5 UK ISP's order to block The Pirate Bay.

   Today Sky, Virgin, Everything Everywhere, O2 and TalkTalk have been ordered to block The Pirate Bay so their customers have absolutely no access to the site. The British Phonographic Industry has unsurprisingly dubbed this a monumental achievement saying that the court found TPB of infringing copyright on a 'massive scale'.

   Virgin unsurprisingly have today issued a statement saying they will comply with the decision, not that they had too much choice in that matter. The rest are yet to comment. The only thing I'm wondering is why exactly BT isn't on that list, especially after they set the precedent last year by blocking Newzbin2. 

   If any more comes out from the other companies this post will be updated with all the juicy details.

LG ditches Windows Phone to focus on Android.

   Those two phones above are now essentially collectors pieces, (well if you know anyone who collects phones that is! Probably a rather expensive hobby) because today LG has announced they will be refocusing their smartphone arm on Android.

   The company has pledged to continue doing R&D on Windows Phone but there won't be a new device released running the OS for the foreseeable future. The reason was essentially that they simply do not sell enough Windows Phone devices to turn a profit. And when your whole company is losing money it seems like a good ploy to refocus on the profitably pieces of your business.

   After today's announcement it was revealed that Steve Ballmer will be making a trip to Seoul to try to see what I can get from LG and probably to try to change their minds. Lg had reported strong sales of their LTE devices in their last earnings call... Something to learn from that Microsoft!

In other news:

• Microsoft and Barnes & Noble reported their new $300million deal today which would see the pair form a new subsidiary to compete in the future. Windows 8 Nook Tablets anyone?
• It has been widely reported today that RIM are behind the 'Wake Up' campaign which took place in Australia last week!
• LG Cloud has launched today to allow users to stream their HD content effortlessly between LG devices.

Which phone style is best?

Which phone style is best?

   Landscape qwerty slider, portrait qwerty slider, touchscreen slab, twisting, clamshell, qwerty no touch screen... there must be something I missed. There are so many different designs of phones available, but which one is best? 

   We know which ones sell the best at the moment; touchscreen slabs, such as the iPhone, Galaxy SII and HTC's One Series are what I mean by this category. But, I for one know miss the landscape qwerty keyboard from my old phone, the HTC 7 Pro even though I love the bigger screen of the Galaxy SII. (The HTC 7 Pro is pictured over to the right.) So what I'm going to do here is cover all of the pros and cons of each style of phone, using reviews from as recently as possible and if new devices aren't available in a certain style I will speculate whether the style is still relevant or if there's a gap in the market which manufacturers have overlooked.

Portrait QWERTY Sliders;

   This first category is what the Hp/Palm Pre series, the Blackberry Torch and the Dell Venue Pro fall under. These phones are widely regarded as for the professional market and designed more towards enterprise users who need to type out an email with accuracy and speed while retaining a grown-up and sophisticated look.

Pros:

• Good for fast accurate typing.
• Stylish.
• Best of touch screen and physical keyboards.

Cons:

• These sort of phones frequently tend to be in the mid-range in terms of specifications.
• There isn't much choice! The phones listed above are basically all of the phones available.
• Because of the keyboard and touchscreen this sort of phone tends to be on the chunky side.

Landscape QWERTY Sliders.

   These are the more popular version of phones with slide out QWERTY keyboards; things like Motorola's iconic Droid series (well Milestone if you like in the UK). These phones are widely regarded as being design for the type-aholics who always need to quickly type out a text or email.

Pros:

• Great for typing.
• Best of both worlds.
• Reasonable specs, particularly in Motorola's Droid line.

Cons:

• Limited choice if you want this sort of phone.
• Manufacturers are focusing on touchscreen only phones, HTC even said they will put this sort of phone aside for the time being.

Touchscreen Only!

   Touchscreen only phones are the biggest category here in terms of popularity amongst smartphone users and amount of different devices on offer. These are always companies flagship devices; things like the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S2 and of course the Apple iPhone define this category. You will likely have one of these in your pocket, or on your desk next to you as you read this!

Pros:

• High-end devices always carry the latest and greatest specs.
• Plenty of choice and stunning designs.
• Huge variety of sizes and specs to suit all budgets.
• Timely software updates because they tend top be flagship devices.

Cons:

• Sometimes hard to type accurately on.
• Everyone has one!

Twist phones:

   Now it has been a while since we've seen a genuine contender in this category and there's only two which come to me off the top of my head and they are the Sony Ericsson W550i and the Motorola Flipout. These phones are fun and iconic, and usually tailored towards the youth market.


Pros:

• Fun.
• Unique.
• Stylish

Cons: 

• Not any recent phones released in this style.
• Twisting mechanisms tend to wear out and become loose.
• Decidedly mid-range specifications.

QWERTY (+touchscreen):

   This section is basically dominated by the Blackberry range of phones who define the sector, with notable exceptions like the Motorola Droid Pro and Palm Pixi. These are obviously aimed at the sort of people who like to type messages and emails accurately and quickly, just like other keyboarded devices. But, nowadays with a smaller or no touchscreen this sort of device is starting to look dated.

Pros:

• Easy messaging options.
• Dedicated keyboard shortcuts.
• Generally solid devices.
• Great battery life because of the small screen and generally lower specs.

Cons:

• Look like a '90's throwback.
• No/ small touchscreen.
• Fewer apps.
• Generally lower specs.
• Blackberry or nothing generally.

Clamshell.

   Last but not least we have Clamshell phones. Now this is rather vintage design but their are good uses for it nowadays; for example the Dorophone for easy use.

Pros:

• Protects the screen within the design.
• Generally easy to use.

Cons:

• Outdated design.
• Not very practical for incorporating a touch screen.
• Lower specs.

Samsung denies organising the 'Wake Up' demonstration outside an Australian Apple Store.

   Yesterday evening there was big news reported around the interwebs that Samsung had staged a 'Wake up' promo aimed at what the company describes as iOS sheep, who simply buy Apple products because they want to be part of the 'cool crowd'.

   Today, however, Samsung has expressly denied having an involvement with this event. The specially labelled buses, the people with their signs and matching attire were all the work of someone else.... hmmmmmm. 

   I can't believe for a second a company wouldn't take credit if they had pulled this publicity stunt, and the suggestion it was Samsung yesterday seemed to fit in with their iSheep and their you don't need to wait in lines campaigns of the past. So perhaps someone is lying through their teeth or perhaps this is a human rights group trying to argue that Apple needs to take better care of it's production workers in China. Either way there is more to come out of this story and always you'll be the first to know!

So who is the world's biggest smartphone seller?

   That is a question you would think 'profession business analysts' would be able to answer. But, apparently not! It seems that there is a bit of disagreement within the industry as to who is actually the dominant force.

   Apple come straight o0ut and announced it had sold 35 million iPhones in Q1, whereas Sammy where a bit quiet in their earns call. The only information they would offer was that they sold 93.5million phones of both the feature and smart varieties.

   One firm called IHS suggested Samsung had shipped 32million smartphones but there was a rather large disagreement because 44.5million smartphones was the guestimate from Strategic Analysts. That difference is rather huge. Strategic Analysts cited the success of the Galaxy Note, S2 and the Galaxy Y for the huge growth in Samsung sales. So noone really knows.

   Either way we do now officially Samsung is the world's biggest mobile phone seller after stripping Nokia of that title this quarter as Nokia suffered another torrid season.

The Kindle Fire makes up 50% of the Android Tablet sales!!!

   Android tablets; every company makes 15 different versions and they still can't compete with the iPad. Or so goes the normal story. But, with tablets becoming ever more popular which Android tablet rules the roost? 

   The answer to that is the Kindle Fire made by Amazon! with a whopping 54% marketshare amongst Android tablets. And that ladies and gentlemen is the reason why Google are planning a 7" Nexus Tablet! Although, if we work on the technicalities the Kindle Fire runs a forked version of Android and doesn't include any of Google's core Android apps because Amazon has it's own answer to Google Play, The Amazon App Store. 

   So there we have it, to do well in the Android tablet world, you need one reasonably priced product that is well supported with updates... Really Android manufacturers how hard can it be?

In other news:

• Sony have started offering a $50 mail in rebate and a free cradle if you pick up their Tablet S which is now complete with ICS.
• Apple request approval for an off-campus restaurant for their workers, so they can eat without worrying about giving all the companies plans away.
• Sharp posted a $1.4billion loss this last quarter and blamed it's refocusing as a mobile LCD screen producer instead of TV production as the main reason for such abysmal results.

The iPad is the gateway into an iWorld.

   When it comes to Apple usually you're a fanboy, or you aren't. But, Apple continues to report larger and larger sales and they had a stellar Q1 despite analyst negativity. I've never really considered this but which device helps bring most people into the Apple ecosystem. the iPod always sells well, the iPhone maybe? That shiny new Macbook Pro which you got with your nephew's student discount? 

   The official research suggests that it is in fact the iPad which is the biggest inducer to Apple's world! While not wholly surprising because Apple has defined the tablet market, I personally didn't realise just how many the company sold compared to the rest of their tech line up. There's some quite interesting quotes from the research firms involved here, the most interesting is just here;

       “iPad sales are growing much faster than any other Apple product has this soon after launch,” Ben Arnold, director of industry analysis at NPD said of the study, which surveyed over 3,000 consumers in February this year. “In fact, one-in-five Apple owner households has one— nearly equivalent to the number that own an Apple computer. This demonstrates the appeal of both the new form factor and Apple’s app ecosystem.”

• Ubuntu 12.04 is available in the LTS form from today!
• Spotify are readying a Pandora challenger?
• It has all but been confirmed the Galaxy S3 is running on a quad-core Exynos chip, apart from the US version which is tipped to feature a dual-core Snapdragon processor.
• Sony Tablet S and Acer's A100+A500 received their ICS updates today!
• The Blackberry Playbook received a fully-working Playstation emulator today!

Sony Tablet S receiving ICS!

   Today Sony has come out and announced that they have released the Android 4.0 update for the Sony Tablet S. With this update you get the usual set of ICS updates and optimisations, but Sony also have a special treat for us Tablet S owners too!

   Sony has given the Tablet S a more desktop-style experience with the ability to bring some apps up as separate 'small app' windows. You can pin, minimize, maximize and dismiss apps as and when you need to. The Calculator, Browser and Remote control apps are amongst the apps which have these features already, and hopefully there is some more that can do this neat trick too! Other than this quite interesting addition all you're getting is a dose of very close to stock ICS.

   I have been repeatedly clicking 'check for update' on my Tablet S, but haven't had anything yet! Have you guys got your update? Let us know in the comments below. And don't forget to check out the Forum!

Microsoft extorting manufacturers now too!

   Microsoft; famous for Windows, Office and all things up to Windows Phone. All of these things make Microsoft money but so does the company's Intellectual Property (IP). It's newest patent licensee is Pegatron, a company who manufactures a whole slew of e-readers, tablets and phones, some of which run somewhat unsurprisingly run Android. Asus, Apple and HP are amongst their biggest customers. 

   I suppose if you're a Microsoft shareholder you're not going to scoff at the prospect of another revenue stream, but Microsoft please invest some of this IP money in making an amazing product or two!

Angry Birds Space has future plans to incorporate the Simpsons?!?!

   Angry Birds Space has been a runaway success since it's debut in March and today we saw an update with 10 more levels being added. BUT, we also were gievn the little teaser that you can see above. The suggestion here is that the Simpsons will be incorporated into the game.

   But, I previously reported how Rovio was planning to expand Angry Birds into a TV show and as such the Simpsons would be a great way to get the word about a new series out there, as well as being a great chance for a bit of mutually beneficial cross-branding.

In other news:

• Sprint announced a $255million loss for Q1 this year along with 1.5million iPhone sales, which is slightly disappointing given they went all in and blew their budget to get the iPhone last year.
• T-mobile Galaxy Nexus users in the USA you now have Google Wallet working!
• Apple's WWDC is scheduled for 11-15th June this year, so book up your tickets for San Fran!
• Hackstore available for OSX users, it's basically Cydia for your Macbook.
• Nokia delays the UK launch of the Lumia 900 from the 27th of April to the 14th of May reportedly because of 'large US demand'.
• The HTC One S is available for $200 on T-Mobile now, with a rebate of $50, go and grab your S4 powered monster now!
• Chrome for Android is reportedly leaving it's Beta stage in 'a matter of weeks'.

Google selling the Galaxy Nexus direct from the Play!

   Google has tried before to sell their Nexus devices direct to customers; the Nexus One was the first example and after a couple of months Google returned to a conventional sales route, through the carriers. But today Google has announced they are trying again.

   If you're a resident of the United States of America you can pick yourself up an Unlocked GSM (read AT&T and T-Mobile compatible) version of the companies flagship Android device. The price tag for your 'guaranteed' updates and pure Google experience is $399, so it's a pretty darn good deal. 

   Now if only Google could work something out to do this on my side of the pond for about £300 I would be there in a flash! It's still selling for £520 at the Carphone Warehouse (That's $840!!!!!)

Nokia finally pushes out tethering updates to Lumia 710 and 800.

   If you're the lucky owner of one of the two shiny devices above and you have a nice expensive data contract then today is your lucky day. Nokia has released updates to the Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800 which enable internet tethering! Wooo...

   It's hard not to feel like this should have been included from the off but at least it's here now! If you want the update then simply plug your phone into the computer, boot up Zune, click update and the rest will happen like clockwork (hopefully)!!!

• Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Windows operating system has been found to infringe on 4 of Motorola's patents, relating specifically to the use of H264 standard for videos.
• ZTE plans to release two 'phablet' devices this year to compete with the Galaxy Note and the LG Vu.
• AT&T's smartphone sales were dominated by the iPhone with 4.3million out of the 5.8million activations being brand spanking new iPhones.
• UK carrier O2 has been quick to just on the Galaxy S3 bandwagon and now joins Vodafone as the second UK wireless provider to announce they will have the phone. The Tweet is just below;
• Nokia got their credit rating slashed today amid concerns the company won't be able to turn their fortunes around too easily. Their rating has been downgraded to 'junk' by Fitch.
• There's another variant of Flashback affecting the Mac world this week. Just don't do anything silly and you should be fine!
• Facebook for Windows Phone has a huge new update incoming, something which is very overdue.
• HTC has announced they expect strong Q2 results after their new One series has been received 'very well'.
• Facebook has reached 900million users, so they're not far off 1 in 7 people on this earth having an account. Now we know where they got the money to buy Instagram!
• And finally, if we needed any more confirmation that the upcoming Galaxy S 'something' will be the Galaxy S3 then we need not look any further than Samsung's very own 'Unpacked 2012' app on the Google Play. The picture below gives us a pretty good idea of what's coming!

The new Samsung Galaxy (?) teased and Vodafone confirm they will have it!

   So Samsung's counter on the next Galaxy superphone teaser and the release was that lovely video you see above. Yeah, it had the poke at Apple which is pretty much a forgone conclusion when you consider Samsung's recent bunch of ads. Other than that just give it a watch it's good stuff.

   As well as that Vodafone UK were straight out the blocks announcing that they would be carrying the upcoming phone and this screen grab is shown below. For those of you on Vodafone who can't wait to get your hands on the unannounced phone irrespective of its innards can register your interest on Voda's website via this link!

In other news:

• Three (3) UK ends business contract sales. The company reported that only 0.5% of its sales are to business and has stopped doing business deals altogether to focus solely on mainstream customers and their satisfaction.
• Verizon drops the price of the Galaxy Nexus to $199 with a two-year agreement.
• LG Optimus 3D Mxx launches in Europe.
• ST-Ericsson have reportedly teamed up with HTC to create budget chipsets for HTC's low-end smartphones.
• Sony Xperia P and U landing in the UK on the 28th of March.
• Skype for Windows Phone leaves Beta but it's still slightly disappointing and feels somewhat half-hearted and rushed. Get it now from the Windows Phone marketplace.

Uh-oh did the new Samsung Galaxy leak today along with S-cloud?!?!

   With all of the rumours and hype being generated around Samsung's successor to the Galaxy S2 we may well have seen our first glimpse of the new device today! The reported device on the video has a quad-core 1.4Ghz processor as well as a 720p HD display, which appears to be different to that of the Galaxy Nexus, which also crops up in the video.

   The second rumoured leak today is that Samsung plans to launch S-cloud with the Galaxy S3 which is to all intents and purposes a copy of iCloud. The rumours suggest that you will be given 'unlimited' storage options instead of having iCloud's limits. Which sounds like a very, very appealing feature. 

   We'll have to wait and see if this is the device Samsung brings to London on the 3rd of May, but it looks very likely that the cat is out of the bag!

   

Nokia shoots a whole advertisement using the Pureview 808!

   The Nokia Pureview is the best camera phone in the world by a little bit more than a country mile. It packs in a 41MP camera and still manages to look like and work like a phone! Nokia have really gone to great lengths to show off this phone in the advert above. Yes they hired models, yes they used professional lighting but they also shot everything on the phone and it does look amazing I must admit. 

   It really does show, if you put the tech in the right hands amazing things can be achieved. Given the amount of movies we saw shot with the Nokia N8, it does look like we're in for a few treats when this phone meets the producers.

• The Kindle touch and the Kindle touch 3G have launched in the UK and Germany a week earlier than was planned.
• Microsoft planning Skype for Xbox! This would work well with Kinect.
• ICS hitting unlocked Galaxy S2's in the US of A!

Spotify released an ICS-ified version of its mobile app.

   One of the biggest music streaming services in the world has provided us with what they described last week as a 'big announcement'. Now this is only available if you have Spotify Premium at the moment, but this is a beautiful looking app and really is an advancement and improvement over the old app in so many ways. It fits in really well with Google's themes and Spotify have to be commented on this one.

   Sorry iOS users Spotify is working on getting you some of this eye candy too, just hold tight and hopefully it'll arrive soon.

Barclay's unleashes PayTag!

   Those of you who live in the US of A have Google wallet and if you don't then your carrier is p[robably involved in the Isis project. But, for us on the other side of the pond, not only do we lack LTE but we also don't have a viable NFC payments solution yet. Well Barclay's has something to say about that today!

   This isn't exactly an elegant solution by any means; it is simply a sticker which you apply to the back of your device, no fancy app, no intricate installment just whack it on the back of your phone and off you go! The sticker will let you pay for goods up to £15 in value, which will rise to £20 in June, so it will genuinely be useful for that cheeky chocolate bar at lunchtime... We know you buy it!

   The only issues here are what you do if your phone gets stolen... Barclays says one call and payments are disabled (quite hard to do without a phone I do acknowledge) and second if you trade your phone in we;re not sure whether they charge you for a replacement or what really. You can't really pull this off and reapply it. Barclay's must have considered this before todays annoucnement so I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

• Orange UK has promised an update for Galaxy S2 users to ICS tomorrow, so connect your phone via Kies, you might be lucky today.
• Nokia annpunced a $1.7billion loss for Q1!!!!! Ouch!!! But they did have about $9billion of sales, so well it's not too bad. AND Colin Giles who was the Vice-President of sales resigned today too, citing family reasons for his departure, take what you will from that!
• Microsoft announced there will be a fourth variant of Windows 8; enterprise edition!
• Verizon sold more iPhone in Q1 of this year than sales of all it's LTE phone range put together!

Ubuntu for phones.

Ubuntu mobile OS: Do we need it, is it real and will it work?


This is another one of my posts from coolsmartphone.com

Ubuntu is one of the most well known Linux variants for desktop and laptop computers, but its creator, Canonical, has plans to extend its’ reach a tad further with different versions of the OS. That is if a job listing on their website is to be believed. Have a quick read and see how you interpret it;



Up to this point we have seen Ubuntu for Android, which seems to be a slightly different entity, it installs alongside Android and offers a desktop experience when a phone is connected up to a big screen. But, the rumours suggests that a phone will be produced, with the help of one of the big manufacturers, and feature Ubuntu’s currently unannounced smartphone OS. Now we have to take all of this with a pinch of salt because it might not end up happening at all or it could just be a badly worded reference to Ubuntu for Android, as opposed to a stand alone operating system, we just don’t know.

But, I have personally been questioning whether or not Canonical would achieve anything if they did commit to this rumoured project. Can they really compete with iOS, Android and even Windows Phone 7? After all we have seen the downfall of HP/Palm and their beautiful WebOS, as well as the likes of Moblin/Maemo/Meego/Tizen and RIM, all of whom appear to be on a slippery slope.

Maybe Canonical aren’t after world domination, instead they may want to take away the tinkerers and the coders who have become frustrated by Android OEM’s trying to lock down their devices, but of course this is pure speculation, as always keep it locked to Coolsmartphone for all the latest news on this story! Google to try Apple's ploy?

   The rumour mill has been working at full capacity in the last few weeks. Recently the rumours have focused on Android OEM's and today is the turn of Motorola, who have recently been bought out by Google. 

   The rumours runs that Google is going to change Motorola and only offer flagships from the company, in the same vein that Apple does currently. This would be a huge departure from Motorola's current strategy, which caters to every section of their market and their cousins. It would be very interesting to see what other manufacturers would do if this does pan out.

The iPhone 5 set to use liquidmetal?

   Liquid metal... what on earth is that I hear you ask? Well let me tell you guys; it is a compound metal made from zirconium, titanium, nickel and copper. Apple owns the technological IP rights to making the metal and with the need for Apple to refresh the iPhone 4 and 4s' glass finish, it seems that this would make perfect sense.

   It would also give the iPhone another new distinct look that none of the competitors can 'copy'. This material is also said to be considerably more durable and resistant to scratches than Apple's current glass finish because it's as strong as titanium. All interesting stuff, but before we find out whether or not the iPhone 5 has this clad around it or not we have the minor business of a Samsung release on May the 3rd!

In other news;

• The HTC One X has received a minor update today; the update is said to rectify issues with battery life and overheating which were occurring before, as well as the normal array of bug fixes and optimisations, we have come to expect with an update.
• RIM announce the cheap Blackberry curve 9220 in India, Nokia you have another threat to your 'next billion' plan.
• The rumours keep coming... and Microsoft's upcoming mobile OS codenamed Apollo is expected to allow OEM customisation. Microsoft hopes this will give it a leg up to the popularity Android finds with manufacturers because of the customisability of the OS.
