mean that Samsung will be stepping away from Android; their Galaxy range is insanely popular, the way we see it is that Samsung is looking to diversify their options. Tizen is a great option to run with in this regard because it's development is backed by both Intel, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone so Samsung automatically has launch partners and some support should they need it.

On the device front NTT DoCoMo has supposedly agreed a deal to launch a Tizen smartphone in the near future if you believe the Japanese newspaper rumours. The other advantages of running Tizen powered phones is that Samsung will not have to update their Android devices as Google releases new software, instead they can work in the same way Microsoft, Apple and Amazon do and issue software updates when they're ready, rather than when Google dictates they should.

What do you think? Are you interested in a Tizen phone?

Is this the Blackberry Z10?

The image above is reportedly a picture of the upcoming Blackberry Z10 posing next to a iPhone. The device on the left is reportedly the Verizon version and if you look very closely you can see the branding in the top left of the device and the one on the right is the AT&T version.

Business Insiders' source also offered up their opinions on the new device saying:
  • The build quality is really nice. The back cover feels rubbery and snaps on sort of like the back cover on Samsung's Galaxy S III.
  • The screen looks great.
  • The web browser is very quick, just as fast as a desktop browser. It also supports Flash.
  • You can set up separate profiles for work and personal use. This is good for people who want to use one phone for business and play.
  • It integrates with Evernote.
  • The new AppWorld store looks a lot like the Google Play store for Android apps.
  • It only takes one minute to boot up.

We're certainly intrigued by the look of the new device, but we have a feeling Apple might have something to say about the similarities between it and their iPhone. The addition of a removable battery is a very nice touch and is great for business and heavy users, the only thing to do now is wait until the end of the month for the full details!

In other news:

  • Apple have issued a statement about the 'Do Not Disturb' bug. Apple said that "After January 1, do not disturb mode stays on past its scheduled end time. The do not disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the do not disturb feature on or off." So that's four more days before the feature will be back working, which is a rather large pain if you use it all the time! Sorry guys!

  • Asus and Leap have partnered to bring the latter's motion-control software to the formers upcoming computer range. There's not currently any word on how much these computers could cost but we have a feeling they're not going to be a budget option!

And finally, O2 is having a bit of a Winter sale at the moment and they have some relatively cheap deals by their standards. For example you can pick up a 24 month contract with Unlimited Texts and Minutes and a whole gigabit of data for £26 a month. With that you can have your choice of Sony Xperia T for free or a Samsung Galaxy S3 for £99. There's also discounts on other things such as Sony Xperia J, Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and the HTC Desire X. Head over to the O2 website for full details. Although if you're interested in the Xperia T we recommend getting 2000 minutes and unlimited texts and internet from T-Mobile instead for £26 a month!

Is HTC planning a wholesale price cut to regain market share?!

Everyone knows that HTC prides themselves on high quality, well made devices! It was this belief that made HTC one of the most popular Android manufacturers up until the last year. Something happened then, no one really knows why though. Perhaps it was good devices that weren't particularly inspiring or perhaps Samsung and Apple have just been a completely relentless march!

Either way today's rumours have suggested there will be a fightback from HTC! And what better way to get some mind share and some more market share back too than a price cut! That's exactly what the Chinese rumour mill has blurted out today! Apparently these cuts will run deep too; all of their current One Series devices will reportedly get discounted, as will the upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices.

This is actually a fantastic plan from the company, people will be swayed away from Samsung phones and hopefully people will get HTC-envy again!

In other news:
  • Samsung has announced that work on Bada will now end and Tizen phones will be pushed back into 2013! There's no official line on why yet but the company may just prefer to focus on securing Android market share!
  • Facebook has announced that their data grows by 500 Terabytes daily! That is a lot of new servers that they'll be buying!
  • Not too long ago Twitter cut Instagram off from the friend finding service and now a second major service has been cut off by twitter. Blogging platform Tumblr has had its friend finding privileges ended by twitter.
  • Sony Mobile announced today that it would be restructuring operations and development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden, and Beijing, China. That includes lay offs of up to a thousand people in Sweden!
  • Qualcomm have announced that they'll be collaborating with LG as they gear up to release their Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. This "global device" that the pair are working on will include an Adreno 320 GPU along with support for "higher HD resolution displays".The whole thing will rock 4G LTE connectivity and will be showing up in Korea in September to begin with before coming to the rest of the world thereafter.
  • Everyone knows game piracy on PC is a big issue but according to outspoken Ubisoft the piracy rate on their games is somewhere in the region of 93-95% of the games users!

And finally, for the first time in 25 years Microsoft has updated their company's logo. The fruits of the 25 years of work looks like this!

JollaMobile plans to give Meego the chance it deserves!

Now many of you out there may have heard of Nokia and their much heralded N9. The N9 was the first, and only, smartphone to run Meego; a pleasant little OS which was widely described as a 'breath of fresh air' when it was shown off last year. Meego itself took the best of Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin operating systems and merged them into one complete package specifically designed for ease of use and elegance.

Despite the N9 introducing beautiful industrial design and a great new OS, there was a problem and his name was Stephen Elop. You may know him as the man who was responsible for ending his company's work on Symbian, Meego and, the all but complete, Meltemi. Instead he jumped straight into the arms of his ex-employer, Microsoft and their little OS, Windows Phone 7.

As you can probably tell, I personally am a fan of diversity; Firefox OS, WebOS, Meego, Tizen, Bada, BB10/QNX and the like, are all great operating systems but they're either being created as we speak or have been all but archived after poor initial sales (yes HP we're looking at you).

But, in the face of adversity a team of ex-Nokia employees have created a small start up called Jolla and they plan to create their 'Own hardware and own OS based on ‪#MeeGo‬'. The software will be able to run on both ARM and X86 processors so, in theory, there's quite a range of products this company could come out with, but they've made it clear that their initial focus is smartphones.

The only problem is that the company has doesn't currently have any products to show off; they're working on something for release later this year, but it's been made clear on their Twitter page that they have investors and they are looking at possibilities such as Kickstarter to get the company off the ground.

This is a very interesting project and only time will tell if the company can build on the solid foundation laid by Nokia and Intel, but I have my fingers crossed for them!

Ohh, for the record the name isn't pronounced the way you expect; it's spelt Jolla but the company has said 'it should be said with a sharp 'z' in the beginning, like 'zholla' or 'tjolla'!

In other news:

  • Samsung has all but confirmed they are planning to launch a Windows RT tablet in the fall.
  • Torsten Heins, RIM's CEO has explained his company's decision to delay BB10 saying that he could 'still see the seams' and he wanted the OS to be flawless.
  • Blackberry's app world has hit 3 billion downloads.
  • Hot on the heels of HTC's win against Apple in the UK courts, the same decision has been reached  regarding Samsung tablets... Not Guilty!!! So head out and buy all the Galaxy Tab's you want, you lucky Brits!
  • A new Kindle Fire has been tipped for Q3 with a 1280x800, Nexus 7 matching, display.
  • LG are reported to be using a bit more in house production as they seek to regain some smartphone market share.
  • US mobile carriers were asked over 1.3million times for information about their customers by law enforcement agencies in the US of A!!!
  • Nokia has today confirmed that there will be a Windows Phone for Verizon 'very soon' and the same timescale has been applied to the release of Nokia phones with 'Pureview' camera technology.
  • Ohhh and that exploding Samsung Galaxy S3, turns out it was microwaved, that's why it exploded! The things people will do to get attention these days!

HTC planning a Tizen powered device for 2012.

Since the departure of Nokia from their ex-partner Intel, their love child, Meego, was expected to be somewhat neglected. But, it wasn't long before Samsung, amongst many others, picked up the buck and started building Tizen.

The news here is that HTC will be releasing a phone at some point in 2012 running the software. This is great news for the platform, especially if the rumours that Asus and Acer will be creating phones running this software too before the end of the year pan out. It's become apparent that the platform has been gaining a lot of support from elsewhere too, with the Tizen Association board members now featuring NTT docomo, Orange, Vodafone, SK Telecom, NEC, Panasonic and Telefonica, amongst others.

It looks like Windows Phone may very well have a serious challenger for Third spot in the mobile world if the companies follow through on their word!

In other news:

  • Apple has once again filed for a ban of the Samsung Galaxy Tab in America, so much for sitting down and talking it out eyyy Apple?
  • Foxconn has announced they're spending $210million on a new production line for Apple products.
  • Microsoft has unleashed an updated SDK for Kinect on Windows, it's now version 1.5 of the SDK.
  • Facebook shares are already down to $33.60 per share, it's harsh to call this bad news, but the Facebook bubble hasn't been quite as huge as expected.
  • HTC has been able to trickle some of their devices out today after they were halted by US customs for infringing on dialer patents. The issues have since been addressed but the hold up is because every device has to be checked to prove it's bee updated, which as you can imagine is quite a slow process.
  • Samsung's S-voice apk has recently been leaked by XDA developers but Samsung and Vlingo have teamed up to stop you using it unless you really are rocking a Galaxy S3, sorry guys.
  • Google Chrome is once again the world's most popular browser and this time it'll probably stick!
  • And finally Happy 7th birthday Youtube! You have revolutionised our online experience!
