Syrian Electronic Army hack Sky's Google Play and Twitter accounts over the weekend: Apps still not back!

Over the weekend Sky have been having a few issues with their Google Play account and their Twitter accounts, both of which were hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army. Both of these hacks come just days after ITV had their accounts hacked by Anonymous just days after Twitter brought in two step verification to try to prevent this sort of hack!

Sky spoke with PocketLint over the weekend and confirmed some of the issues which they had been having. It turns out that the hack of their Google Play account, aside from displaying some pictures of the Syrian Electronic Army's pictures, didn't have any negative affects for their customers and the Tweet which they issued on Sunday, which read, 'We are aware that the Android apps of Sky+, Sky News were hacked and replaced... please remove the apps if you are already installed it.' It turns out that this wasn't actually the case and Sky said that "Sky Android apps previously downloaded by Sky customers are unaffected and there is no need to remove them from Android devices."

Apparently the Google Play hack was emphasised by the SEA as they took over Sky's Twitter account. The hack seems to have achieved some disruption with Google removing all Sky apps for the moment and so they're not available for download, but the apps should be back online at some point in the relatively near future.

Twitter launch their #Music service!

The last few weeks seem to have been dominated by rumours! We've already seen the rumours of Archos smartphones be confirmed and it seems Twitter's much discussed music service has sprung into life too!

The new service is called "Twitter #music" and it can be used online and via a new iPhone app (which you can get here). The whole idea of #music is to allow you to find new music which is popular on Twitter and to find new songs from bands which you already follow on Twitter.

Screenshot of the 'Popular' tab on the
iPhone app.
Twitter  took a good decision to integrate the #music features with the streaming services Rdio, Spotify and iTunes. This means that if you have a Rdio or Spotify account you can listen to the whole song for free, but those of you with iTunes can only hear a snippet!

According to ABC News the app for iPhone has a nice "clean and polished design," which features four navigation tabs; Popular, Suggested, Emerging and #NowPlaying. Popular obviously
gives users an overview of what's erm popular, Suggested offers you recommendations based on people you follow, Emerging gives you an overview of people which are undiscovered and #NowPlaying lets you see what  friends are listening to or posting on their twitter feed.

Twitter announced that both the iPhone app and online service will be available today in the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. An Android app is reportedly in the works, as is wider country availability!service will expand to Android as well as to more countries later on.

This all seems to be well thought out, but what do you guys think? Is this the sort of thing the music industry needs or what you need? Let us know in the comments below! If you want to check out the online version of the service then head here!

HTC won't be 'quietly brilliant' any more: Aggressive marketing on the way!

Back in November of last year HTC knew that they were in a little bit of a rut. Their One series had sold alright, but it was being eclipsed by Samsung's Galaxy S3 sales and things needed a little bit of a shake up. Since then we've come quite a long way: we've not got the HTC One knocking around, yes in limited quantities, but we'll come to that later. HTC couldn't see too much of a problem with their devices and they thought and still think that they are missing out on sales because of Samsung's huge marketing budget. As a direct result of that HTC hired Mr. Benjamin Ho to be their new marketing chief.

It turns out he's been quite busy behind the scenes since then and he discussed some of what he's been up to with the Wall Street Journal. The first and most significant change is going to be the removal of the 'quietly brilliant' slogan. It's quite an iconic catchphrase similar to, but not quote as potent as, Nokia's old 'connecting people' phrase. The way he justified the change is that, “We have a lot of innovations but we haven’t been loud enough,” so essentially he is hoping that he will last slightly longer than his predecessors with a more up and at 'em approach!

In fact we've already seen some of his ideas come to life already. Some of you might remember our piece which summed up HTC's take on the Galaxy S4 announcement, where Ho himself called Samsung's new flagship 'more of the same' and HTC took to Times Square to hand out promotional material for the HTC One, amongst other things. HTC were also quite aggressive on their social media pages, especially on Twitter where they deployed the hashtag #TheNextBigFlop!

Ho also discussed how HTC would bump up their digital marketing budget by 250% over last year's effort and traditional media marketing will increase by 100% so we should start seeing HTC One ads popping up left, right and centre. Don't forget as well that HTC have signed that Champions League sponsorship deal, so you football fans out there you will be seeing that for the next few seasons!

As a passing note Ho confirmed that the shipping delays of the HTC One are because of problems getting the cameras built for the device, saying, “There is some shortage, because the phone’s camera was designed specifically for us, and production cannot be ramped up so quickly.”

  • Blackberry confirm that in the seven weeks since BB10 launched there is now 100,000 apps for the platform! Not bad going at all and in the coming weeks that number is set to be bolstered by the arrival of CNN, The Daily Show Headlines, eBay, eMusic, Maxim, MLB at Bat, MTV News, Pageonce, PGA, Rdio, Skype, Soundhound and Viber!

  • SamMobile believe that Samsung are busy working on Super Amoled displays for tablets! • @EVLeaks believe that this is the new Huawei G700. If the guys are on the mark then this is set to have a quad-core Mediatek processor, a 5" HD display and is set to run Android 4.2!
  • The UK retailer Clove has today priced up the Sony Xperia E and the Blackberry Q10! The Xperia E is set to cost £129.99 including VAT, but Blackberry's all-qwerty offering is going to cost a whopping £534.99. To give some perspective on that, that's £5 more than the cheapest iPhone and it'll be in the same ballpark as the Samsung Galaxy S4 when that is released!
    Via Clove (1) and (2).
  • According to Digitimes, HTC is set to open up “330 experimental shops” and “53 large-scale exclusive stores” in Taiwan through this year in a bid to promote their new One flagship! If that's true the implication is that for every 60,000 people in Taiwan there will be a HTC store! If we compare that to Apple in America, there are 250 Apple stores in the USA and with 314 million people then you have 1,256,000 people per store. Perhaps HTC could spend their money slightly more economically?

  • Today Twitter have updated their app for Windows Phone. There's a sweet little redesign to go along with new Live Tile options and new search and tweet buttons which are now ever presents in the app. You can also expect to get:
"New navigation. Four new tabs – Home, Connect, Discover and Me – bring you closer to the things you care about.
Home: View Tweets from the accounts you follow; tap a Tweet to expand it and see more content, such as photos, videos and website summaries.
Connect: Keep up with your mentions; see who has followed you or retweeted or favorited one of your Tweets.
Discover: See trends, and find new content on Twitter –– browse categories, find friends on Twitter and see suggestions for accounts to follow.
Me: Read and respond to your direct messages; see your lists, favorites and more; view and update your profile." Twitter Via Slashgear.

  •  LG have added the new 'VR Panorama' feature to their Optimus G Pro. This is essentially a knock off of Google's Photosphere, but that doesn't stop it being cool!
    Via AndroidCentral.
  • New research from NPD suggests that illegal downloads aren't anything like the problem they were a few years back! The research indicated that peer-to-peer (P2P) usage declined 26% in 2012 compared to a year earlier, the total amount of people illegally downloading music dropped 17%, that old tradition of sharing CDs at family gatherings was down by a huge 44% and music sharing through hard and flash drives was down 25%! So why are record labels still complaining? Well it turns out the Spotify and streaming services seem to be making all the difference with users opting for the free, legal option instead!
    Via Slashgear.
And finally, there's been a lot of issues lately with Twitter's 100,000 user token limits and Falcon Pro is the latest app to be smacking up against Twitter's limit! So Falcon's developer, Joaquim Verges, has taken the decision to raise the price of the app to $132.13 (£87.46) to discourage people from buying the app! If you check the Play Store listing now you will be greeted with this in the description:
** ATTENTION PLEASE READ THIS **
** TOKEN LIMIT REACHED – DO NOT BUY – WORKS ONLY FOR ONLY FOR EXISTING USERS **
** THE APP WILL NOT ACCEPT NEW USERS BECAUSE OF TWITTER LIMITATIONS (100k tokens max) **
Help me Extend the access token limit by signing this petition :http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/extend-falcon-pro
And Please RELEASE your access token from the Twitter settings on the web if you’re not using the app anymore.
Twitter aren't happy with people developing apps for their system, they want users to use the official app. That doesn't mean that they are right, but that's why the limit is there in the first place. If you want to help out the dev you can either release your token so someone else can use it or sign the petition in the quote above!

16/11/2012: Google and Dish planning a mobile network? Apple drops Jelly Bean from lawsuits, Black Ops 2 sales figures and more!

Google preparing to make a mobile network with Dish Mobile.

In the past we've heard mumbling that both Google and Apple would be preparing to launch their own mobile networks to run their devices on. Today the former has been tipped, by the Wall Street Journal, to be speaking discussion with Dish the possibility of creating a mobile carrier service of their own. However, before we get into it the Wall Street Journal immediately warned that any talks were not “advanced” and that they “could amount to nothing.”

Rumours of a new HTC phablet grow!

There have been rumours about HTC making a challenger to Samsung's self-invented 'phablet' market for quite a while now. But, everything had gone quite quiet on that front until the rumours were reignited today by a pair of tweets from @EVleaks and @Football4PDA.

Is HTC planning a wholesale price cut to regain market share?!

Everyone knows that HTC prides themselves on high quality, well made devices! It was this belief that made HTC one of the most popular Android manufacturers up until the last year. Something happened then, no one really knows why though. Perhaps it was good devices that weren't particularly inspiring or perhaps Samsung and Apple have just been a completely relentless march!

Either way today's rumours have suggested there will be a fightback from HTC! And what better way to get some mind share and some more market share back too than a price cut! That's exactly what the Chinese rumour mill has blurted out today! Apparently these cuts will run deep too; all of their current One Series devices will reportedly get discounted, as will the upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices.

This is actually a fantastic plan from the company, people will be swayed away from Samsung phones and hopefully people will get HTC-envy again!

          In other news:
          • Samsung has announced that work on Bada will now end and Tizen phones will be pushed back into 2013! There's no official line on why yet but the company may just prefer to focus on securing Android market share!
          • Facebook has announced that their data grows by 500 Terabytes daily! That is a lot of new servers that they'll be buying!
          • Not too long ago Twitter cut Instagram off from the friend finding service and now a second major service has been cut off by twitter. Blogging platform Tumblr has had its friend finding privileges ended by twitter.
          • Sony Mobile announced today that it would be restructuring operations and development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden, and Beijing, China. That includes lay offs of up to a thousand people in Sweden!
          • Qualcomm have announced that they'll be collaborating with LG as they gear up to release their Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. This "global device" that the pair are working on will include an Adreno 320 GPU along with support for "higher HD resolution displays".The whole thing will rock 4G LTE connectivity and will be showing up in Korea in September to begin with before coming to the rest of the world thereafter.
          • Everyone knows game piracy on PC is a big issue but according to outspoken Ubisoft the piracy rate on their games is somewhere in the region of 93-95% of the games users!

And finally, for the first time in 25 years Microsoft has updated their company's logo. The fruits of the 25 years of work looks like this!

Amazon recruits 5,000 UK corner shops for new delivery option!

For once it's not mobile phone or tablet news that gets the big story here on TTF. This time it's Amazon and a rather big announcement for our UK readers. Most of us here in the UK shop on Amazon for cheap books if your a student, birthday and christmas presents if you're a parent or maybe you shop there because you need something to splash the cash on.

Either way you probably get the item delivered to your house, but then you're not always in are you and the lovely postman puts this little red slip through your post box saying you weren't in (shocker) and that you have to go to your local depot at obscure times to collect your parcel.

Well, Amazon has heard the problem and has enlisted the help of local shops for a new scheme called CollectPlus. At the moment the scheme is in the trial phase, but it's widely expected to pass with flying colours. Essentially at the check out you will pick CollectPlus, choose your shop to deliver to and a couple of days later you can pop in on your lunch break and get your parcel. Perfect!

Obviously this scheme has those people who work 9-5 firmly in mind because everyone knows the hassle of trying to collect undelivered parcels when you work! This will let you collect them at lunch or, if your shop is open late into the evening, the chance to pick it up after work!!!

And if it turns out you don't like your item simply take it back to the shop and CollectPlus will return it! It's such a great idea it's hard to believe no ones thought of it before! This is definitely something useful for UK residents and hopefully we'll see it very soon!

Lenovo announces the LePhone K860 with a well ticket spec sheet!

The image above is a picture of the upcoming Lenovo phone K860 "Music Phone" LePhone. On the surface this thing is looking like a not so little beast!

On board there's a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 chip, Mali-400MP GPU, 5-inch (1,280 x 720) display, 1GB of RAM and all of this inside a 9.6mm-thick chassis which makes this one pretty little device. On top of these there's an 8-megapixel snapper with support for 100 frames continuous shooting and 1080p video recording, in addition to the 2-megapixel camera around the front.

Just in case you were worried all of those would kill your battery you need not because Lenovo will supply you with a 2,250 mAh cell to help keep you going. This will all be running on Android 4.0.4 too!

Unfortunately we don't currently have any word on price or availability, but in the meantime Samsung might have something coming to take your mind off of this one!

          In other news:

          • The guys over at XDA have once again done what HTC deemed impossible, by creating a version of ICS (Android 4.0.4 to be precise) for the Desire HD. This is a ROM built off the official ROM for the Incredible S. Head over to XDA if you need some Sense 3.6 in your life!
          • Acer has managed to push themselves into the positions as the world's third biggest computer manufacturer! And with such an honour comes a very small little profit; $14.5million to be exact. Not much but a lot better than most!
          • If you're as hyped about Black Ops 2 as we are here at TTF then you'll be needing some BO2 customised Turtle Beaches for all your sound whoring. If that's the case and you feel an upgrade is required then head over to Engadget to get the round up on the incoming releases!
          • And just in case we needed any more confirmation that Windows RT tablets would be a cheaper option, Lenovo's , David Schmoock, Senior VP of Lenovo's North American division, said to Bloomberg that full-on Windows 8 tablets would set you back between $600 and $700, whereas ARM-based Windows RT slates would sell for $200 to $300 less. "RT will play in consumer and retail at very aggressive price points," he said.
          • Twitter has begun locking down their API by giving unofficial Twitter apps 100,000 unique user tokens and for any app that exceeds that will require special permission from Twitter themselves. Twitter obviously wants to push you to use their official app the same way you use Facebook's own app. This one might not be for the best though.
          • Sony has explicitly denied that there will be any price cuts on their PS Vita console inside 2012, sorry guys no cheap christmas presents here!
          • Google Play giftcards are on the way! If you're a US reader your local Target or other similar store might have a box of them ready to go! Look out for more news as it happens!
          • Sony have started pushing Android 4.0 to Xperia P owners, if you've got an Xperia U or another NXT series device hold tight there's more of that sandwich coming soon.

Android updates: LG, Sony and Acer's hands.

Android updates; the bane of many geeks lives! Some companies have good records in updates; Samsung, Acer and HTC are considered 'good' with updates. Other companies are slightly lacking with their track records.

Today some of these ideas have been reinforced. The first company, Sony, we did cover briefly last week when they announced that they would not be providing Jelly Bean updates to their 2011 phones, like the Arc S and the Mini Pro. Sorry guys.

But, rest assured you're not alone! LG is just as bad as Sony, if not worse. LG's Canadian arm stated that versions of the Optimus 2X (the world's first dual-core phone!) and the Optimus Black would not receive an update to Android 4.0 ICS. This news coming in spite of a universal statement from LG promising the arrival of an update! There's no news on whether this will be the case for all international versions of these phones, but a precedent has now been set!

The good news here though is that Acer has publicly said that some of their Iconia range of tablets will get Jelly Bean. Yes they said 'some' and so a few tabs will miss out, but some is better than none!!! When the company outs a full list of updates, you guys will be first to know!

          In other news:

          • T-Mobile USA's Galaxy Note is available starting August 8th for $249 on a two-year contract.
          • Intel has promised that $699 ultrabooks are on the way!
          • Mountain Lion becomes OS X's most successful version yet with 3 million downloads so far.
          • Microsoft's Surface tablets have been slated to arrive on October 28th at the same time as Windows 8 is officially released.
          • Apple has been placed on China's Consumer Association “company integrity” blacklist, we're not sure what this will mean, but it's an interesting reflection of the world we live in!
          • Apple's supposed Twitter investment has apparently fallen through!
          • And finally, RIM's upcoming Playbook 10"er has supposedly been snapped and the leaked picture is below!

Benchmark again hints at a Nexus tablet.

The Google Asus Nexus 7 is Benchmarked

Early this morning the news broke that someone somewhere had noticed a listing on Rightware's Power Board benchmarking test. In 11th place was sitting a device under the name 'Nexus 7', which does appear to confirm rumours Google is creating a 7" device.

The listing also gives some hints about the rest of the specs inside this device; we have a quad-core Tegra3 processor, a 720p HD screen and it's supposedly running a software build named JRN51B which we expect is a build of Android 4.1 and more specifically this could be a Jelly Bean flavored build of Android.

With the device being tested daily by someone it looks like we might not have too long to wait!

Sony releases 2 new 'lifeproof' devices.

          Xperia Go.

The first of these two devices is the Xperia Go and as the name suggests it'll be prepare for most of what you throw at it. The device will arrive in the United States as the Xperia advance and it's the smaller of the two, with a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, 1GHz dual-core processor and a 5-megapixel camera. The good stuff however, starts here, the device be used when your fingers are wet, something most touchscreens definitely can't do, it meets the IP67 dust and water resistance standard, which is better than most ruggedized phones manage! Unfortunately, it also runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box, though Sony says there’s an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in the pipeline, strange that they can't do ICS straight from the off.

All of this comes along with 8GB of internal storage, USB Host support, a 1265mAh built-in battery and a microSD card slot. Twinned with 512MB of RAM and either triband or dualband UMTS/HSPA depending on where you reside. Sony will kindly give you 50GB of Box cloud storage if you choose to take the plunge before the end of the year; the Xperia Go is slated to hit shelves in three colours; black, white and yellow in Q3 2012.

          Xperia Acro S.

The second device is essentially the Xperia S in disguise, complete with a similar or probably the samet 4.3-inches (1280 x 720) screen which is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core and a 12-megapixel camera that Sony claims is ready to shoot in under a second.

The device is also PlayStation Certified and has 1080p HD video recording (although it's 720p from the front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera) and Ice Cream Sandwich is available from launch (woo!). Sony’s got some special camera tech on show here in the Exmor R variety, whatever that does?! You've got your usual assortment of HDMI, GPS, GLONASS, NFC and USB. Finally, it has a non-removanle 1910mAh battery pack and it has quadband HSPA+ connectivity.  It will be available in black, white and pink in Q3 2012.

          Google and Motorola deal completes!

Today Google has finally completed their acquisition of Motorola, after China approved the move yesterday afternoon. This is great news for the two companies and it will be great to see how Google can exercise an influence on Motorola and whether they get an unfair advantage over other Android manufacturers.

The other rumours today have been that Google may be planning to cut 40% of jobs at Motorola as they aim to streamline the company and turn a profit in the near future. There's no exact word on future plans but the press release states that the Motorola acquisition will help “supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing". Keep it locked here for the news as it happens.

Will.I.am seen tweeting while Olympic Torch carrying!

So this is kind of more fun than any real news, but The Voice judge and superstar rapper, producer and song writer Will.I.am was today a torch bearer for the London 2012 Olympics. But, the Black Eyed Peas co-founder took a slightly different angle on how to act while carrying the torch than the rest of the crowd so far.

             He took to his Blackberry Torch today to Tweet while he was carrying a big gold burning torch. His tweet said;
1nce in a life time experience  in the uK...

We're pleased you enjoyed it Will!!!

          Upcoming iPhone rumours pour out!

The last few days we've been hearing a lot about Apple's upcoming iPhone and what features it will and won't have. The main rumour is that Apple will up the size of the screen and the consensus is that this probably will happen.

Today the rumour has come from 9to5 mac that the screen will be a 3.95" display and it will have a new pixel ratio of 1136x640, which would usher in a new aspect ratio of 16:9, while maintaining the 'retina display' title, by keeping the pixel density well about 300pixels per inch.

9to5 Mac have also said that they expect the new iPhone to have an updated charging port which takes up less space at the base of the phone. The new port is rumoured to be slightly smaller than the MicroUSB standard
